Averaging over columns
Hi I've been reading the help for by and aggregate but can't get my head round how to do this. I have a data frame - the first three columns are replicate measurements, then the next 3 are replicates etc up to 36 (so 12 variables with 3 replicate measurements each). I want to compute the mean for each of the 12 variables, so that, for each row, I have 12 means. A grouping variable

Linux C++ program using 3rd-party DLL?
Hi, I'm working with a spectrometer at an research institute but they only have windows 16-bit dll to control the sprectrometer. The dll is documented. My question is: Can I write a linux c++ program that uses this dll with wine? On the wine webpage it says "Optional use of external vendor DLLs" but how do I do it? On a first glance I have also not found any hints on that in

Plot table of counts
I have a data set which is comprised of counts, that is, the number of times a mass spectrometer measured a particular mass at a particular time (the rows and columns of the table). Is there a way to make a plot so that it draws a square at the mass/time spot on the graphic if there is a count and leave it empty if it's empty?

averaging pairs of columns in a dataframe
Dear all, I have a dataframe with 132 columns and 100 rows. Every 2nd column is a repeat measurement so that the columns could be titled, a a b b c c d d etc. I would like to average the repeats such that I am left with a data frame of 66 columns (of means) and 100 rows. I have been trying to use rowMeans but have not been able to average the pairs of columns, only the whole dataframe. Any

Help with loops
Hi I am trying to create a loop which averages replicates in my data. The original data has many rows. and consists of 40 column zz[,2:41] plus row headings in zz[,1] I am trying to average each set of values (i.e. zz[1,2:3] averaged and placed in average_value[1,2] and so on. below is my script but it seems to be stuck in an endless loop Any suggestions?? for (i in 1:length(average_value[,1])) {

Averaging dataframes that are stored in a list
Dear R-helpers, I have a list containing 5000 elements, each element is a dataframe containing one ID column (identical over the 5000 dataframes) and 9 numeric variables, e.g. ID VAR1 VAR2 VAR3 ... VAR9 I would like to create a new dataframe containing the ID column and the mean values of the 9 numeric variables. So, the structure of this new dataframe would be identical to the structure of the

multivariate graphs, averaging on some vars
Hello I have a table of this kind: function x1 x2 x3 2.232 1 1 1.00 2.242 1 1 1.01 2.732 1 1 1.02 2.770 1 2 1.00 1.932 1 2 1.01 2.132 1 2 1.02 3.222 1.2 1 1 ..... ... .. .. The table represents the values of a function(x1, x2, x3) for each combination x1, x2, x3. I'd like to generate a plot where each point has the coordinates x=x1, y=x2,

averaging two matrices whilst ignoring missing values
Hi folks, I'm trying to do something that seems like it should easy, but it apparently isn't. I have two large matrices, both containing a number of missing values at different cells. I would like to average these matrices, but the NAs are preventing me. I get a "non-numeric argument to binary operator" error. That's the first problem.

newbie question: ROW average
Dimitris Rizopoulos wrote: > look at ?rowMeans; you can also use "apply(mat, 1, mean)" but > rowMeans() is better. By my reading of the question, this is not what Ezhil wants. He said: ``I have a 992 x 74 matrix. I would like to form a new matrix by averaging each 4 rows from the original one.'' I.e. he wants (I think) the first row of the new matrix to be the

replacing missing values with row average
Hello, I have some dataset, which i read it from external file using the (data <- read.csv("my file location")) and read as a dataframe > is(data) [1] "data.frame" "list" "oldClass" "vector" but i have also converted this into a matrix and tried to apply my code but didnt work. Anyways, suppose i have the following data.

summarizing a complex dataframe
I need some help summarizing complex data frames (small example below): m1_1 m2_1 m3_1 m1_2 m2_2 m3_2 i1 1 1 1 2 2 2 i1 2 1 1 2 2 2 i2 2 2 1 2 2 2 For an arbitrary number of columns (say m1 ?. m199) where the column names have variable patterns, and such that each set of columns is repeated (with potentially unique data) an

separate row averages for different parts of an array
I have an array with 44800 columns and 24 rows I would like to compute the row average for the array 100 columns at a time, so I would like to end up with an array of 24 rows x 448 columns. I have tried using apply(dataset, 1, function(x) mean(x[])), but I am not sure how to get it to take the average 100 columns at a time. Any ideas would be welcomed. thanks, Spencer [[alternative HTML

linear regression with repeated measures
Dear list, this seemed to me like a very trivial question, but finally I haven't found any similar postings with suitable solutions on the net ... Basically, instead of regressing two simple series of measures 'a' and 'b' (like b ~ a), I would like to use independent replicate measurements for each variable at each level (ie, instead of having just one 'a' and one

help to speed up loops in r
Hi i am using a script which involves the following loop. It attempts to reduce a data frame(zz) of 95000 * 41 down to a data frame (averagedreplicates) of 95000 * 21 by averaging the replicate values as you can see in the script below. This script however is very slow (2days). Any suggestions to speed it up. NB I have also tried using rowMeans rather than adding the 2 values and dividing by 2.

running mean in blocks
Hello, I am running R on Linux and have a column of data 10000 points long. I would like to take a moving average of say 100 points at a time, so I end up with one column of 100 points. What is the simplest way of doing this? I would like to be able to adjust the width of the averaging blocks. Thanks much! [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

efficient overlapping average curve on original curves
Dear useRs, my question could be very basic for which i apologize in advance. Each column of a matrix with dimensions 365 rows and 37 columns was drawn against another matrix of dimensions 365 rows and 1 column. with that i was able to draw 37 curves on the same axis. now i want to draw an average curve of these 37 curves on the same axis in such a way that all the curves (average and 37

how to calculate the average values of each row in a matrix
Hello, I have a matrix (class matrix) composed of GridCell (row and column). The matrix value is the beta diversity index value between two grids. Now I would like to get the average value of each GridCell. Please kindly advise how to make the calculation. Thank you. Elaine The matrix looks like (cited from Michael Friendly) I would like to get the average value of each color. Obs

average columns of data frame corresponding to replicates
Hi Group, I have a data frame below. Within this data frame there are samples (columns) that are measured more than once. Samples are indicated by "idx". So "id1" is present in columns 1, 3, and 5. Not every id is repeated. I would like to create a new data frame so that the repeated ids are averaged. For example, in the new data frame, columns 1, 3, and 5 of the original
