Extracting the name of an object into a character string and vice versa
I am still struggling to map a character string to an object name and vice versa in R. I thought the as.name() function might work, but observe the following behaviour ... > attach(warpbreaks) > levels(tension) [1] "L" "M" "H" > levels(as.name("tension")) NULL > objectname<-as.name("tension") > objectname tension >

Packages built before R 2.10.0
Dear list, I am running R2.11.1 on 32 bit windows. I am receiving messages as follows ... > require(car) Loading required package: car Error: package 'car' was built before R 2.10.0: please re-install it The package kohonen was another example. This failure appears to be fatal and not only affects the package concerned, but also all its dependents. Is there anything I can do at my

Using Rscript
Dear List, Hopefully someone will point me to a piece of documentation that I have overlooked. I am running Rscript successfully to read and execute an R program, but have failed to find the correct syntax to route the output to a file using the Rscript command that invokes the job. I tried Rscript -e 'sink("outputfile")' script.R , but it then ignored the scriptfile. I know

Dear List, No doubt I am going around this the wrong way, and hopefully one of you will be able to tell me how to go about it the right way. I want to change the names of an object inside a function and have it stay changed in the global environment. I can only effect the change inside the function as follows ... >

Coercing a list of variables in a function call
This is hopefully a trivial problem for list subscribers, but I am very new to writing R functions. I wish to call an R function written by myself from another program to fit a model. I need to tell it which of the independent variables are factors. I need to do this in a generic way, so that when the list is passed, R will work through the variables in the data frame and coerce them into being

Ensembles in cforest
Dear List, I'm trying to find a way to extract the individual conditional inference trees from cforest ( a modelling function in the party package) in a manner analogous to getTree in randomForest and I'm struggling. I can see that the information is held within the ensemble list, but haven't been able to work out how this sequence of nested lists is structured or if any of the items

Queries about step() and stepAIC()
I have been learning how to use these functions and would like to know the following as I have so far been unable to find the answers in the documentation. 1) What stopping rules are used ? 2) Can the stopping rules be changed? 3) Can the results of each step be stored as objects in R and if so how ? 4) Is there a worked example somewhere of using the keep= argument ? Many thanks in

merging or joining 2 dataframes: merge, rbind.fill, etc.?
#I want to "merge" or "join" 2 dataframes (df1 & df2) into a 3rd (mydf). I want the 3rd dataframe to contain 1 row for each row in df1 & df2, and all the columns in both df1 & df2. The solution should "work" even if the 2 dataframes are identical, and even if the 2 dataframes do not have the same column names. The rbind.fill function seems to work. For

merging several dataframes from a list
Hi there, I have a list of dataframes (generated by reading multiple files) and all dataframes are comparable in dimension and column names. They also have a common column, which, I'd like to use for merging. To give a simple example of what I have: df1 <- data.frame(c(LETTERS[1:5]), c(2,6,3,1,9)) names(df1) <- c("pos", "data") df3 <- df2 <- df1 df2$data

merging single column from different dataframe
Hi all, probably really simple to solve, but having no background in programming I haven't been able to figure this out: I have two dataframes like df1 <- data.frame(names1=c('aa','ab', 'ac', 'ad'), var1=c(1,5,7,12)) df2 <- data.frame(names2=c('aa', 'ab', 'ac', 'ad', 'ae'), var2=c(3,6,9,12,15)) Now I want merge

Compare two dataframes
Hello, I have two dataframes DF1 and DF2 that should be identical but are not (DF1 has some rows that aren't in DF2, and vice versa). I would like to produce a new dataframe DF3 containing rows in DF1 that aren't in DF2 (and similarly DF4 would contain rows in DF2 that aren't in DF1). I have a solution for this problem (see self contained example below) but it's awkward and

Help with loop
Hi, I have two dataframes: The first, df1, contains some missing data: cola colb colc cold cole 1 NA 5 9 NA 17 2 NA 6 NA 14 NA 3 3 NA 11 15 19 4 4 8 12 NA 20 The second, df2, contains the following: cola colb colc cold cole 1 1.4 0.8 0.02 1.6 0.6 I'm wanting all missing data in df1$cola to be replaced by the value of df2$cola.

Looping through a list of objects & do something...
Hey Folks, Could somebody show me how to loop through a list of dataframes? I want to be able to generically access their elements and do something with them. For instance, instead of this: df1<- data.frame(x=(1:5),y=(1:5)); df2<- data.frame(x=(1:5),y=(1:5)); df3<- data.frame(x=(1:5),y=(1:5)); plot(df1$x,df1$y); plot(df2$x,df2$y); plot(df3$x,df3$y); I would like to do something like:

Merging list of dataframes with reshape merge_all
Hi, I'd like to merge mutliple dataframes from a list of dataframes by some common columns. The approach for simply merging 2 dataframes is working with: merge(df1,df2,by=c("col1","col2","col3"),all=TRUE) For mutliple dataframes in a list I try to use the merge_all command from the package reshape. The documentation states that the command takes a list of

Maintaining Column names while writing csv file.
Dear R helpers, I have one trivial problem while writing an output file in csv format. I have two dataframes say df1 and df2 which I am reading from two different csv files. df1 has column names as date, r1, r2, r3 while the dataframe df2 has column names as date, 1w, 2w. (the dates in both the date frames are identical also no of elements in each column are equal say = 10). I merge these

a newbie seeking for a simple problem
Dear Experienced R users, I have a looks-like simple but complicated problem urgently needed to be solved. Below is the detail: I have two dataframes, df1, df2. df1 contains two column and many thousands rows: column 1 is a "gene_name", column 2 is "value". df2 contains only one column which is "gene_name" with couple hundred rows. I want to change "value"

split & rbind (cast) dataframe
Hi, I would like to split dataframe based on one colum and want to connect the two dataframes by rows (like rbind). Here a small example: # The orgininal dataframe df1 <- data.frame(col1 = c("A","A","B","B"),col2 = c(1:4), col3 = c(1:4)) # The datafame how it could look like df2 <- data.frame(A.col2 = c(1,2), A.col3 = c(1,2), B.col2 = c(3,4), B.col3

problems with merge() - the output has many repeated lines
Hi everyone, I have been merging many big dataframes (about 80000 rows each) and I never had this problem, but now it happened to me and I want to know if someone knows what could be happening. The final dataframe has many rows, an impossible number! I have done edit(dataframe) and I saw that there are many repeated rows (all equal). Thanks for any help, Cec?lia Carmo Universidade de

Conditional operation on multiple columns from two data frames
Hi- I have two data frames for which I wish to conditionally subtract the values of one dataframe from the other. I want to subtract df1$x from df2$x when their id is equal and the absolute value of difference between the dates is 12 hours or less. If there is no match of equal id's and dates less than 12 hours apart I want it to return "NA". Note that df1 has missing values in x

Question on Merge/Lookup
I need to merge three datasets and don't know how. If I were using SQL, I would use df3, look up the characteristics of each date in df1 and the value for each observation in df2. df1 - unique list of Dates and characteristics of those dates Date, YYYYMM, YYYYWW, DOW df2 - the raw data Date, Place, Value df3 - all posibile combinations of Date + Place (via
