writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other ArCGIS compatible file
I am not sure a previous e-mail reached the list (no mail aknowledgement from R-boundle etc.). The question was how to write polygon or segment coordinates into a shapefile set or any other ArcGIS supported format. The library shapefiles seems to do something but the documentation is a bit beyond of my mind.... and I cannot get the meaning of the functions write**** and its application to the case

counties in different colours using map()
Hi, I would like to plot a map of US counties using different colors. map() seems to be the function to use, e.g. library(maps); map('usa'); map('county', 'colorado', add=T,fill = T, col=c(1:5)) plots Colorado counties using colours 1 to 5. However, I want each color to represent a certain value - a value to be picked from a data frame. This code should show a

writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other A rcGIS compatible file
The main limitation of the shapefiles package that I put together is that it does not create shapefiles from R objects - rather it only writes shapefiles that have been read into R and manipulated within the constraints of the existing file structure. By this I mean that for example you can change the coordinates of points and write them back out. Or you can add a bunch of blank columns in the

adjacency matrix
Dear R experts, I am new to the list and R software. I need to convert arcview file to Winbugs having R has middle package. Got from friends that it is possible following the steps: 1. Converting arcview shapefile to "cgm clear text file" 2. Downloading "convert.r" to into R 2.1 use source("convert.r") 2.2 convert("filename_cgm") without the

Re: using shapefile as owin
My sincerest apologies, as this is a very elementary problem, but I have searched through archives and FAQs and on the web, and I am at the end of my own resources. I need to do analysis of a spatial point process occuring with four counties, using spatstat. I've had no trouble importing the shapefiles, but I can't seem to figure out what I need to do in order to use the boundary as an

Reading Shapefiles
I am attempting to write what MATLAB does as : [S,A]= shaperead() which returns an N by 1 geographic array structure S containing geometric information, and a paralell N by 1 attribute structure array, A containing feature attribute information. How can this be done with R code I tried using shp<-readShapePoints() but this doesnt return the same structure that I am looking for. Please

color.ramp in maptools
Dear list members, I am trying to use the maptools library to display geographical data. At the moment I have some trouble understanding how the " auxvar " variable is supposed to be used in the plot.Map function. I am using R Version 1.8.1 (2003-11-21) on Linux Looking at the plot.Map function itself, I see that it calls a color.ramp function (I am reporting only the relevant

PBSmapping and shapefiles
Hi, Is there a way, preferably with R, to read shapefiles and transform them in a format that I could then use with package PBSmapping? I have been able to read such files into R with maptools' read.shape and plot it with plot.Map, but I'd like to bring the data to PBSmapping and plot from there. I also looked at the package shapefile, but it does not seem to do what I want

map data.frame() data after having linked them to a read.shape() object
Dear all, I try to first link data in a data.frame() to a (polygon) read.shape() object and then to plot a polygon map showing the data in the data.frame. The first linking is called "link" in ArcView and "relate" in ArcMap. I use the code shown below, though without success. Help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Using GIS data in R
I have a simple problem: I need to load a ERSI shapefile of US states and check whether or not a set of points are within the boundary of these states. I have the shapefile, I have the coordinates but I'm having a great deal of difficulty bringing the two together. The problem is the various GIS packages for R do not play well with each other. sp, shapefiles, maptools, etc all use different

North Arrow (.png file) on a Map
Hi list. I would like to know how do I insert a North arrow, stored as a png file in my computer, in a map? I found lots of post asking similar things, one of them mentioned the pixmap package. The map was done using map() and shapefiles (the code is below). I’m using the pixmap () and addlogo() functions. Well I can import the png with pixmap() function (I guess, once there’s no error message),
