Problems with character spacing in windows metafiles...
This problem was posted a couple years ago here:
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/04/01/0231.html
Using Windows XP with R 2.3.1, I am now experiencing the same problem again:
when a plot is saved and/or copied as a WMF, the labels do not have the
correct character spacing. I am trying to insert the WMF into a MS Word
2003 document (my first mistake, I know), but even when the WMF is

levene.test
I am trying to use Levene's test (of package car), but I do
not understand quite well how to use it. '?levene.test' does
not unfortunately provide any example. My data are in a data
frame and correspond to 1 factor plus response. Could
someone please give me an example about how to use the command
levene.test(y, group)
Thanks in advance,

bootstrapping Levene's test
Hello all,
I am low down on the learning curve of R but so far I have had little
trouble using most of the packages. However, recently I have run into
a wall when it comes to bootstrapping a Levene's test (from the car
package) and thought you might be able to help. I have not been able
to find R examples for the "boot" package where the test statistic
specifically uses a

Why warnings using lmer-model with family=binomial
Hi all!
My question is why, and what I can do about that
I sometimes, but not always, get warning-messages like
nlminb returned message singular convergence (7)
in: LMEopt(x = mer, value = cv)
or
IRLS iterations for PQL did not converge
when trying to fit a model looking like this:
lmer<-(cbind(Diseased,Healthy)~Fungus+(1|Family)+(1|Fungus:Family),
family="binomial") to four

replace NA with factor class
Dear all,
I have a tree data matrix. For some trees I lack info about tree species,
but I want to set them to be spruce. For some reason the tree species names
on the remaining (non-NA) rows are changed into numbers (that I do not
recognise).
I guess that ifelse is not the correct function to use, but I have not
found any better one in my searches.
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Tord

T1 Integrator Birch
I'm thinking about replacing my Birch T1 integrator with an Asterisk box.
The Integrator has 12 voice & 768k data, so the Asterisk box would
become a router & PBX.
Has anyone done anything similar, what experiences have you seen &/or
read about.
TIA

Difference in Levene's test between R and SPSS
Hello,
I notice that when I do Levene's test to test equality of variances across
levels of a factor, I get different answers in R and SPSS 16.
e.g.: For the chickwts data, in R, levene.test(weight, feed) gives
F=0.7493, p=0.5896.
SPSS 16 gives F=0.987, p=0.432
Why this difference? Which one should I believe? (I would like to believe
R :)

The test that I was thinking of basically does an anova on a modified
response variable that is the absolute value of the difference between an

Can I index a dataframe with a reference from/to a second dataframe?
Hello,
I am unable to figure out how to code a new column in a data frame based
on an existing column that matches a column in a reference data frame,
in a relational-db fashion. I would like this to maintain a minimum set
of reference tables that may be reused over several similar datasets.
Specifically, I have two data frames as listed below, 'Bos' and 'tree.'

How to calculate the AUC in R
Hello R-listers,
I'm working in an experiment that try to determine the degree of
infection of different clones of a fungus and, one of the measures we
use to determine these degree is the counting of antibodies in the
plasma at different dilutions, in this experiment the maximum number of
dilutions was eleven. I already checked for differences on the maximum
concentration of the

ANOVA on residuals to check for equality of variances
Hi all,
I know that I can run an one way ANOVA on the absolute residual values
to check the assumption of equal variances:
model<- lm(y~x)
summary(lm(abs(model$resid~x)))
What if I have two factors? As far as I know I have to check this
assumption on very factor/level combination. So if I have 3 factors with
three levels, I would have to test 9 factor/level combinations. Here
comes my

Levene's Test for Homogeneity of Variance
Hi, All!
To calculate Levene's Test for Homogeneity of Variance I use R Commander,
and this is the output:

group 1 0.8739 0.3567

I am not sure what means "Pr(>F)"? Can anyone explain/translate this?

Classic Levene Test of variances
Hello,
I am searching for the classic Levene test of variances in R but I don't find the function. Is there any command or do I have to programm the test by myself? Does anybody know? Help would be fine because R is very new to me.

"Quality" vs. "bitrate"
I just had another thought on this topic.
What if we have a setting to select the maximum possible
bitrate instead of a target bitrate setting.
This satisfies the streaming people, but means that for
an ordinary user to set a bitrate he'll have to set the
quality to 9.999999 *and* the maximum bitrate to whatever
he wants.
ie. If he sets quality to "near CD" and max_bitrate to

can not connect to the shared printer
Hi there,
I'm learning Samba and I really appreciate somebody out there can help
me out. I'm using RedHat advanced server and a windows 2000. I created a
workgroup on samba and only samba machine and win2k machine are members.
I shared the printer attached to the Linux. From win2k PC, I can see the
workgroup, but I can not find the samba host from the workgroup, nor
does the printer.
