postscript bounding box in trellis/lattice plot is wrong ?
Hi, a problem involving postscript bounding boxes:
I'm composing three scatterplots into a single figure,
postsript for publication.
The individual scatterplots should be square, so
the overall figure should have a roughly 1:3 sort of
aspect ratio.
By default however, the overall figure comes out
nearly square,
and the scatterplots are stretched vertically.
I fixed this by adding

Loop trouble with Excel Serial Numbers!
Hi All!
I'm trying to convert serial numbers in Excel to dates in R. For each
single "thedate" entry, I get a correct answer. But if I try using the for
loop, I get bizarre numbers in "mynewdata".
thedate<-as.matrix(40548:40759,ncol=1)
exdate<-function(){
mynewdate<-NULL

RODBC & POSIX & Daylight Saving blues
Dear All,
The recent improvement in RODBC to recognize datetimes in tables has
exposed my ongoing confusion.
All my data are obtained from a satellite system (Argos) which tags events
in the GMT time zone. Daylight saving is ignored. To my way of thinking
this means that
1. twelve-o-clock means halfway through the day regardless of season, and
2. the difftime of any two dates where

bounding box in PostScript
When a graph is saved as PostScript, the bounding box is often too big.
A consequence is that when the graph is included in a LaTeX document,
the spacing does not look good.
Is this a recognized problem? Is someone working on it? Could I help?

Problem with figure size when embedding fonts
Dear Colleagues:
I need to make a graphic that uses the Nimbus rather than Helvetica font
family so that the font can be embedded in the encapsulated postscript
file. This is to satisfy a requirement from a journal for electronic
submission of figures. I do the following:
postscript('lowess.eps', onefile=FALSE, pointsize=18, horizontal=FALSE,
family='NimbusSan')

rgl persp3d bounding box color problem.
Hi guys,
I hit on a problem when I use rgl.
Could you try to run the code here in this link and see why the first persp3d gives a red bounding box and the second shows black?

(sorry for not pasting the code here directly but my previous email got filtered by this list so I suspect my code looks like spam to the spam filter)

Changing the size of the bounding box
Greetings all:
I have to create a graph that has very specific dimensions for
publication purposes. The graph is a semilog scaled graph and the
axes must range from 1 to 1,000,000 on the y axis and 0 to 100 on the
x axis. The x axis should be exactly 8 inches and the y axis should
be exactly 5.25 inches. I've been able to set the plot area to 8 x
5.25 using the par(pin=c(8,5.25)). The

Bounding Box in pdf files
This is probably a faq but I have not been able to find a solution.
I create a pdf file in R but latex complains that it can't find the bounding
box. Here is an example:

> dev.off()

dev.copy2eps: position of figure on page
The definition for dev.copy2eps contains the following line:
oc$paper <- "special"
The result of this is that the output will be placed in the left
bottom corner of the page. Even though dev.copy2eps is meant for
creating files that are to be included into other documents, you
might want to print the figure directly, just to see how it will
look on paper. (Of course, this will

how to create analog stripchart plots of x vs t (t=mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss)
Hello r-experts,
I sure could us a little help.
I have an ever updating text file with timestamped data in it. I can
reformat in anyway I want if need be but currently I have chosen to make
columns of date, time and measuresed value (comma delimeted and with the
dates and times in quotes to interpret them as strings).
Here is a small section of my text data file:

Bounding ellipse for any set of points
After a lot of effort I developed the following function to compute the
bounding ellipse (also known a as minimum volume enclosing ellipsoid) for
any set of points. This script is limited to two dimensions, but I believe
with minor modification the algorithm should work for 3 or more dimensions.
It seems to work well (although I don't know if can be optimized to run
faster) and

Layout within levelplot from the lattice package
Hi,
I'm a novice with levelplot and need some assistance! Basically, I want a window
which contains 6 levelplots of equal size presented in 3 columns and 2 rows.
I've tried to approach it two ways. The first way leads to this question:
Is there any way to concatenate levelplots from a factor vertically as opposed
to horizontally? I'd like to pair the levelplots by factor.2 on

seeing an S4 method, not using it
Dear list,
here is a problem I met when trying to use a method for an S4 object,
without loading the package in which the method was defined. I do not
know if this is a bug, or a mistake of mine. Normally, I think the
package in which the appropriate method is defined is loaded
automatically when calling the method. The problem is that if the
package is indeed loaded automatically, the

millisecond precision over internet
Hi,
I''m new to programming and ruby and ROR, but I''m hoping to learn ruby to
create custom scientific software.
Mainly it involves measuring people''s reaction time to a series of
words.
I''m positive that this is possible using plain ruby on a computer (cause
this is BASIC territory right?). But I want to create a ROR app that can
do the same thing. My

I had the exact same problem. The only workaround is to get that folder renamed to DOS compatible characters, let comskip run through Wine, and then change the name back again. I had to change the

random location in polygons sp spsample splancs csr
Dear all,
I had to place points at random, one in each of larger number of
polygons (actually in objects of class 'SpatialPolygonsDataFrame' , see
sp library), and tried first to do it using spsample (from sp).
Surprisingly, every 5-15 trials, the output was a NULL value. The doc
says that ' this may occur when trying to hit a small and awkwardly
shaped polygon in a large
