Chronological data manipulation question
Hi all, I currently work on a survey which contains biographical data stored in a chronological way, ie something like : id year variable 001 2000 0 001 2001 0 001 2002 1 001 2003 0 002 1996 0 002 1997 0 002 1998 1 002 1999 0 002 2000 0 where id is a person identifier, year the year of observation and variable the

Sweave processes \Sexpr in commented LaTeX source
Marc, >I have a large .Rnw file and was in the process of doing some debugging. >I had set some R chunks to 'eval=false' in the process. Data manipulations with numbers which are in 'comma' format
Hi R, May be a trivial question, but struggling to find a solution... v=data.frame(a=c("1,234","2,345","5,567")) > v a 1 1,234 2 2,345 3 5,567 I need a column 'b', which is just the addition of column 'a' with 5. How do I do it? And, entries in column 'a' are with commas, always. Also, class(v$a)=factor.

Introduction to R (in french)
Hi all, I recently put a new version of my french introduction to R online. It is more specifically targeted at social sciences students and researchers, but could be interesting for beginners who are not really familiar with statistics and coding. The document is available (in french) in PDF, as well as the Sweave source code, from the following page : http://alea.fr.eu.org/j/intro_R.html

CRAN packages hosting policy
Hi to all, I recently created a small package which contains some simple R functions in order to help students in my research unit to use R. The package is pure R, it passes R CMD check, but it is really designed for internal use and, moreover, it is entirely documented in french. Is it possible to upload and to host this kind of package to CRAN ? Or is it better, as it is quite a private tool

Reproducible Research - Examples
All, Recently I ran across a URL documenting published research using R: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/ccr/ammann/millennium/CODES_MBH.html A note on the site indicates that the code is being revised. The code and data are provided, so that one could reproduce the results without having to buy a proprietary software program. In poking around the R website it is clear that a lot of thought has gone

Size problem with two dotcharts side by side
Dear all, I'm trying to produce two dotcharts side-by-side within a Sweave document. When I'm compiling this example: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} <<fig=T,width=8,height=4>>= par(mfrow = c(1, 2), cex = 0.7) for(i in 1:2) dotchart(1:10) @ <<fig=T,width=8,height=4>>= par(mfrow = c(1, 2), cex = 0.7) for(i in 1:2) hist(1:10) @

Are infix binary operators ** and ^ aliased?
Dear R-help, After making a typo (reminiscent of FORTRAN 77, I guess) I found the following: > identical(all.equal(2^(-10:10), 2**(-10:10)), TRUE) [1] TRUE I have tried to find the documentation about the ** operator but I was unsuccesful this way: > sessionInfo() Version 2.3.1 (2006-06-01) powerpc-apple-darwin8.6.0 attached base packages: [1] "methods" "stats"

RFC: Ability to suppress 'locale' from sessionInfo
The printing of the locale information from sessionInfo is not very tidy. Using toLatex(sessionInfo) pretty much guarantees "badness" from breaking the margin boundary (though my version of TeX no longer reports such errors). A random example is here: http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/Matrix/vignettes/Design-issues.pdf I find the locale information unnecessary and right now I hack

Measurements of 3000 criminals
Hallo everyone, excuse me if this is not a genuine R question but I do not know where to ask else. Referring to e.g. https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2004-December/062114.html I wonder if these measurements of 3000 criminals (raw data) are available anywhere. At least I didn't find them in the R datasets package or by means of Google. What I did find was a table of frequencies of

How to include the documentation of a function in a Sweave document?
Dear R-help, I would like to include the documentation of an R function in an *.rnw document processed by Sweave. Because I'm sharing my *.rnw files with colleagues under Linux and Windows (I'm on Mac OS X), I would like a pure R solution. The naive approach doesn't work, because Sweaving this *.rnw file: -------- tmp.rnw -------- \documentclass{article} \begin{document}

data(lh) time serie parameters
Dear all, I'm confused by the time serie parameters in data(lh) : sueoka:~ lobry$ R --vanilla --quiet > tsp(lh) [1] 1 48 1 because documentation says: QUOTE A regular time series giving the luteinizing hormone in blood samples at 10 mins intervals from a human female, 48 samples. correlation and causality examples
Dear All, I'am looking for examples showing that correlation does not imply causality, the targeted audience consists of undergraduate students (their first year at the university but in the BioMathStat track). All practicals are under R. I was able to extract this from R datasets: ### begin data(sunspots) data(lynx) spots <- window(sunspots, freq = 1, start = 1880, end = 1900) lnx <-

faulty formatting of toLatex(sessionInfo())
Dear all I am writing an Sweave document and have encountered formatting issues with the "locale" part of toLatex(sessionInfo()). The fact that there is no spaces between the various "locale" variables means that LaTeX cannot easily find an appropriate place to break the lines, and some will get printed off screen. Below is the text output, and this .pdf document [1] shows the

par(tmag) question
Dear list, I'm trying to understand the graphical parameters by a systematic exploration of the par() function (if you are interested by the result it's here http://pbil.univ-lyon1.fr/R/fichestd/tdr75.pdf, the comments are all in french but it's pure R code under Sweave). I have a problem with par(tmag) illustrated by the following code:
