Random number generation
Colleagues, I have encountered behavior of random number generation that eludes me. I generate a random integer in a particular range using the following code: sample(1000:9999, size=1) This code exists within a script that starts with the command: remove(list=ls()) Each time that I run the script, it yields the same random number: 6420. I thought that the problem might result from

Understanding the Examples
Hello everybody, I am trying to understand the Advance routing and Traffic control. In the examples section of the how to an example script is given. Minor warning about seq
I spent more time than I should have debugging a script because I wanted x<-seq(0,100)*0.1 but typed x<-seq(O:100)*0.1 seq(0:100) yields 1 to 101, Clearly my own brain to fingers fumble, but possibly one others may want to avoid it. JN

if ... problem with compound instructions
I am having problems with the 'if' syntax. I have an n x 4 matrix, X say. The first two columns hold x, y values and I am attempting to fill the second two columns with the quadrant in which the datapoint (x, y) is and with the heading angle. So I have two problems 1) how to do this elegantly (at which I've failed as I can't seem to vectorize the problem) and 2) how to

centos3.8 - outdated coreutils package
Hello, I have a number centos3.8 installations. Recently I have figured out that version of coreutils is : [ivan at algol ivan]$ rpm -q coreutils coreutils-4.5.3-28.1 while RedHat has released an bux fix errata to that package: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2006-0670.html Actually I discovered that when I encounter bug that should be fixed by this update:

Principal Components for matrices with NA
Hello, I have a matrix with 267 columns, all rows of which have at least one column missing (NA). All three methods i've tried (pcs, princomp, and prcomp) fail with either "Error in svd(zsmall) : infinite or missing values in 'x'" (latter two) or "Error in cov.wt(z) : 'x' must contain finite values only" The last one happens because of the check if

Saving nothing with save()
Scenario: Here I am working away in R. I've got results that prove global warming is anthropogenic and also the solution for producing limitless carbon-neutral energy from nuclear fusion. Its been a good day. So, I want to save my work. I don't want to overwrite my current .RData, so I save it to another file: save(file="prize.RData") # just need to email this to the Nobel

functional (?) programming in r
the following is a trivialized version of some functional code i tried to use in r: (funcs = lapply(1:5, function(i) function() i)) # a list of no-parameter functions, each with its own closure environment, # each supposed to return the corresponding index when applied to no arguments sapply(funcs, function(func) func()) # supposed to return c(1,2,3,4,5) there is absolutely nothing unusual in

Alpha channel in colorRamp() and colorRampPalette()
Hi all, I had the need to create a colorbar considering the alpha channel of the colors, but colorRamp() and colorRampPalette() ignored the alpha argument in rgb(). So I performed some minor modifs. in their codes, as to support the interpolation using the alpha channel. I guess that those simple modifications might be useful for other people, so perhaps it would be worth to add them to

stochastic process transition probabilities estimation
Hi all, I'm new with R (and S), and relatively new to statistics (I'm a computer scientist), so I ask sorry in advance if my question is silly. My problem is this: I have a (sample of a) discrete time stochastic process {X_t} and I want to estimate Pr{ X_t | X_{t-l_1}, X_{t-l_2}, ..., X_{t-l_k} } where l_1, l_2, ..., l_k are some fixed time lags. It will be enough for me to compute

Failure to rename files that have active file handles
We have just installed Samba 1.9.18p10 on an Ultra Sparc, Solaris 2.5.1 . So far we have been very impressed with the resilience and performance of Samba in contrast to Hummingbird and Solstice NFS products while doing large product builds on our NT4.0 sp4 machines. However we have come across one little problem, which may be down to configuration, that has left us "worried" about
