Automatic detachment of dependent packages
Dear All,
When one loads certain packages, some other dependent packages are
loaded as well. Is there some way of detaching them automatically when
one detaches the first package loaded? For instance,
> library(sqldf)
Loading required package: RSQLite
Loading required package: DBI
Loading required package: gsubfn
Loading required package: proto
but
> detach(package:sqldf)

how to detach a library?
Dear R-users,
What command do I need to use to detach a library?
(without restart the R session).
Thanks,
Agus

attaching to position 1
If an attempt is made to attach to position 1, it appears to work
(not even a warning) but in fact it doesn't work as many would
expect. "search" thinks that it gets placed in position 2, but nothing
is actually there (according to "ls").
This is guaranteed to be confusing (and annoying) to people who
are used to attaching to position 1 in S-PLUS.

on lexical scoping....
The following *might* be of use to you. If you can predict what the various
function invocations will do, I think you have a reasonable grasp of how
lexical scoping works in R (contrary or supplementary opinions welcome).
It is the sort of thing you will find in the references also. If this is
all obvious, sorry for wasting your time.

R 2.8.0 qqnorm produces error with object of class zoo?
Dear list-reader,
by running the following script:
library(zoo)
sessionInfo()
search()
packageDescription("zoo")
data(EuStockMarkets)
dax <- as.zoo(EuStockMarkets[1:10, "DAX"])
daxr <- diff(log(dax))
identical(as.vector(qnorm(daxr)), qnorm(coredata(daxr)))
qqnorm(coredata(daxr))
qqnorm(daxr)
qqnorm() produces an error:

question about attaching data
Hi I just would like to know,
When I have a dataframe, like this one called 'dummy'
And I attach it.
Then I run my code.
I then update the dataframe by making changes and I still call it 'dummy'.
I run my code again.
Now dummy is at position 1 and position 2 of the search path and if I run the code again, with another version of 'dummy' it updates and eventually my search

Using .onUnload() to unload compiled code
If one wants to unload compiled code for a package containing a namespace, my understanding is that .onUnload() should be used, with a call to library.dynam.unload(). This is used in e.g., the stats and methods packages, but it appears to me that the compiled code is not being unloaded when the package is detached(). Am I misunderstanding something?
Best,
Jim

on lexical scoping....
obviously, everyone has different opinions on what's useful but I always
found this document quite
helpful. I think, in the past, someone said that there are some incorrect
statements in but I'm not sure
what they are.

attaching data.frame/list within a function
I'm trying to find a good way of attaching a list within a function such
that the attached variables (the list's members) precede the global
environment (.GlobalEnv) in the search list. Here is a non-working example
using attach(), which hopefully explains better what I'm trying to do:
> foo <- function(x=0, input=list(a=10)) {
+ attach(input)
+ on.exit(detach(input))

POSIXct Formating Error (PR#9819)
To Whom It May Concern:
The following appears to be a bug in the way POSIXct dates are formated.
The example is forced, but occurs naturally when importing Excel type dates
(where fractional part is fraction of a day) and small rounding errors
result.
As shown, looking at the POSIXct class, it looks as if both times are
16:11:03 (truncation)
Looking at as.numeric.POSIXct, it looks as if

Detaching "ctest"
Hi Everyone,
We have just upgraded to R-1.2.1, and I note, in contrast to R-1.1.1, that
ctest is now loaded automatically. The mechanism for this is to create a
.First function in base:
.First <- function() {
require("ctest", quietly=TRUE)
}
Now I don't want ctest, but I find that simply putting
if (length(grep("ctest", search())))
detach(package:ctest)

on lexical scoping....
It seems mostly correct. Here are a few quibbles:
- I don't think "owner" is a good description of the parent environment.
Usually when I use owner in computing, there's an implication that the
owner controls what it owns, is responsible for allocating and
destroying it, etc. Parent environments are targets of a pointer from
other environments that list them as their

Trying to understand the search path and namespaces
Hi all,
I'm trying to understand how the search path and namespaces interact.
For example, take the devtools package which suggests the testthat
package. Here's what the search path looks like after I load each of
those packages:

> search()

G'day all,
I believe that this is related to PR#1717 (filed under
not-reproducible) which was reported for a version of R that is a
quite a bit older than the ones used in for this report. But I
noticed this behaviour under R 2.1.1 and R 2.2.0 on my linux box and

segmentation fault with 1D array (PR#500)
Here's a nasty one. The following has caused a segmentation
fault and possibly also a bus error.
fred <- 1:6
dim(fred) <- 6
dimnames(fred) <- list(LETTERS[1:6])
mm <- matrix(1:12, 2, 6)
mm %*% fred # segmentation fault here
In the case without the dimnames assignment the result is OK.
Cheers, Jonathan.
