finite mixture model (2-component gaussian): plotting component gaussian components?
Dear Knowledgeable R Community Members,
Please excuse my ignorance, I apologize in advance if this is an easy question, but I am a bit stumped and could use a little guidance.
I have a finite mixture modeling problem -- for example, a 2-component gaussian mixture -- where the components have a large overlap, and
I am trying to use the "mclust" package to solve this problem.
I need

Multivariate spline regression and predicted values
Hello,
I am trying to estimate a multivariate regression of Y on X with
regression splines. Y is (nx1), and X is (nxd), with d>1. I assume the
data is generated by some unknown regression function f(X), as in Y =
f(X) + u, where u is some well-behaved regression error. I want to
estimate f(X) via regression splines (tensor product splines). Then, I
want to get the predicted values for some new

Probable bug in "An Introduction to R" (PR#10777)
Both the document and R itself are at 2.6.2 (2008-02-08). When I run in
the Windows R console the command
lines(density(eruptions, bw=0.1))
found in ? 8.2, I get:
Error in plot.xy(xy.coords(x, y), type = type, ...) :
plot.new has not been called yet

about different bandwidths in one graph
Thank you in advance.
Now I want to make comparison of the different bandwidth h in a normal
distribution graph.
This is the table of bandwidth h: thumb rule (normal)--0.00205; thumb
rule(Epanech.)--0.00452; Plug-in (normal)--0.0009;
Plug-in(Epanech.)--0.002.
this is the condition: N=1010 data sample is from normal distribution
N(0,0.0077^2). The grid points are taken to be [-0.05,0.05] and

plot question
Hi everyone,
I have what may appear to be a newbie question, but I have looked
everywhere I can think to look and I cannot find an answer. On page 35
of "An Introduction to R" the following command appears:
plot(ecdf(eruptions), do.points=FALSE, verticals=TRUE). What is the
do.points argument? I know what it does (suppresses printing of the
points) but where can I find help on it?

Cumulative Frequency Graph
Hi,
I am trying to create a Cumulative Frequency graph and I am using the
following example:
http://www.r-tutor.com/elementary-statistics/quantitative-data/cumulative-frequency-graph
When I plot this data, how do I put in "real values" on the x-axis, rather
than the values that
are used for the breaks
Thanks

example of geom_contour() with function argument
Hi,
This is not a HW problem, sadly: I was last in a classroom 30 years ago,
and can no longer run off to the instructor :-(
I apologize but I cut and paste the wrong snippet earlier and made a typo
in doing so, but the result is the same with the more appropriate snippet.
require(mvtnorm)
require(ggplot2)
set.seed(1234)
xx <- data.frame(rmvt(100, df = c(13, 13)))
v <- ggplot(data = xx,

Hello Ulrik,
I apologize, but I can not see how to provide a pdf in place of the density
function which calculates a KDE (that is, something from the dataset in the
example). Can you please point to the specific example that might help?
Here is what I get:
require(mvtnorm)
require(ggplot2)
set.seed(1234)
xx <- data.frame(rmvt(100, df = c(13, 13)))

shapiro wilk normality test
Hi everybody,
somehow i dont get the shapiro wilk test for normality. i just can?t
find what the H0 is .
i tried :
shapiro.test(rnorm(5000))
Shapiro-Wilk normality test
data: rnorm(5000)
W = 0.9997, p-value = 0.6205
If normality is the H0, the test says it?s probably not normal, doesn
?t it ?
5000 is the biggest n allowed by the test...
are there any other test ? ( i know qqnorm

operator problem within function
Dear all,
i have a problem with processing dataframes within a function using the "$".
Here´s my code:
recode_items = function(dataframe,number,medium=2){
# this works
q<-paste("columna",number,sep="")
# this does not work, particularly because "dataframe" is not processed
# dataframe should be: givenframe$columnagivennumber

Dear all,
i am stuck with a syntax problem.
i have a matrix which has about 500 rows and 6 columns.
now i want to kick some data out.
i want create a new matrix which is basically the old one except for all
entries which have a 4 in the 5 column AND a 1 in the 6th column.
i tried the following but couldn´t get a new matrix, just some wierd

How to shade part of a density plot
I'm trying to shade part of a density plot. The code I'm trying (using
the Old Faithful data as an example) is something like this:
# The Old Faithful geyser data
data(faithful)
d <- density(faithful$eruptions, bw = "sj")
plot(d)
polygon(d[d$x>4], col = "wheat")
I expected that the part of the curve to the right of 4 on the x axis
should be shaded, but nothing

odds ratio: how to create reference
HI there,
i know this is a basic question, though i need some help because this
is somewhat away from my current issue, but nevertheless interesting
to me... Lets assume i have some estimated probabilities, say
estimated by a logit model. i know i can also state them as an odds
ratio.
Now i?d like to state these odds ratios as a reference to a specific

run setwd at the launch of R
Dear all,
my R files (and the .csv files as well) are saved somewhere pretty
deep down my hard disk.
i have to chage to working directory therefore everytime i run R (i
run it on powerPC mac), which is disgusting.
using the setwd command at the beginning of an R script doesnt really
help because i have to find this file first by hand.
I am looking for possibility to run setwd during the
