os x crash using rpanel and tcltk (PR#10495)
Hello,
I've recently discovered a persistent issue with rpanel when running
R.app (2.6.1) on Mac OS X 10.4.11. tcltk and rpanel load without any
apparent error, and the interactive panels appear to work as expected,
however upon closing the panels rpanel has created I get catastrophic
errors and R crashes completely. For the most part R manages to crash
with dignity and work can be saved, but

queueue recording and what to do next
Guys, if you define recording on queues.conf and also define a
monitor_filename var on your dialplna, you can record a queue call but,
isthere a way to do something with the file after the call ends? I need to
move the file to some other place but I cant find where to define a command
to run after a queue call finishes.
Any hints?

label storage and conversions: DBMS and R
Hi R users,
I am new to using DBMS with R for large datasets. Thanks to all who responded
with useful suggestion to my earlier postings about using large datasets and
DBMS with R. I am writing to get some help about how to design good tables in
DBMS to take full advantage of the wonderful built-in facilities in R, like
labels.
I am using RMySQL client. Because R makes good use of variable

Is a .R script file name available inside the script?
Hi,
if we have a file called Rscript.R that contains the following, for example:
x <- 1:100
outfile = "Rscript.Rout"
sink(outfile)
print(x)
and then we run
>> source("Rscript.R")
we get an output file called Rscript.Rout - great!
Is there an internal variable, something like .Platform, that holds
the script name when it is being executed? I would like to use

Lack of foreign-key constraints support in ActiveRecord
Is there any reason why AR has never supported foreign-key constraints?
I can understand the lack of support for triggers and stored procedures
since they are highly dependent on the database to create a wrap API
around them. But this is not the case for foreign keys.
This is specially important for open-source projects like
Redmine/Chiliproject and Gitorious where you shouldn''t be

generic database access methods
I've been putting together a package that defined generic methods for
database access. The packages is called "Rdbi." It borrows as much as
possible from existing database packages / proposals. I'd like to start
a discussion about the proposed interface. Here's what I've come up
with so far:
#
# Rdbi: connectionMethods.R
#
dbConnect <- function(dbObj, ...)

IPC
Hi, I need to somehow make R communicate with another remote JAVA
process which provides compute services. I have control over the
communications protocol, but I would like to keep it to a standardised
protocol, such as SOAP, CORBA, etc.
What I would like to know is, what do other people use to do this? The
nature of the communications will be low bandwidth procedure calls, with
little data.

RoR, pg_connections, and pg_users
In a RoR application, is it possible to have individual userids
associated with particular sessions employed to establish their related
connections to the postgresql DBMS backend and, if so, is this design
desireable? What are the implications for performance and future
deployment limitations?
The idea behind this question is that in our application certain tables
require that the last

I wonder whether anyone has succeeded in building either the RPgSQL or the
Rdbi.PGSQL and Rdbi packages for Windows. If so, would you be willing to
share either the binary package(s) or

Linux DBMS to share with Win
I'm using Samba to allow my users to store their database on a Redhat 6.1
file server.
I've got some who want to shift to using Linux instead of Windows but the
DBMS they use is not supported (yet... I'm told) on Linux and I'm afraid
that multi-user access on different OS's are going to screw things all to
high heck anyways...
But that being said...
Are there existing

epoll increasing latency big time
Sorry this is going to be a bit vague, but I''ve noticed something rather odd
going on with EventMachine on Linux.
I''ve written something uses EventMachine to proxy HTTP to other processes.
On OS X, it works great, adding only about 20% extra latency into the
connection when proxying versus connecting to the original backend process
directly, so a 5ms connection might now take

How do booleans work?
I''m a little confused as to how booleans work in Rails. Which is
better in the database? boolean or int(1)? True == 1 and False == 0,
right? Using SQLite, I tried to set a value to true inside the
database but it gave me an error. MySql didn''t, so I had to switch to
int(1) for it to work. Is this just how it is?

Post processing need for installing packages in rpms.
Hello,
I maintain some packages in Fedora Extras for R related modules.
Until R 2.2.0 I used for post processing (both after installing and
removing the package) the following lines:
%{_bindir}/R CMD perl %{_libdir}/R/share/perl/build-help.pl --htmllists
cat %{_libdir}/R/library/*/CONTENTS > %{_libdir}/R/doc/html/search/index.txt
Typically %{_bindir} is /usr/bin and

ActiveRecord for kirbybase?

nothing which looks like it''s actually working. Anyone know of such an adapter that is functional and available?

"<<-" assignment no long work in class methods
Hi-
I used to use "<<-" to do assignment inside a class method, and
just found that now it is broken in R 2.0. For example, the
following code
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
setClass( "myclass", representation(x="numeric") )
setGeneric("incrXByOne", function(obj) standardGeneric("incrXByOne"))

belongs_to and lookup tables
I have two classes, Listing and Warranty. A Listing (think of it as a
product) may or may not have a Warranty from a lookup table.
When I want the Warranty.company for a given Listing I want to say the
following:
@listing = Listing.find(4)
@company = @listing.warranty.company
In order to do that I did the following:
class Listing < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :warranty
end

Rails SQL generation (Firebird adapter) - can someone explain ...
I see some possible issues with the SQL that is being generated by the
firebird adapter.
Every SQL is being generated on the fly by concatenating strings.
Can someone please explain why the SQL is being generated the way it is?
I cannot use this in real life for a couple of reasons:
1. This introduces a security hole because a user, accidentally or
deliberately, could potentially submit a

tabular data (was RE: [R] Removing "row.names")
Hi,
I agree that replacing data.frames for modeling functions would
be too painful. Also I agree with Thomas that new class(es) for
tabular data should not inherit from data.frame, and that data.frames
should conceptually inherit from some other base tabular data class.
At this point I'm not suggesting anything in concrete --- I haven't
sorted it out in my own mind --- but I want

recommended combo of apps for new user?
Hi there,
I would like some advice, not so much about how to use R, but about software
that I need to complement R. I've rooted around in the FAQ's and done a few
searches on this mailing list but haven't quite found the perspective I
need.
I am an experienced data analyst in my field (forest ecology and ecological
monitoring) but new to R. I am a long time user of SPSS and have
