Fast way to compute largest eigenvector
Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a function in R that only computes the eigenvector
corresponding to the largest/smallest eigenvalue of an arbitrary real matrix.
Thanks

the puzzle of eigenvector and eigenvalue
Dear all
I am so glad the R can provide the efficient calculate about
eigenvector and eigenvalue.
However, i have some puzzle about the procedure of eigen.
Fristly, what kind of procedue does the R utilize such that the eigen
are obtained?
For example, A=matrix(c(1,2,4,3),2,2)
we can define the eigenvalue lamda, such as
det | 1-lamda 4 | =0
| 2 3-lamda |

Generating a stochastic matrix with a specified second dominant eigenvalue
Hi,
Given a positive integer N, and a real number \lambda such that 0 < \lambda
< 1, I would like to generate an N by N stochastic matrix (a matrix with
all the rows summing to 1), such that it has the second largest eigenvalue
equal to \lambda (Note: the dominant eigenvalue of a stochastic matrix is
1).
I don't care what the other eigenvalues are. The second eigenvalue is

find the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue
Hi,
If I use the eigen() function to find the eigenvalues of a matrix, how can I find the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigen value?
Thanks!

the definition of eigenvector in R
Dear All
i have a little puzzle about eigenvector in the R.
As we know that the eigenvector can be displayed on several form.
For example
A=matrix(c(1,2,4,3),2,2)
if we want to get the eigenvalue and eigenvector, the code followed
eigen(A)
$values
[1] 5 -1
$vectors
[,1] [,2]
[1,] -0.7071068 -0.8944272
[2,] -0.7071068 0.4472136
however, we also can calculate the vector matrix

Having some Trouble Data Structures
Hi All,
I'm trying to run a simulation of host-pathogen evolution based around individuals.
What I need to have is a dataframe or table of some description - describing all the individuals of a pathogen population (so far I've implemented this as a matrix):
ID No_of_Effectors Effectors (Sequences)

Extract cell of many values from dataframe cells and sample from them.
Hi,
First my apologies for a non-working piece of code in a previous submission, I have corrected this error.
I'm doing is individual based modelling of a pathogen and it's host. The way I've thought of doing this is with two dataframes, one of the pathogen and it's genes and effector genes, and one of the host and it's resistance genes. During the simulation, these things

multi-level cox ph with time-dependent covariates
Dear all,
I would like to know if it is possible to fit in R a Cox ph model with
time-dependent covariates and to account for hierarchical effects at
the same time. Additionally, I'd like also to know if it would be
possible to perform any feature selection on this model fit.
I have a data set that is composed by multiple marker measurements
(and hundreds of covariates) at different time

Convert timeseries to transition matrix
Hi All,
Does someone have an idea of how to cleverly convert a categorical
timeseries into a transition matrix?
Ie, I have something like:
x<- c(1,1,2,1,1,2,2,2,1,2),
And I want a matrix with counts and/or probabilities:
> tr <- matrix(c(2,3,2,2),2,2)
> tr
[,1] [,2]
[1,] 2 2
[2,] 3 2
Meaning that there are two transitions from 1 to 1, two from 1 to 2, three
from 2 to 1

Barplot legend position
Dear useRs,
I'm trying to create a barplot like so:
x=matrix(1:10,2,5)
barplot(x,leg=c("left","right"),besid=T)
The legend is placed in default position topright, however the data are
plotted there too. I tried controlling the legend position by adding
x="topleft" but this results in an error that x matches multiple formal
arguments.
Leaving out the legend

Data Censoring and Normality Tests
Hello,
I would like to know if there is a function in R that will test for
normality and handle censored data sets. Currently, I evaluate each
censored data set by the extent to which a normal scores plot
approximate a straight line. For complete data sets I use
shapiro.test().
Below is an example of a censored data set.
data1<-c(0.00, 0.00, 0.00, 5.86, 5.17, 8.17, 5.12, 4.92, 7.08,

bus error macosx/off-topic
Hi All,
I'm building a package using C/C++ and Fortran code which usually runs fine.
However I do get occasional bus errors around the time of exiting one of the
C functions.
Where do I need to be looking to solve this problem?
Do bus errors stem from unmapped memory exceptions? How can I find out if
that is what is happening while running R?
Any hints greatly appreciated.
Best, ingmar

Matrix or grid conversion of spatial data
Dear Happy R-users & experts,
I am in need of advice,
While working with spatial data (x & y coordinates of seed locations) I have come accross the problem that I need to convert my point data into a matrix or grid system. I then need to count how often a point falls into a certain position in the matrix or grid. I have searched all day online, asked collegeas but nothing works.

fitdistr question
Hello,
I tried to fit a poisson distribution but looking at the function
fitdistr() it does not optimize lambda but simply estimates the mean
of the data and returns it as lambda. I'm a bit confused because I was
expecting an optimization of this parameter to gain a good fit...
If I would use mle() of stats4 package or mle2() of bbmle package, I
would have to write the function by myself

Time-Ordered Clustering
Hello All,
Does anyone know of a package that performs constraint-based clusters?
Ideally the package could perform "Time-Ordered Clustering", a technique
applied in a recent journal article by Runger, Nelson, Harnish (using MS
Excel). Quote, "in our specific implementation of constrained
clustering, the clustering algorithm remains agglomerative and
hierarchical, but observations

Stats package
Hi
The cor function in the stats package calculates the correlation between
columns of data, does anyone know if it is at all possible to calculate
the correlation between rows instead ?
Or is there an appropriate package or function that is more appropriate
I'd like to calculate spearman & pearson correlations between rows.
Many thanks

Webm files written without duration in header
Hi Fred.
Appreciate your response.
Maybe in my explanation I have some red and green apples, but I can
agree that my understanding is as you explained it. 😊
The point is that if I can successfully stream mp4 with H.264 and AAC
encoding without any issues to icecast, I can then use ffmpeg to
turn it into HLS which then solves my iOS support issue. The CPU
cost of repackaging MP4 into HLS
