You requested this report (PR#1880)
Hi guys,
I am planning to let my students do some simulations regarding the
bias of the sample standard deviation. The following function is
pretty standard (so I hope :) ):

+ res <- NULL
+ for(n in nrng){
+ data <- matrix(random(n*replic,...), ncol=replic)
+ val <- sqrt(apply(data, 2, var))

Noobie ANOVA intercept question
Dear R list,
I've been attempting to interpret the results from a three-way ANOVA. I
think I understand contrasts and the R defaults for these (treatment
contrasts). My question is: what is the intercept in this test? As far as I
can tell, its NOT the expected value of a point that belongs to the first
level of all three explanatory factors (because there is only one point that
satisfies these

Write performance in a replicated/distributed setup with KVM?
This has probably been discussed before, but since I'm new on the list I hope
You have patience with me.
I have a four brick distributed/replicated setup. The computers are multi-core
16GB memory and 2*2.0TB in raid1 SATA-disks locally. The nodes are connected by
1 GB ethernet. All nodes have glusterfs 3.3beta2 installed and they are running
debian 6 64bit. The underlying filesystems are

Samba 3.0.1pre3/ldap - Strange gid mappings server side
Good day,
I'm running some tests with Samba 3.0.1pre3 with an LDAP sam. LDAP has been,
to the best of my abilities, properly populated with the needed group
mappings. The "net groupmap list" command indeed shows the following:

adding planes/lines to 3d surface plots? (persp, wireframe)
Dear helplist members,
I have been using 'wireframe()' to make 3d plots using the following call:
wireframe (temp ~ xc2 * mc2, screen = list(z = 230, x = -70, y = 0),
scales = list (arrows = FALSE))
and these three vectors:
xc2 mc2 temp

Calculate confidence interval of the mean based on ANOVA
I am trying to recreate an analysis that has been done by another group
(in SAS I believe). I'm stuck on one part, I think because my stats
knowledge is lacking, and while it's OT, I'm hoping someone here can help.
Given this dataframe;
foo*<-*structure(list(OBS = structure(1:18, .Label = c("1", "2", "3",
"4", "5",

Software inventory
Howdy,
Before I go about writing one myself, anyone out there written a
software inventory module/fact for gathering a list of all installed
rpms/debs on a system? Got a few ideas floating around in my head, but
wanted to see if/what other folks have done ..

Standard error of mean for aov
Hi all,
I'm quite new to R and have a very basic question regarding how one gets
the standard error of the mean for factor levels under aov. I was able to
get the factor level means using:
summary(print(model.tables(rawfixtimedata.aov,"means"),digits=3)),
where rawfixtimedata.aov is my aov model. It doesn't appear that there is
an equivalent function to get the standard

Problem with demoting, new dc and replic
Hi!
i have 3 dcs with samba
i demote bdc and replace it with dc2 with de same ip
the replicate with dc1 is ok, and the replicate of dc3 with dc1 is ok,
the problem is in dc2 with dc3
i found the problem, but i dont known how fixes
when i do samba-tools drs showrepl in dc3
i see in connection appears the old dc named bdc and dont appears the new,

anova planned comparisons/contrasts
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how anova works in R by translating the
examples in Sokal And Rohlf's (1995 3rd edition) Biometry. I've hit a
snag with planned comparisons, their box 9.4 and section 9.6. It's a
basic anova design:
treatment <- factor(rep(c("control", "glucose", "fructose",
"gluc+fruct",

Memory problems...leaky?
Hi list folks,
I have been trying to figure out how I can run the script that I have
included below. I have 1.2 gigs of memory on the computer, but this is
not enough, given the size of the input datasets. The input matrix
('input') is a little under 2400 x 2900 cells, and is about 60 megs when
stored on hard drive...what is R doing, that this (small) size of file
takes up so much
