R Solves Shakespeare Authorship Question
Those of you who track applications of R may be interested in the following: "The purpose of this paper is then to apply modern text analysis techniques using the R statistical packege [sic] to compare the works attributed to Shakespeare to those of leading alternate candidates such as Sir Frances Bacon, Christopher Marlow, and Edward de Vere...".

R and Excel
Even using the VBA back of Excel to create interfaces with R would make a lot of sense. Suppose I could have access to VBA macros that import and export data into R , it would be great. The R GUI series like Rattle come even closer to Excel...so a VBA _R_ExCel package might be useful to ordinary folks . Besides Excel costs money, so adding R functions to Open Office would help both of them ( if

Rsync - does it really do an *exact* copy?
Hi Rsync-ers I'm simply using rsync to do an exact copy of my root (and home) partition by using the -aHv options. When the copy is complete, I modify fstab so my root and home mount points are pointing to the newly copied partitions. When I boot (into the new partitions), init and all the services start okay; however, when I get to "mgetty" and it passes control to

Bivariate weighted fit methods of Williamson-York in R?
Hello everyone, I've been looking for an R function to calculate bivariate weighted fits of my data set, preferably using methods of Williamson-York. Improvements offered by using bivariate weighted fitting compared to conventional linear least-square fitting was recently described in a paper by Cantrell (http://www.atmos-chem-phys.org/8/5477/2008/acp-8-5477-2008.pdf), in which the methods

Today on VUC, Dan York on Google Voice + SIP
Hi, Today at 12 Non EDT, Dan York will be with us to talk about the recent on and off moments of Google Voice SIP URI calling. Like Skype + Asterisk (or any SIP), Google Voice and SIP compose the other shoe waiting to drop. We're following this with interest. So GV turned on SIP URI and then a few days later, turned it off. Why? Did the geeks (like us) jump on this too quickly or too heavily?

Internship Opportunity at New York financial weekly
It's not too early for statistically-adept students to think about underpaid, but life-altering, internships for the summer of 2012. In fact, after November 1st it may be too late to apply here at Barron's. This will be the second summer we've offered paid internships, which means that applicants can now poll the hapless folks who interned this past summer. Contact me, Bill Alpert, and
