Addendum to wishlist bug report #10931 (factanal) (PR#12754)

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

Hi,
on March 10 I filed a wishlist bug report asking for the inclusion of
some changes to factanal() and the associated print method. The changes
were originally proposed by John Fox in 2005; they make print.factanal()
display factor correlations if factanal() is called with rotation =

stuck with repeated values
R Gurus,I have a vector of nearly 90,000 characters from which I have to
extract the index of the characters which are repeated. So suppose if
x<-c("a","a","b","a","b","c","d") then my output would be a vector having
the index where the values are repeated i.e (1,2,3,4,5). I have been able to
isolate out the values that are

stopifnot() does not stop at first non-TRUE argument
>From an example in http://www.uni-muenster.de/ZIV.BennoSueselbeck/s-html/helpfiles/nargs.html , number of arguments in '...' can be obtained by
(function(...)nargs())(...) .
I now realize that sys.call() doesn't expand '...' when the function is called with '...'. It just returns the call as is. If 'stopifnot' uses sys.call() instead of match.call() , the

Undocumented 'use.names' argument to c()
In S-PLUS 3.4 help on 'c' (http://www.uni-muenster.de/ZIV.BennoSueselbeck/s-html/helpfiles/c.html), there is no 'use.names' argument.
Because 'c' is a generic function, I don't think that changing formal arguments is good.
In R devel r71344, 'use.names' is not an argument of functions 'c.Date', 'c.POSIXct' and 'c.difftime'.

new.frame()
Hello,
I would like to know whether R has a homogeneous function
of S-plus's new.frame(), which create explicit frames in
the evaluator and provide a locale for computations that
can be shared among various functions.
new.frame() in S-plus:

Thanks.

Need some hint on faster data manipulation.
Hi,
I am facing a problem in data manipulation. Suppose a data frame
contains two columns. The first column consists of some repeated characters
and the second consists of some numerical values. The problem is to extract
and create a new data frame consisting of rows of each unique character of
first column with minimum second column entry. For example if "d" is the

Undocumented 'use.names' argument to c()
I'd vote for it to stay. It could of course suprise someone who'd
expect c(list(a=1), b=2, use.names = FALSE) to generate list(a=1, b=2,
use.names=FALSE). On the upside, is the performance gain from using
use.names=FALSE. Below benchmarks show that the combining of the
names attributes themselves takes ~20-25 times longer than the
combining of the integers themselves. Also, at no

stopifnot() does not stop at first non-TRUE argument
While you are fiddling with stopifnot(), please consider changing the form
of the error thrown so that it includes the caller's call. The change
would be from something like
stop( <<the message>> )
to
stop(simpleError( <<the message>>, sys.call(-1)))
For the following code
f <- function(x, y) {
stopifnot(x > y)
x - y
}
g <- function(x,

Factor analysis with R
I am a user of R, but I don't read current R-mail's, because I use it
seldom. I should solve a factor analysis, but I don't find a proper R
function, like the function factanal in S-Plus. Does someone can tell
me, if there exist an R-analoge- function?
I I'am glad to here, if someone can help me
thanks Sigrid

factanal frustration!
Hi.
It seems that nearly every time I try to use factanal I get the following
response:
>faa2db1<-factanal(mretdb1,factors=2,method="mle",control=list(nstart=25))
Error in factanal(mretdb1, factors = 2, method = "mle", control =

Help with factanal and missing values
Hi list,
I'm performing a series of confirmatory factor analysis on different
groupings of items from data collected with questionnaires. There are some
missing values.
For those sets with no missing values I call
factanal(datamatrix,factors=n)
where datamatrix is a table of all observations for the items under
investigation.
This call fails when there are missing values.

factanal question
Dear R users:
I'm wondering if it's possible to get the residual correlation matrix when using factanal.
Since factanal assumes that the errors are normally distributed and independent (provided the factor model fits the data) this would be useful. Of course you would need to submit the data to the function to get the residuals (not just their correlation matrix), but it should be possible

factanal {mva} question
Hello!
I have a question about the factanal function.
This function returns at the end test statistics like this:
Test of the hypothesis that 4 factors are sufficient.
The chi square statistic is 4.63 on 2 degrees of freedom.
The p-value is 0.0988
Is it possible to get the chi square statistic and the p-value as variables,
not the text on the screen? An object of class "factanal"

Factor Analysis-factanal function
Dear friends,
I'm using R to produce the following Factor Analysis:
> matriz.cor<-hetcor(matrix(as.factor(data), ncol=variables,
byrow=T))$correlations
> factanal(x=data, factors=2, covmat=matriz.cor, scores='regression')
Then the screen output shows the following message:

Passing Command to Optim in factanal
Hi,
I am currently trying to execute the following command:
f<-factanal(factors=k$Components$nparallel,covmat=m,n.obs=2287,rotation="varimax",control=list(opt=list(method=c("BFGS"))))
but keep getting the error: L-BFGS-B needs finite values of 'fn'
I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here, why isn't optim being told to use BFGS instead of L-BFGS-B...

factanal AIC?
Dear list members,
Could any expert on factor analysis be so kind to explain how to calculate AIC on the output of factanal. Do I calculate AIC wrong or is factanal$criteria["objective"] not a negative log-likelihood?
Best regards
Jens Oehlschl?gel
The AIC calculated using summary.factanal below don't appear correct to me:
n items factors total.df rest.df model.df

How-To construct a cov list to use a covariance matrix in factanal?
Hi,
I have a set of covariance matrices but not the original data. I want to carry out some exploratory factor analysis. So, I am trying to construct a covariance matrix list as the input for factanal. I can construct a list which includes the cov, the centers, and the n.obs. But it doesn't work. I get an error that says "Error in sqrt(diag(cv)) : Non-numeric argument to mathematical

how to get residuals in factanal
In R factanal output, I can't find a function to give me residuals e.
I mannually got it by using x -lamda1*f1 -lamda2*f2 - ... -lamdan*fn, but the e
I got are not uncorrelated with all the f's.
What did I do wrong? Please help.
