read.table: mysterious line omissions
Hello again,
I am simply trying to import a rectangular table of strings. The
table's dimensions are 1990 x 2, yet my read.table() command can only find
362 of the rows (and they're not the first 362). I would've taken the time
to figure out how to use scan, readLines, or some other tool that can read
in character strings, and then parse and input to a table, but that seems
like

lists and rownames
I'm doing some string manipulation on a vector of file names, and noticed
something curious. When I strsplit the vector, I get a list of
character vectors.
The list is numbered, as lists are. When I cast that list as a data
frame with 'as.data.frame()', the resulting columns have names derived
from the original filenames.
Example code is below. My question is, where are these names

Proper syntax for using varConstPower in nlme
Hello,
Excuse me for posting two questions in one day, but I figured it would be
better to ask my questions in separate emails. I will again give the caveat
that I'm not a statistician by training, but have a fairly decent
understanding of probability and likelihood.
As before, I'm trying to fit a nonlinear model to a dataset which has two main
factors using nlme. Within the dataset

switch() usage
Hello,
I am wondering if it is possible to run separate lines of code within switch()
as one can do in most languages.
For example, I'd like to have switch execute a few lines of code based on the
value passed to it.
For example,
>index = 1
>
>switch(index,
> command 1; command 2; command 3, #execute if index = 1
> command 4; command 5; command 6, #execute if index = 2

Windows 2008R2 AD, kerberos, NFSv4
Hi,
I'm trying to set up NFSv4 on two boxes (centos 5.5) and have it
authenticate against our Windows 2008R2 AD server acting as the KDC.
(samba/winbind is running ok with "idmap config MYCOMPANY: backend = rid"
so we have identical ids across the servers.)
I can mount my test directory fine via NFSv4 *without* the sec=krb5 option.
However, once I put the sec=krb5 option in,

Mouse not working in Hellgate
Ok, I've been a little bit all over with this. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 64bit (kernel 2.6.38.11) and GNOME 2.32.1. I have Wine 1.3.28 installed and Hellgate is installed and runs well, except the mouse does not work. I've seen various patches, but I'm unsure as to how to install them, and I've also seen where someone said that this bug should be fixed if Wine is fully updated

Estimating parameters for a bimodal distribution
For several years, I have been using Splus to analyze an ongoing series of
datasets that have a bimodal distribution. I have used the following
functions, in particular the ms() function, to estimate the parameters: two
means, two standard deviations, and one proportion. Here is the code I've
been using in S:
btmp.bi <- function(vec, p, m1, m2, sd1, sd2)

id of last element in a table
Hi,
I would like to figure out how to determine what the id of the last
element in a table is. Is there an equivalent to the Table.find() method
which will tell me the number of elements in a table? also, maybe more
importantly, where are the available methods on tables documented?
What i am trying to do is to increment the id and work through a table
and check whether the id i am currently

Create a vector of indices from a matrix of start and end points
I have a very large dataframe and wish to extract a subset of rows. I
have a two column matrix listing the starting and ending indices of
one subset on each row. My idea is to create a vector of indices that
could be applied to the dataframe and I have a solution using a for
loop (below). But surely there is some more elegant way to do this! I
looked thorough the archives without

How to get RawInput support in 1.3.18
I compiled the latest developmental release of wine. The changelog seems to indicate that there is now "official" support of RawDeviceInput through the XInput2. I've verified that when I configured my build, it found X11/extensions/XInput2.h, but programs that use RawDeviceInput for mouse movement still seems to require source patches to work.
Did I do something wrong when

AMI disconnects
Hi all.
I've got a perl script that connects to Asterisk's management interface using Asterisk::AMI. So far, its proven to be very useful.
I'm hoping to use this to detect and respond to asterisk restarts and sip reloads.
However, my script gets disconnected quite frequently, causing false alarms in my monitoring.
Here's what the code looks like:
