How to handle large dataframes?
Dear all I imported a Stata .dta file with the read.dta-function from the foreign-package. The dataframe's dimensions are > dim(d.apc) [1] 15806 1300 Importing needs up to 15 min and calculations with these data are rather slow (although I subset the data before starting analyses). My questions are: 1. Has someone experiences importing Stata files (alternatives to read.dta) ? 2.

Possible bug with scrambled messages on Win7-64bit using R2.12.0 (32/64 bit version)
When executing 'dyn.load("this/dll/does/not/exist.dll")' the resulting error message is scrambled. Not all characters will be displayed and when I select the empty region text disappears/reappears. For a screenshot see: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2602516/dyn.load_error1.PNG and http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2602516/dyn.load_error2.PNG. Note: I had the same problem with xlsReadWrite

extract index during execution of sapply
Hi there During execution of sapply I want to extract the number of times the function given to supply has been executed. I came up with: mylist <- list(a=3,b=6,c=9) sapply(mylist,function(x)as.numeric(gsub("[^0-9]","",deparse(substitute(x))))) This works fine, but looks quite ugly. I'm sure that there's a more elegant way to do this. Any suggestion? Christian

Wireless LANs and Asterisk
Has anyone had any experience with wireless LANs and Asterisk? We have and here are my impressions. We configured an Asterisk in the office as a precaution to see how it would work for our own retail customers. Our office is open space, about 800 sq ft. (20x40 area). We use Snom200 and Grandstream SIP phones. Using the latest Linksys wireless access point (WAP54g) and 3 wireless bridges

Ubuntu and sources.list question about mirror sites...
Evening all: Thought I'd announce myself with a question about setting up sources.list to be able to begin download and install of R. Running version 7.10 of Ubuntu. (Tried 8.04 but found it slow and finicky with my hardware. Perhaps will try 8.10 or above, but that's a thought for another time.) Followed the notes on the R site and added the following lines to my sources.list: deb

survSplit with data.frame containing a Surv object
Dear All, since years I am struggling with Surv objects in data.frames. The following seems to have to do with it. See below the modified example from the help page of survSplit. The original works, as expected. If, however, a Surv object is added to the data.frame, each record gets doubled. Is there some solution other than avoiding Surv objects in data.frames? Thanks, Heinz

R CMD check: Locale not set to C?
Dear All The "R CMD check" on the "zoo" (1.7-11) package results in an error on my environment. factor, as.factor and levels
Dear All, to my surprise as.factor does not accept a levels argument. Maybe I did not read the documentation well enough. See the example below. I wanted to use ch1 as factor in the newdata argument of survfit, so I assumed that I could write as.factor(ch1, levels=ch1), since the order should be kept. But as.factor(ch1, levels=ch1) results in the error: Error in as.factor(ch1, levels = ch1)

Using Asterisk to Find a Live Person
That's the least ambiguous subject I could muster. I'm relatively new to Asterisk and while I'm certain there is a way to do this, I'm unsure how. My question is this: How do I take an incoming call, put the person on hold, and in the background (i.e. while they are on hold) begin trying other phone numbers until someone answers? Example: Jane calls the Network Operations line.

survexp - unable to reproduce example
Dear All, when I try to reproduce an example of survexp, taken from the help page of survdiff, I receive the error message "Error in floor(temp) : Non-numeric argument to mathematical function" . It seems to come from match.ratetable. I think, it has to do with character variables in a ratetable. I would be interested to know, if it works for others. With an older version of

unexpected lining up of labels in axis(4, hadj=1) (PR#11840)
Please explain (I am quoting the FAQ) how you 'are sure you know for certain what it ought to have done'. Please quote and give exact references to the documentation that led you to expect what you expected (but did not actually describe). I would have expected it to work as documented using the default value mgp=c(3,1,0), and that is what I see when I run the example. As far as I

retain class after merge
Dear All, is there a simple way to retain the class attribute of a column, if merging two data.frames? When merging the example data.frames form help(merge) I am unable to keep the class attribute as set before merging (see below). Two columns are assigned new classes before merge (myclass1, myclass2), but after merge the resulting column has class "character". best regards, Heinz

assign object to list
Dear all I want to generate a list like this: a <- data.frame(1:10) attr(a,'myattribute') <- 'something' b <- data.frame(11:20) attr(b,'myattribute') <- 'anything' mylist <- list(a,b) Is there a way to place the dataframes into the list giving them the attribute at the same time? I don't want to create all the dataframes in my workspace first.
