help converting for loop to vector operation
Dear List,
I have a wrapper function that draws a graph that I'd like to use in a vector-like manner. The for-loop version I currently use is below.
library(ggplot2)
data(economics)
h <- 600
w <- 800
#----------------------------------------------------------
draw_metric_by_date <- function( df, i, smooth=FALSE, BASEPATH ) {
mlabel <- names(df)[i]

Help with maps
A few questions about maps...
(1) How can I find a listing of the internal data sets that map() from the maps library contains?
For example, "usa", "county", "state", "nz" all work. Are there any others?
(2) Is there an easier, more generalized way to produce this (http://www.ai.rug.nl/~hedderik/R/US2004/ ) type of plot than this

Large data sets with R (binding to hadoop available?)
Dear R community,
I find R fantastic and use R whenever I can for my data analytic
needs. Certain data sets, however, are so large that other tools
seem to be needed to pre-process data such that it can be brought
into R for further analysis.
Questions I have for the many expert contributors on this list are:
1. How do others handle situations of large data sets (gigabytes,
terabytes)

Using R with Hadoop/Hive for Big Data
Hive <http://hadoop.apache.org/hive/> is a data warehouse infrastructure
built on top of Hadoop that provides tools to enable easy data
summarization, adhoc querying and analysis of large datasets data stored in
Hadoop files. It provides a mechanism to put structure on this data and it
also provides a simple query language called QL which is based on SQL and
which enables users familiar with

creating a derived variable in a data frame
Hello,
I have read through the manuals and can't seem to find an answer.
I have a categorical, character variable that has hundreds of values. I want to group the existing values of this variable into a new, derived (categorical) variable by applying conditions to the values in the data.
For example, suppose I have a data frame with variables: date, country, x, y, and z.
x,y,z are

an S idiom for ordering matrix by columns?
There's got to be a better way to use order() on a matrix than this:

boxplot including null info from dataframe, not with SQLite dataframe
I have been trying to use R to gather some information from parsed log
files (as part of examining some performance issues). I parsed the
log files and put the data into an SQLite database, and then used
RSQLite to load the data into R. The fields of interest are
controller, action and total_time: controller and action have string
values; total_time has a decimal value.
I first did the

bottom legends in ggplot2 ?
Has anyone had success with producing legends to a qplot graph such that the legend is placed on the bottom, under the abcissa rather than to the right hand side ?
The following doesn't move the legend:
library(ggplot2)
qplot(mpg, wt, data=mtcars, colour=cyl, gpar(legend.position="bottom") )
I am using ggplot2_0.8.2.
Thanks in advance,

lmer syntax, matrix of (grouped) covariates?
I have a fairly large model:
> length(Y)
[1] 3051
> dim(covariates)
[1] 3051 211
All of these 211 covariates need to be nested hierarchically within a
grouping "class", of which there are 8. I have an accessory vector, "
cov2class" that specifies the mapping between covariates and the 8 classes.
Now, I understand I can break all this information up into individual

combine glmnet and coxph (and survfit) with strata()
Dear All,
I want to generate survival curve with cox model but I want to estimate the
coefficients using glmnet. However, I also want to include a strata() term
in the model. Could anyone please tell me how to have this strata() effect
in the model in glmnet? I tried converting a formula with strata() to a
design matrix and feeding to glmnet, but glmnet just treats the strata()
term with one

Using a helper within another helper?
I am trying to push some view logic into a helper. The thought is that
this is a step towards having the business logic in the helper rather
than the view. However, I''m essentially wrapping the checks around an
eventual call to date_select(). The problem I''m having is that the
application complains that it doesn''t know about date_select(). I''m
sure (or

Null Text Fields
I tend to allow nulls in cases where the value is unknown, even if
it''s a text/varchar field. RoR seems to push empty strings into these
fields. Is there any way to get RoR to use NULL vice '''' if the input
box is empty?
Thanks!

Bug reports - auth is broken in Dovecot 2.3.3

The patch modifies configure.ac, so unless you run autogen.sh the configure script isn't modified and that patch doesn't work. Or as an alternative you could simply manually append to config.h:
#define HAVE_CRYPT_H

I applied the patch and recompiled but nothing resolved.
What else can I do?

Dependency-aware scripting tools for R
There are numerous tools like scons, make, ruffus, ant, rake, etc.
that can be used to build complex pipelines based on task
dependencies. These tools are written in a variety of languages, but
I have not seen such a thing for R. Is anyone aware of a package
available? The goal is to be able to develop robust bioinformatic
pipelines driven by scripts written in R.
Thanks,

enabling reproducible research & R package management & install.package.version & BiocLite
Hi,
In support of reproducible research at my Institute, I seek an approach to re-creating the R environments in which an analysis has been conducted.
By which I mean, the exact version of R and the exact version of all packages used in a particular R session.
I am seeking comments/criticism of this as a goal, and of the following outline of an approach:

How to generate Mackey-Glass time series with "ddesolve" package?
I could use some help generating a time series for the Mackey-Glass equation: dx/dt = 0.2 x(t-tau)/(1 + x(t-tau)^10) - 0.1 x(t) for the case there tau = 17. I tried the "ddesolve" package but the dde(...) function seems to hang, not producing anything. Can someone show me the R script how to do this?

reading a "sparse" matrix into R
I have a 47k x 47k adjacency matrix that is very sparse (at most 30
entries per row); my textual representation therefore is simply an
adjacency list of connections between nodes for each row, e.g.
node connections
A B C D E
B A C D
C A E
D A
E A F
F E
G
H
I'd like to import this into a dataframe of node/connection
(character/vector-of-characters) pairs. I've experimented with
