R GUI considerations (was: R, Wine, and multi-threadedness)
Hello,
Following a discussion initiated on r-devel, that mentions SciViews-R
and other GUIs issues for R, I would like to make comments (and would be
happy if these comments would initiate interesting initiatives).
A big, big problem with SciViews-R is that a part of it is written in
Visual Basic 6, a M$$$$ language, not supported any more, buggy, non
transposable to other platforms, etc,

[R-SIG-Mac] Starting tcltk without Tk
It turns out that the behavior of starting just Tcl was actually a
bug. Apparently the intention was to attempt to start Tk regardless of
the DISPLAY variable, because some TclTk implementation such as Aqua
Tcl/Tk don't require DISPLAY and thus would not be loaded. Due to a
bug (HAVE_AQUA was not included in Rconfig.h before R 2.7.0), though,
this was not the case. I'll leave it

Change in the Tcl/Tk loading in R 2.7.0 (under Unix/Mac OS X)?
Hello,
Up to R 2.6.2, I used to start Tcl *without Tk* (I need only Tcl for
some part of my work, like a socket server written in Tcl only, for
instance) with this code under Mac OS X (particularly on this system,
because I don't want to start X11 just to use Tcl code, which is
required for Tk!):
> Sys.unsetenv("DISPLAY")
> library(tcltk)
I got then the message

: Update on R GUI's ??
Awhile back there was a lengthy discussion regarding R GUI's for
teaching, etc. I was wondering if anyone has set up the web page which
was to be dedicated to this issue. Philippe Grosjean had the idea of
creating a R-GUI projects page. Also, is anyone using a "R-GUI" (for
windows) for teaching basic statistics to students doing applied science
degrees? Something based perhaps

need gui matrix editor: does R Core team have advice on how?
Dear R-devel:
Would R core team consider endorsing a graphical toolkit and trying to
facilitate development of little GUI tools?
I need a gui matrix editor for users that want to be able to write
matrices that are later used to simulate data. Instead of teaching
them to write a covariance matrix (for example, for mvtnorm), I want
to tell them run a function that pops up a table they can fill

tcl/tk return problem
Hello,
I'm very new in working with tcl/tk in R and have a problem which will
probably
sound silly to most of you.
Here is the code I have problems with:
readcelfiles <- function()
{
require(tcltk)
tt <- tktoplevel()
tkgrid(tklabel(tt,text="Choose a directory!"))
OnOK <- function()
{
fileDir<-tclvalue(tkchooseDirectory())

tk non-widget commands (esp. update and winfo)
Hi,
I've been playing with the tcltk package. It's very nice to have
access to buttons, menus etc. now. Thank you!
Alas, I also have questions: In Tcl everything is a string [*]. This
is not the case in R, of course. So why are return values of tk
commands still strings? (Is there any other reason than speed or
"package is work in progress"?)
Example:
> tt <-

loading packages - mac user
Hi,
I'm using a Mac, I've downloaded R (base), and I'm trying to download
the package R Commander. I thought I had already done this (both from
the web and from within R) but it doesn't seem to be working - it's
not there as a "search()" reveals. However, there are plenty of files
on my system linked with Rcmdr - located in

another tcl/tk query
Greetings:
I wish to use a tcl/tk widget to ask for user-selected parameter values. My
widget works ? it asks for and returns to my workspace the stuff I need.
Here is a snippet of my code:
###############################
OnOK <- function()
{
LOG.X <<- as.logical(as.character(tclvalue(log.X.buttonValue)))
LOG.Y <<- as.logical(as.character(tclvalue(log.Y.buttonValue)))

Two tcltk questions and Re: tcltk package functionality
Sorry, for my mail from last night contains no subject.
Therefore, I send it again and two tcltk questions are appended.

use of the tcltk package crashes R 4.0.1 for Windows
John,
The Windows installation instructions document has the following. So, one obvious question is whether you did select it. (I haven't installed on WIndows for ages, so I don't know whether this was changed recently or even whether the selection is on or off by default).

tk problem with R 2.2.0 on wine/linux
Actually I am trying to run sciview-R and encounted some problems with
tk, and I thought I'll check the basic library(tcltk) functionallity,
just to be sure. Anybody seen that '[tcl] bad window path name ".1".'
message before?
Prof. Philippe Grosjean: yes, I have managed to load most of
sciview-R under Wine, except the tcltk library!

R Tcl/Tk: How to put widgets in text widget?
Dear all,
please excuse the somewhat special question:
>From within R I create a Tk windows with a list of checkboxes, which can
bekome too long for the screen. The obvious solution would be to put all
checkboxes into a frame and make that scrollable. Alas, there are (for
whatever reason!) no scrollable frames in Tk :-(
The usual workaround is to put widgets (my checkboxes) into a textbox,

Using Java or Tcl/Tk in R
Dear R People:
This is more of an opinion question please:
When putting together GUI type functions, is
it better to use JAVA or Tcl/Tk, please?
Any input is appreciated!

Getting width of Tk text widget via tcltk
Dear list members,
Is it possible via a suitable tcltk command to get the *current* width, in
characters, of a Tk text widget that has been resized with the mouse? In the
following code, the reported width of the text widget doesn't change, even
though it has been resized. I can, however, get the current width in pixels:

Pasting into Tk table widget?
I'm working on a matrix editor using the Tk table widget, and it is almost
done. It slices, dices, etc., and it can paste into Excel from an R session
running on Linux. What I don't know how to do is paste from Excel into a Tk
table, and Google is not helping me. Can anyone lend me a clue?

Installing a Tcl/Tk Extension on OSX
Dear R-Community,
I need the Img tk extension for my R package. It all works on my Ubuntu
machine (libtk-img). However I experience a great deal of trouble when I
try to install the package on OSX 10.5 or 10.6 (in fact I'm not able to
do it).
As I understand it, the ActiveTcl with it's teacup package manager do
not have an effect on the the x11 tcl installation which R accesses.

[PATCH] remove a duplicate tk function definition (and alphabetize)
'tkcoords' is defined twice (in the same way) in src/library/tcltk/R/Tk.R.
Attached is a patch against r63780 that removes the duplicate
definition and alphabetizes the functions.
I've read that minor patches such as this should be sent to r-devel [1].
