stripping #s in a text file prior to reading into table or dataframe
I'm importing a lot of text tables of data (from Latent Gold) that includes
hashes in some of the column names ("Cluster#1", "Cluster#2", etc.). Is
there an easy way to strip the offending hashes out before pushing the text
into a table or data frame? I thought I'd use gsub, e.g., but can't figure
out how to read in a text file without reading it into a table or

two newbie questions
# I've tried to make this easy to paste into R, though it's probably
so simple you won't need to.
# I have some data (there are many more variables, but this is a
reasonable approximation of it)
# here's a fabricated data frame that is similar in form to mine:

sem & testing multiple hypotheses with BIC
I'm coming from the AMOS world and am wondering if there is a simple
way to do multiple hypothesis testing in the manner of BIC analyses in
AMOS using the sem package in R. I've read the documentation, but
don't see anything in there except for basic BIC scores. Perhaps
someone has devised a simple way to compare the relative likelihood of
all possible path-fittings within a

newbie query: simple crosstabs
I've been playing around with various table tools, trying to construct a
fairly simple cross-tab. It shouldn't be hard, but for some reason it
turning out to be (for me).
If I want to see how many men and how many women agree with a agree/disagree
question (coded 1,0), I can do this:
>attach(mydata)
>mytable <- table(male, q1.bin) # gender and a binary response variable

using cor & var, but am wondering if there are libraries that already
provide this function.

log-normal Centile
I am having problems trying to get R to graph data input that is log-normal
on the horizontal (x) axis.
The data is log (base 10), and I am more interested in viewing the tails of
the distribution. The closest I can get with this is log on the vertical
(y) axis and linear on the horizontal axis. Note that the x-axis is Centile
(0%-100%) and is at this time linear, however I want it to be

mapping states with colors
Hi folks,
I'm just learning how to use maps. As an initial foray, I'm mapping the
states that have "duty to retreat" (blue) and "stand your ground" (red)
self-defense standards. Here is my extremely naive script:
dtr <- c('alabama', 'arizona', 'conneticut', 'delaware', 'dist of columbia'
, 'hawaii',

Dividing a vector into ntiles
R 2.1.1
Win 2k
Would someone suggest a method (or methods) that can be used to
determine ntile cutpoints of a vector, i.e. to determine values that can
be used to divide a vector into thirds such as 0-33 centile, 34-66
centile, 67-100 centile. If for example I had a vector:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
and wanted to divide the vector into thirds
I would have cut-points of 3, and 6.
Thanks,
John

manipulating multiply imputed data sets
Hi folks,
I have five imputed data sets and would like to apply the same
recoding routines to each. I could do this sort of thing pretty
easily in Stata using MIM, but I've decided to go cold turkey on other
stats packages as a incentive for learning more about R. Most of the
recoding is for nominal variables, like race, religion, urbanicity,
and the like. So, for example, to recode race

log-normal centile on horizontal axis

Which is the best user GUI ?
Hi,
I would like to customise an end user application like Centiles's callpad
software (http://www.centile.com/solutions-applications-callpad.php ).
Its purpose is to allow users to set or read various personal phone-related
parameters (call history, voicemail settings, conference, ...) instead of
using phone keys combinations.
Are you aware of any software that could be used for this ?

centile reference chart / clildren growth chart - what package/method to use
We are constructing growth charts (age/weight and age/length) for children

But we we don't know how to use R for producing growth charts.
We are collection data of Age, Weight and Length.
The data are used to produce diagnosis-specific Growth charts (like the CDC

Problem runing Samba 3.0.23d with LDAP on FreeBSD 6.2 sparc64
Hi
I want to run a Samba PDC with LDAP backend on a FreeBSD 6.2 for Sparc64.
And off course, if I send this mail, it is not working ! :-(
I have this error message when using smbclient on the PDC itself.
The command line is: smbclient -L janus -Uadministrator%toto
The result is: session setup failed: Call returned zero bytes (EOF)

box-and-whisker plots based on summary not data
Hi,
Is it possible to produce box-and-whisker plots given that I have the
median, interquartile and 5/95th centile values, but not the data from
which they come? It seems that it ought to be possible to coerce bxp
to do what I want, but I can't quite see how.
Thanks,
Matthew

simple graph question: manipulating variable names

few dozen variable names in graphs. I've tried various approaches like
this:

dvs <- c("onedv", "anotherdv", "yetanotherdv")
for (iv in ivs) {
for (dv in dvs) {

Deciles and R
Hi everyone,
I'm a new R user (if this is a really basic question, please do excuse
me...) and I'm having some questions regarding a deciles problem.
I have a variable which I need to categorize according to its deciles (X).
However, this categorization should be made into another variable (call it
NewVar).
Ex. for the quartiles case (just for the sake of exposition, since I need

Losing factor levels when moving variables from one context to another
Hi, there
I'm currently trying to figure out how to keep my "factor" levels for a
variable when moving it from one data frame or matrix to another.
Example below:
vec1<-(rep("10",5))
vec2<-(rep("30",5))
vec3<-(rep("80",5))
vecs<-c(vec1, vec2, vec3)
resp<-rnorm(2,15)
dat<-as.data.frame(cbind(resp, vecs))

Joining variables
Hello,
If I have two variables that are factors or characters and I want to
create a new variable that is the combination of both what function can
I use to accomplish this?
Ex.
Var1 Var2

And I want
NewVar
SA10005511319851113
Thanks in advance.
