[PATCH] test_compression.sh
* Use `mktemp` instead of playing with date(1).
* Use -f instead of removing the file every time.
* "echo ERROR; exit 1" is what die() is for.
* Some cosmetic renamings ('k' to 'comp' for compression etc).
* Remove the MacOSX comment. It's not MacOSX specific,
and it's not a problem anyway. The number behaves just right.
* Remove the $((${size}+10)). It's

Scanning data lines with blanks in character vars
Hello, I'm trying to read data in from a file using scan(). The last field is a
character string that contains blanks. I had read it in in S-Plus using this
code:
ifile <- list(entry=0,measure=0,st=0,count=0,score=0,
error=0,inmsq=0,instd=0,outms=0,outstd=0,displc=0,ptbis=0,a=0,
r="",name="")
if.widths <- c(1, 5, 8, 3, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 2,

SweaveInput and absolute paths
Hi,
Is there a way to turn off the automatic inclusion of "./" at the
beginning of a path specified in an \SweaveInput{} instruction?
I'd like to create some reusable "template modules" of Sweave code and
put them in a standard directory like
/Resources/Affymetrix
Then the corresponding file that uses one of these would include a
command like

Sweave absolute path versus relative path
Sorry, I should have really started a new thread with this because really it
is a new question only loosely related to the first Q.
Thanks for the assist.
As suggested I switched over to sweave. I have a lot of .tex tables that I

[PATCH] Improve LPC order guess
Hi,
This patch improves compression a very tiny bit on average, but
up to 0.1 percentage point for classical music. I haven't found
any tracks that show worsening compression with this patch.

Previewing oggvorbis files in GNOME...
Hi. I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me a little help trying
to figure something out: I presently am running CentOS4.1 with GNOME as
my desktop (It runs quite well, I must say!). I just have a little
curiosity: I have a few audio files (.wav, .mp3 and .ogg) and I like to
"preview" them. When run my mouse over the .wav files (and mp3 files)

[PATCH 5/5] mllib: add a new run_command helper
Add a simple helper to run a command from a sequence of arguments,
without using a shell: this should help reducing the amount of quoting
ineeded, since arguments are passed straight as such.
Make use of it in the places currently using shell_command, and which
don't assume they can run anything (so no shell redirections, `env`,
etc).

temp Rscript file collision on Windows
Hi,
The code below (found in src/gnuwin32/system.c) is almost
guaranteed to do the wrong thing if 2 Rterm processes are
started at the same time (or less than 1 second apart, the
resolution of time() being 1 second):
/* tmpfile() seems not to work on Vista: it tries to write in c:/
ifp = tmpfile();
*/

char *tm;
tm = getenv("TMPDIR");
if (!isDir(tm)) {

[PATCH 1/5] mllib: make external_command echo the command executed
Add an optional parameter to disable this behaviour, so the Curl module
in v2v won't print user-sensible data (like passwords).

sqldf for Very Large Tab Delimited Files
Hi All,
I have a very (very) large tab-delimited text file without headers. There
are only 8 columns and millions of rows. I want to make numerous pieces of
this file by sub-setting it for individual stations. Station is given as in
the first column. I am trying to learn and use sqldf package for this but am
stuck in a couple of places.
To simulate my requirement, I have taken iris dataset as an

[PATCH INCOMPLETE] Rewrite virt-make-fs in C (originally Perl).
I thought it would be easy to rewrite virt-make-fs in C.
Two days later ...
The Perl program uses a lot of external commands, which makes
it pretty tedious to implement in C.

for loop and if problem
Hi,
I'm heaving difficulties with a dataset containing gene names and positions
of those genes.
Not such a big problem, but each gene has multiple exons so it's hard to say
where de gene starts and where it ends. I want the starting and ending
position of each gene in my dataset.
Attached is the dataset:

vanilla rsync 3.0.9 hangs after transferring ~2000 files
Hello rsync folks
I'm trying to use rsync for backing up our servers. This mostly works extremely well, with no problems.
However, 1 server is giving me a lot of trouble. It has a directory with (currently) 734088 files in it, and every time I try to backup this dir, rsync hangs after transferring roughly 2000 files. Sometimes it's around 1800, sometimes it's over 2100 (I think), but

read file with readBin (the file was saved with a C-routine)
Hello!
I have problems with using of "readBin" to read files, which was written in C with "fwrite". In the C-File there is the following Code:
fwrite(MyitINI,sizeof(itINItype),1,outfile);
where MyitINI is a structure of the following form
typedef struct{
int KernelFileSave; /* Determined, if Systemmatrix saved or not.*/
char KernelFileName[200]; /* A-Matrix name
