ferret success stories?
Hi all, there was a recent thread[1] on rails-deploy about Ferret in which a lot of people complained of problems using it in production. I''ve been using Ferret (with DRb) for many months now with no serious issues. I''m assuming the posters know what they''re doing so I''m guessing they''re just using Ferret in higher-scale environments than me. I

Index location for multiple servers
I have a rails app that is going to be deployed across several servers. In my understanding of acts_as_ferret, the index files are kept in the index folder in the root of the rails app. This won''t work for multiple servers, of course, since all the servers will have their own directory tree. How are people using ferret for apps deployed on multiple servers? Could I run the index files

[AAF] remote indexing via DRb with acts_as_ferret
Hi! Aaf trunk has undergone several major refactorings the last days, with the result that you can now transparently switch your app from local to remote indexing and back :-) If you plan to scale your app to more than one physical machine, or if you have problems with corrupted indexes and the like under high load, you really should give this a try. I wrote some documentation to get you

Newcomer perceived problems with AAF/Ferret
I blogged about some of the problems with aaf in production (http://www.jroller.com/BrightCandle) yesterday but inspired by the poitive response I thought I would share the perceived problems and discuss some of the potential solutions to help newcomers and make aaf work as if by magic just like Rails does. All of these problems boil down to one simple problem, running acts as ferret in a

Ferret/AAF Stability?
Hello. I''m the author of DataMapper (http://datamapper.org), and am trying to choose what Full-Text-Indexing engine/plugin I want to include by default. I was hoping you guys could help. :-) Sphinx comes highly recommended, but without live index updates, it just doesn''t seem practical for most of my work. I''m most experienced with Solr, but the whole HTTP::Request and

nfs shared and ferret segfault
Hi, I use ferret 0.10.4 whith shared index over NFS directory. There are 2 applications servers. The web server is Mongrel 0.3.13.3 and mongrel_cluster 0.2.0. There are 20 Mongrel processes on each server. Each time my application update a model, Mongrel process stops running with this errro in its log: /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.10.4/lib/ferret/index.rb:663: [BUG] Segmentation fault

Ferret not able to read a Lucene Index?
Hi all, Having problems trying to get Ferret to read an index generated by Lucene. Am I right in thinking Ferret should be able to read a Lucene generated index no problem? Using the code snippets detailed in http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/64099#new Any advice gratefully received. Many Thanks, Steven -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

backgroundrb and ferret
Hi I''m using ferret happily on a site with 260ish documents in the index. Problem is that the site is still in development and I have to rebuild the index fairly regularly as new fields are added to it, like today when i added price. I have been using a rebuild index action in the admin section but this is clearly the wrong way to do it as it completly kills the site during the rebuild.

Ferret DRB - can add/edit index, but can''t search
I''m trying to use the Ferret DRB server to avoid concurrency issues when using multiple mongrels. I can successfully add and edit data on my index via the DRB server, however, when I search the index, I get the following error: DRb::DRbConnError (DRb::DRbServerNotFound): /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/drb/drb.rb:1647:in `current_server'' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/drb/drb.rb:1709:in

Memory concerns ferret 11.4.
Hi list, We just built our own ferret drb server (mostly because we don''t do an indexing from within rails). The ferret drb server only handles index inserts and some deletes. Usually we make batch inserts were we retrieve a couple of hundred or thousands of documents from a database and then inserts them inte ferret one by one. We call flush every 50th file. We are very impressed

Is anyone successfully using acts_as_ferret with Ferret 0.11.4?
Hi all, I upgraded from Ferret 0.11.3 to Ferret 0.11.4 because I was getting intermittent segfaults that seemed to be due to a bug which was fixed (changeset 749). Unfortunately, 0.11.4 + acts_as_ferret seems to be a bad combination. I''m getting the some "fs_store/File Not Found Error occured at <except.c>:117" which was reported in the "Constant 0.11.4

Ferret DRB, UTF-8, Mongrel
I have spent days trying to figure out how to get UTF-8 working with my site. Here''s my environment: Linux version 2.6.16.29-xen_3.0.3.0 Ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24 [i386-linux] Rails 1.2.3 mongrel (1.0.1) mongrel_cluster (1.0.2, 0.2.1) ferret (0.11.4) acts_as_ferret stable plugin Ferret DRB server When I don''t use an analyzer with my acts_as_ferret declaration, everything works

Question on Deploying a Ferret DRb server
(Sorry if some people see this twice. I originally posted this question from ruby-forum.com, but didn''t realize that the Ferret forum was a mirror and that I actually wasn''t a member.) Anyway, I''ve read all the documentation I could find, and read most of this forum, but I''m a still a little confused on running a ferret DRb server. All the examples seem to be

How should this be done with ferret 0.10.1
Hi i like the new version of ferret, has solved a few of my problems but i''m unsure of how to implement the following code in the new version of ferret? if section if !section.empty? qp = Ferret::QueryParser.new("section") query = qp.parse("\"#{section}\"") bq.add_query(query, Ferret::Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST) filter_on =true end

The ferret logs
Hi. We''ve had some problems with ferret not being able to load our classes (stack trace below for the curious). I nailed it down to a deployment issue, where an old instance of ferret drb was running. I don''t understand the details quite yet, but the result was the the old ferret was never shutdown during redeployment, and attempts were made to start up a new one. Anywho,

Cacti - Monitor Ferret Server Stats?
I''m wondering if someone can point me in a direction to monitor the ferret drb server while using cacti. Is it possible to run multiple instances of ferret drb on the same machine, just on different ports? Will it still update the index properly, or will you get collision? New to moving over to the drb server. Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

In Search of Search!
I am implementing a search on my site and was wondering which will be the best way to go about it. We want a full text search and an advance search. We will have huge amounts of data that we would want to search. - on multiple tables. I went through the plugins acts_as_ferret and acts_as_solr. but ferret seems to have a locking problem at high load and solr needs a java server. So what do you

querying returned results
Hi I''m using the acts_as_ferret to index one table in my database. The table contains formation about listed items and each of these items belongs to a section and a category. On the results page I want to have two drop down boxes whose contents are populated depeneding on the returned results. So for example the section drop down should only show sections that exist in the result set,

Multithreading / multiprocessing woes
I''ve been running some multithreaded tests on Ferret. Using a single Ferret::Index::Index inside a DRb server, it definitely behaves for me as if all readers are locked out of the index when writing is going on in that index, not just optimization -- at least when segment merging happens, which is when the writes take the longest and you can therefore least afford to lock out all reads.
