How to do a "proc summary" in R?
Hi, I'm a SAS user trying to convert myself to R but I still have problems with some pretty simple commands. First I wanted to add up a number of red-tailed hawks seen per day (julian day) per year. So I tried: RTyrday <- tapply(RThr,list(year,julian),sum) And then I tried the following regression: mod1 <- glm(RTyrday~julian+year, family=gaussian (link=identity),data=RT) Wich

changing font size in plot(effect())
I can't seem to be able to change the font size in an effect display. I've tried the following: > par(cex.lab=4) > plot(effect ("alti",reg8), ylab="detection probability") and > plot(effect ("alti",reg8), ylab="detection probability", cex=4) but nothing changes. Can anyone help me? thanks. Emilie Berthiaume graduate student

function effect and standard error
Hi list! I did the following regression: reg1 <- glm(alti~sp + ovent + vivent + nuage, family=gaussian, data=meteo1) I was interested in knowing the effect of the species (sp) in reg1 and so I used the function «effect»: effect.sp <- effect ("sp", reg1, se=TRUE) with this output: sp AK BW NH OS RT SS 2.730101 2.885363 2.753774 2.750311

function by
Hi, I'm just getting started with R and I'm having problems with some simple operations: I want to get the the sum of the column "SStot" for each year using the function by. The data set is named "SS". I've tried this: by (SS, year, sum(SStot)) and it's not working. Is it because there's a different number of rows for each year? How else can I do

MASS fitdistr with plyr or data.table?
I am trying to extract the shape and scale parameters of a wind speed distribution for different sites. I can do this in a clunky way, but I was hoping to find a way using data.table or plyr. However, when I try I am met with the following: set.seed(144) weib.dist<-rweibull(10000,shape=3,scale=8) weib.test<-data.table(cbind(1:10,weib.dist))

Ploting different values with different colors
Hello I am trying to plot a 20 x 20 grid of points with the colors of each point refering to percent cover of that specific point So basically the point are all the same size and their position on the graph is base on their coordinates (x,y). I want the color (a grey scale from white=0 to black =100) to represent the values of each of these point (cover) Here is what my data looks like

MASS fitdistr call in plyr help!
I have a set of wind speeds read at different locations. The data is a data frame with two columns: site and wind speed. I want to split the data on site and call a function to find the shape and scale parameters of a weibull distribution fit. The end result is a plot with x-axis = shape and y-axis = scale. Currently my code looks like: fit_wind_speed<-function(x){

Plot problem !
Hello, Is there a simple way to make a plot with xy coordinates and a z value which determines the size and the color of point on the plot? Thanks for your help ! Problems with subset, droplevels and lm: variable lengths differ
[Env: R 2.14.2 / Win Xp] In the script below, I want to select some variables from rrcov::OsloTransect, delete cases with any missing data, and subset the data frame Oslo to remove cases for two levels of the factor litho that occur with low frequency. The checks I run on my new data frame Oslo look OK, but I when I try to fit a multivariate linear model with lm(), I am getting an error:

Patch for water plugin to make time between rain-drops adjustable
Hello, I love the work that is being done with compiz! I have made a patch for water.c that makes the time between rain-drops adjustable using gconf. This way you can leave the plug-in running and just have pleasant drops every now and then instead of the rainstorm that is hard-coded in now (which is still fun now and then!). The gconf value is in ms (1/1000 of a second). Suggestions for

questions about "metafor" package
Hello,   I would like to do a meta-analysis with the package « metafor ». Ideally I would like to use a mixed model because I’m interested to see the effect of some moderators. But the data set I managed to collect from literature presents two limits.   -         Firstly, for each observation, I have means for a treatment and for a control, but I don’t always have corresponding standard

aggregating using 'with' function
Hi All, I am interested in aggregating a data frame based on 2 categories--mean effect size (r) for each 'id's' 'mod1'. The 'with' function works well when aggregating on one category (e.g., based on 'id' below) but doesnt work if I try 2 categories. How can this be accomplished? # sample data id<-c(1,1,1,rep(4:12)) n<-c(10,20,13,22,28,12,12,36,19,12,

Data.frame manipulation
Hi All, I'm conducting a meta-analysis and have taken a data.frame with multiple rows per study (for each effect size) and performed a weighted average of effect size for each study. This results in a reduced # of rows. I am particularly interested in simply reducing the additional variables in the data.frame to the first row of the corresponding id variable. For example:

initial value for optim in polr question
Hi, I have a problem with initial value for optim in polr that R report. After a call to polr, it complains that: Error in optim(start, fmin, gmin, method="BFGS", hessian= Hess, ...) : initial value in 'vmin' is not finite. Would you please suggest a way round to this problem? Thank you so much in advance. Rgds, - adschai

Simulation from a model fitted by survreg.
Dear list, I would like to simulate individual survival times from a model that has been fitted using the survreg procedure (library survival). Output shown below. My plan is to extract the shape and scale arguments for use with rweibull() since my error terms are assumed to be Weibull, but it does not make any sense. The mean survival time is easy to predict, but I would like to simulate

creating functions question
Hi All, I am interested in creating a function that will take x number of lm objects and automate the comparison of each model (using anova). Here is a simple example (the actual function will involve more than what Im presenting but is irrelevant for the example): # sample data: id<-rep(1:20) n<-c(10,20,13,22,28,12,12,36,19,12,36,75,33,121,37,14,40,16,14,20)
