IWLS vs direct ML estimation
Hi, I am thinking about IWLS vs ML estimation. When I use glm() for a 2-parameter distribution (e.g., Weibull), I can otain the MLE of scale parameter given shape parameter through IWLS. Because this scale parameter usually converges to the MLE. In this point, I am wondering: i) can you say that the direct MLE, which is obtained by maximizing a likelihood function, is equalvant to the indirect

how to skip a numeric column for averaging other columns?
Data has the first row for variable name and the first column for sample name. I want to take "Log" for all data, but how to compute without the first column for sample name. How to generate a xyplot with multiple panels using an empty data frame ?
Hi: I am coding some interactive interface using an xyplot from lattice. When a user clicks on a panel of the xyplot, a simulation is executed and the resulting data is plotted on the corresponding panel. The problem is that I start with an empty data frame and only fill it as the user request data from simulations. And, I have found it impossible to create a conditional plot that contains panels

Help: formatting the result of 'cut' function
Dear list, I would like to format the result of the 'cut' function to perform a subsequent frequency distribution table (fdt) suitable for publications. Below an reproducible example: set.seed(1) x <- c(rnorm(1e3, mean=10, sd=1), 50, 100) start <- 0 end <- 110 h <-10 c1 <- cut(x, br=seq(start, end, h), right=TRUE) levels(c1) # I get: # [1] "(0,10]"

[SUMMARY] Rails Core Weekly June 5 - June 11
Dear list, This weeks RCW has a slightly different format than before. After all, since what we want is less bloat, this RCW is less verbose. Please do let me know what you think off-list. *Interesting stuff on the Rails Timeline* _Fixed and commited to trunk:_ An issue with not null columns in SQLite3 migrations(<a

Re moving rows which do not satisfy a condition
Hello, Considering 5 points in X-Y plain. Data is a 5*2 matrix (5 rows for samples & 2 columns for X and Y) With a distance from the origin, if a distance < 7, remove the row from the Data. After calculating the distance for each point, I can't forward because of this "Removing" problem. Anyone can help me? Data=matrix(1:10,5,2) a=rep(0,5); b=rep(0,5); for (i in

Genmod in SAS vs. glm in R

Error in "[<-"(`*tmp*`, i, value = numeric(0)) : nothing to replace with The problem description is The likelihood includes two parameters to be estimated: lambda (=beta0+beta1*x) and alpha. The algorithm for the estimation is as following: 1) with alpha=0, estimate lambda (estimate beta0

configure error on alpha (PR#806)
Hi, I've found that the default options of gcc and g77 on alpha produce an executable that suffers from floating exceptions. There seems to be a problem with the configure scripts that prevents the --with-f77 option working correctly. The configure script tests that f77 is running by attempting to compile and link a dummy program - the link step seems broken on the alpha (it doesn't like

Negative integer subscripts in [[?
Should negative subscripts be outlawed in x[[subscript]] ? Currently, if subscript is a scalar then it can only be negative if length(x)==1 (otherwise [[ throws an error). If length(subscript)>1 then it gets treated as an attempt to recursively extract an element of a nested list. > list(10,20)[[-1]] # get the last element out of 2 [1] 20 > list(10,20,30)[[-(1:2)]] # get the last

Old, slow firewall users please speak up!
Ok, I''ve flogged this issue probably longer than some of you can stand by now. (remember, I''m the nut trying to use a PPro200 to support ~500 users on a 10Mb internet link :o) To appease those who think I''m nuts, I am ordering a new firewall shortly to allow for future growth. (probably a Dell PE750 with P4/2.8 and dual GE nics.) However, since I have yet to prove

There must be a better way to do this
I made this rather cool plot which I am quite pleased with: http://brainimaging.waisman.wisc.edu/~perlman/data/BeeswarmLinesDemo.pdf However, I feel there must be a better way to do it than what I did. I'm attaching the code to create it, which downloads the data by http so it should run for you if you have the current version of beeswarm installed (which was just updated today,

Trying to understand cut
Jeff, Perhaps I was sloppy with my notation: I want groups >=0 <10 >=10 <20 >=20<30 ...... >=90 <100 In any event, my question remains, why did the four different versions of cut give me the same results? I hope someone can explain to me the function of include.lowest and right in the call to cut. As demonstrated in my example below, the parameters do not seem to alter

SAMBA 2.0.6 vs HP's ASU/9000 LanMan (battle rages on)
Found the solution to my 2.0.6 dying on me on SGI - SYSV_IPC needed to be #undef'ed in source/include/includes.h in favor of MMAP, seems to have fixed it. If I run the daemon in server mode, no prob. If I switch to domain mode (and use smbpasswd to join into the domain, per the instructions), I get the error indicating that the username/password pair was incorrect, as if I typed in a wrong

Remove non-numerical columns from data frame
Hello, My question sounds simple, but as I am desperatly searchin for a solution I am asking you all. :) I try to filter out all non-numeric columns of a data frame using a for loop to go through all columns. My if clause looks like this:         for(j in 1:length(data)) {                 ...                 if(!is.numeric(data[j])) skip <- "not numeric")                 ...
