Off-topic: Biostatistics book spam?
Just got what seems to be the first spam for a stats book I ever saw. It only has one review at amazon, and for all I know the author wrote it himself. This might be a decent text, but if so, I'd like to hear it from someone here. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Biostatistics Books <biostatbooks at hotmail.com> Date: Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 11:19 AM Subject: Is this the

Think I'm sure, but confirm: lme4 vs. nlme
The impression I get from the list and the references I've perused is that nlme is being phased out in favor of lme4, but lme4 still doesn't have a complete feature set yet. What I'm still fuzzy on, being a relative R newbie, is: (a) what features in nlme are currently missing in lme4 (b) what's the projected time frame on getting them implemented. If anyone can answer my naive

For MacBook, best way to do R?
I'm getting a MacBook and I'd like to stick with OS X rather than convert it to Linux just yet. However, my main concern is having decent performance. What's my best option: *use the existing binary for R? *compile R fresh under OS X? * install Linux and run R under that? Does anyone have any recent experience they can share? Thanks! -- I can answer any question. "I

any advice on web interfaces to R?
I saw http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#R-Web-Interfaces and I'm still not sure yet which platform (Linux, Windows, etc.) I'll be working on -- and no, it's not under my control to pick. I was wondering if anyone out there had good advice, that would save me time and stomach acid, on how to set up a web browser to send a list of commands to an R and put the resulting table

predict.gls choking on levels of factor
I've got a gls formula that's a mix of continuous and ordered variables. I wanted to use gls because I wanted to use the varIdent structure. Anyway, attempts to use "predict.gls" choke with the error that the levels I use are not allowed for one of them -- the first one alphabetically, so I'd guess the second would have the same problem. So I have three linked questions --

Sample size calculation for differences between two very small proportions (Fisher's exact test or others)?
Hi, I'm try to compute the minimum sample size needed to have at least an 80% of power, with alpha=0.05. The problem is that empirical proportions are really small: 0.00154 in one case and 0.00234. These are the estimated failure proportion of two medical treatments. Thomas and Conlon (1992) suggested Fisher's exact test and proposed a computational method, which according to their table

UK VoIP-PSTN gateway recommendations
I'm looking for recommendations for UK-based VoIP-PSTN gateways. They should ideally offer: - IAX connection - Multiple simultaneous calls on a single account - Lower call rates than BT Business - Auto-top up or invoicing in arrears I can find several that offer one of these facilities, but none that offer all. Thanks! -- David Gurr Congruity Ltd. Hemel Hempstead, UK

Estimating credit card default probabilities.
Folks, I am working on a credit card defaults and transition probabilities. For example a single credit card account could be in a number of states: up-to-date, 30, 60, 90 days in arrears or in default. * Are there packages in R that do estimation of the transition probabilities given historical cohort defaults? * Any pointers to papers specific to this type of estimation? * Simulation of future

Power analysis for MANOVA?
Hello, I have searched and failed for a program or script or method to conduct a power analysis for a MANOVA. My interest is a fairly simple case of 5 dependent variables and a single two-level categorical predictor (though the categories aren't balanced). If anybody happens to know of a script that will do this in R, I'd love to know of it! Otherwise, I'll see about writing one

libtheora test suite
Hi, I just committed the framework for a test suite, and a couple of small tests, to libtheora (changeset:9700). The tests live in a directory called tests. When building with GNU autotools: * 'make check' will run the test programs listed in the TESTS variable in tests/Makefile.am . 'make check' will fail if any tests fail. * 'make distcheck' will fail if any

Different behavior of median and mean function - Why?
Hi together, below is a small example which produces outcome I do not understand, namely that the median function works fine on a data.frame without negative numbers, but doesn't work on a data.frame with one negative number. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for that or better, that I'm doing something wrong and someone could guide me how to solve it. I tried googling it,
