Adding text (coefts) to pairs panels
Hi,
First of all, thanks for the efforts of all the developers and contributors
- I'm very new to R and at the moment am just using it to create some
graphics, but it seems to be quite powerful.
I've googled the archives and wasn't able to find anyhting that dealt with
this problem, so would appreciate any suggestions/tips.
In a pairs plot I'd like to plot a linear regression line

Changing ComputerModern in postscript(...): A first attempt at contributing....
Hi
First off, thanks to all the various R developers, your package is very
impressive.
I'm not sure what the protocols are for contributing, and I've not done this
before, so please excuse nay obvious errors or oversights... Also I'm by no
means an R,TeX/LaTeX, or typesetting expert, I have largely stumbled my way
to this point.
Objective: I'd like to get R postscript(...) to

Check errors using R2.6.2
I can successfully "check" a package with source under 2.5.1, including
compiling source files and running examples with no errors or warnings.
when I try with R2.6.2, I get make errors:
making bayesmc.d from bayesmc.c
make[3]:gcc-sjlj: Command not found
etc.
my gcc is version 3.4.2
I'm using Windows XP.
Any thoughts?
thanks!

Factorial, L-moments, and overflows
Hi everyone,
In the package POT, there is a function that computes the L-moments of a given sample (samlmu). However, to compute those L-moments, one needs to obtain the total number of combinations between two numbers, which, by the way, requires the use of a factorial. See, for example, Hosking (1990 , p. 113).
How does the function "samlmu" in the package POT avoids overflows?

advice on crafting examples for packages
Folks-
I have developed a package which I am planning on posting to CRAN.
I include examples for each of the 40 or so functions in the package.
However, since the examples are non-trivial and the package is
using MCMC simulation methods, it takes about 20 minutes to run the complete
set of examples on a 2.8 Ghz windows PC. The R process reaches a high
water mark of about 100 MB of memory as

Problem with routing
Hi All
I have the following setup

Ipsec VPN
Allows 192.168.10.0/24 (Users) to connect to 192.168.20.0/24 (Network on
machine B)

Ipsen VPN
Allows 196.44.33.118 to coccent to 192.168.241.65 (machine C)
I want to rewrite 192.168.20.33 to 192.168.241.65

Is it possible to use a generic code stub in front of packages that use
optimx to improve optimx use or curtail it according to the requirements?

Alternative mail archives?
I have no solution. However I wonder why the mail archives at
https://www.stat.math.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/ are not searchable by
Google. That would perhaps be a solution otherwise, since you can restrict
Google to search within just one site. (This applies to some other search
engines too.)
Since I am also interested in the possibility to search the archive I have
just sent a question to

Connecting to database on statup
Hello,
Q/ Is it possible to create a DBMS connection automatically on startup of R? (Making sure of course that the db server has been started...)
I am running MySQL on Mac OS X 10.4.2 with R2.4.1.
I have tried to write a function using the RMySQL commands (below) and place them in .First of .RProfile:
drv <- dbDriver("MySQL")
dbcon <- dbConnect(drv, {other parameters present in

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the response. Apologies for the lack of detail... I have used
'boxwex', 'at' and ylim, to place things nicely, except I know have some
spare room at the end of the plot, which I would like to get rid of.... Your
suggestion to use 'add' per the example is one I had not thought of. Does
any one know of a simpler approach, to use add I'm need to

mapping states with colors
Hi folks,
I'm just learning how to use maps. As an initial foray, I'm mapping the
states that have "duty to retreat" (blue) and "stand your ground" (red)
self-defense standards. Here is my extremely naive script:
dtr <- c('alabama', 'arizona', 'conneticut', 'delaware', 'dist of columbia'
, 'hawaii',

describe scope
Hi,
Googling ''RSpec describe scope'' didn''t yield much, so apologies if
this question has been dealt with.
It seem well known that a ruby class is ''visible'' between describes,
and if this is a problem then you should use some counter as prefix or
suffix:
''class Item_001; ... end''
Is there any work underway, or sheduled release where

manipulating multiply imputed data sets
Hi folks,
I have five imputed data sets and would like to apply the same
recoding routines to each. I could do this sort of thing pretty
easily in Stata using MIM, but I've decided to go cold turkey on other
stats packages as a incentive for learning more about R. Most of the
recoding is for nominal variables, like race, religion, urbanicity,
and the like. So, for example, to recode race

stripping #s in a text file prior to reading into table or dataframe
I'm importing a lot of text tables of data (from Latent Gold) that includes
hashes in some of the column names ("Cluster#1", "Cluster#2", etc.). Is
there an easy way to strip the offending hashes out before pushing the text
into a table or data frame? I thought I'd use gsub, e.g., but can't figure
out how to read in a text file without reading it into a table or

Accurate area map projections
Hi,
Could any one point me to the projection, and parameters if necessary, that
would show each country/continent with it's area accurately refelcted on the
plot? E.g. aitoff vs. albers vs. bonne vs. cylequalearea vs. guyou - they
don't all look the same to mee but some of the documentations suggests they
are equal area? Of course this isn't my field, so I am largely guessing and

optimization with Sparse matrices
To whom it may concern,
I am trying to maximize a log-likelihood function using optim. This is a simple problem with only 18 parameters. To conserve memory, I am using sparse matrices (SLAM) for some of the data matrices used in the computation of the likelihood. However, optim appears to convert the sparse matrix back to regular data format. This causes me to run out of memory as R tries to

two newbie questions
# I've tried to make this easy to paste into R, though it's probably
so simple you won't need to.
# I have some data (there are many more variables, but this is a
reasonable approximation of it)

my.df <- data.frame(replicate(10, round(rnorm(100, mean=3.5, sd=1))))

some helpful tips on using RODBC
Hey everyone,
I don't have a question. Instead some helpful advice with things I've
learned from trying to connect 'R' to databases using RODBC.
ROBDC is a very handy tool that, once you have everything fixed up
nicely, is a great way to have scripts run fairly autonomously, safe in the
knowledge that data isn't accidentally messed up. But I was fairly ignorant
