Performance of concatenating strings
Hi,
I would like to ask how the paste(S1, S2, sep="") function internally
works. Are the two stings copied to a new String?
I have a program where successively strings are build up. First the
program calls an external function and depending on the result it
builds up strings to visualize the result. The external function is
really fast, also for huge input data. But the

Embedding R in C application
To whom it may concern,
I am very interested in embedding the R functionality in our
application. This is a C application that currently runs on Win32, but
will also run on Linux in the future. From the material that I have
seen, I need R compiled as a shared library to evaluate R expressions
from C. Is this correct? If so, can I download this shared library from
somewhere? Is there any API

5.2 x86_64 DVD
I've pulled this down with Firefox, wget, a bittorrent client and an ftp
client using Windows as well as Linux hosts. Is something wrong with the
distributed DVD image? It has failed an MD5 check every time I've pulled
it down.

Output non-HTML (CSV) from Rails
Hi,
I want to offer a CSV download of data in my Rails app (eg. An "Export
to Excel" link to grab the current view of tabulated data).
However, I can''t seem to break-out of the Rails framework to output this
non-HTML data. Even if I eliminate my layout template from my view, the
most basic view (no HTML) will still wrap the output in

Linking C/C++ GUI to R.dll
Hi,
I am in the process of linking a C/C++ application to the R.dll
directly. I have obtained the R source code and compiled it
successfully. I have also successfully linked the R.dll directly into
our application and have made calls successfully into the R.dll that are
included in the sample rtest.c and in the "Writing R Extensions - The R
API".

variable of mathematics string not interpreted
Hi everybody,
my goal is to display symbols on the x-axis of a barplot.
I read some mathematics strings in a file and convert them to an expression
as follows:
tt<- scan(file = fstr ,'what' ='character', sep = "");
for (iaa in 1:length(tt)) {
tt[iaa]<-do.call(expression, lapply(tt[iaa], as.name));
}
I obtained the following result:
tt =

FBT Provider
Is there a list anywhere of the DTrace FBT provider calls for each version of Solaris since the Nevada build that hosed the DTrace Toolkit. I have no issue with rewriting what I need, but I am hoping to stave off having to look at all the source code to find everything. I know there is a new provider under development, but I need to be able to program DTrace routines for all the updates in

Help with TextSearch :all and MySQL
Hi,
I really need help with making the ''searches_on :all'' in Duane Johnson''s
TextSearch work with MySQL (not sure if it works with other db''s).
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/TextSearch
I realize that there are other search packages out there. But this
particular solution best fits my small needs of searching a small
database.

More precise documentation of on.exit() [when leaving function vs. "context"]
The current documentation of ?on.exit reads [1]

This is almost always how it is used, however I don't see that as
explaining this other common way to use on.exit():
local({
old = setwd(...)
on.exit(setwd(old))
readLines(...)
})
There's not really a "function" here. It may be

setwd in windows
Dear friends - windows R 3.3.3 - sorry to ask a simple question - but I
cannot make setwd work properly in scripts
In the example below I have made a directory in C (firstdir) and a
directory in that (secdir) and the intention is to change directory to
the second from the first - it works when I put the entire path but not
the tilde - what am I missing? I was around rwf 2.14 as per the help

Changing tables within rails app
Hi,
I want to know if my idea is possible within the rails framework.
I want to write a rails app that uses the same code to manage two
classes of widgets; "wired widgets" and "wireless widgets".
For the most part, all the code to manage these two classes of widgets
will be identical. The only differing part are some of the underlying
field names in each respective db table

Sweave: conflict between setwd and \SweaveOpts{prefix.string=}
Hello
I think there is a conflict between setwd() and
\SweaveOpts{prefix.string=}. In the same document, those both command
get Sweave confuse the files and directories. See:
say my .Rnw document is in File1
If one inserts some setwd() for another file:
-setwd(File2)
then the command \SweaveOpts{prefix.string=graphics/Rplots} will search
the "graphics" folder in File2 because of

How to make a 2-dim array being "interpreted" as an array rather than as a matrix
Dear List
A 2-dimensional array seems to be "interpreted" as a matrix whereas higher dimensional arrays are interpreted as arrays, e.g.

> a2 <- array(1:4,c(2,2))
> class(a2)

If I write a generic function (apologies if this is the wrong word) on arrays as
foo <- function(x)

SCSI tape drive device
I have a SCSI tape backup unit attached to a kvm host managed by
libvirt. Is there a way to expose the SCSI device in libvirt so I could
pass the device to a virtual machine and have the virtual machine
control the tape backup?
Defining the device as a SCSI disk does not appear to work.
In this situation, live migration is not an issue. The VM would always
be tied to this host.
