Installing R with debian
Dear All,
I am trying to install R using debian's apt-get system. When I do 'apt-get install r-base', it appears to install everything correctly. However, when I start up R I get the error message:

Installing Damn Small Linux and R
Installing Damn Small Linux and R
Following my experiences with Knoppix (described in
another mail) I did similar test on Damn Small Linux
(dsl -http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ ). DSL was
interesting, because it is the smallest yet fully
functional version of Linux, hence more suited to
older and smaller computers than Knoppix. Importantly,
it uses lightweight windowing system (no KDE or GNOME)

Knoppix won't let me write to emergency drive
I appear to have lost the whole of my home directory on my centos
server (which includes all my mail saved from the last 7 years).
Although I have recent backups of most data I would like to copy
important files from /etc, and, if possible, /var/logs so that I can
try to find out what went wrong. However, knoppix refuses to let me
write to either my usb hdd or usb pendrive. Does anyone know how

Install R in Linux
Hi, Is it possible to install R in a linux box (Debian) without being a root. I know I can compile the R source code, but there is no F77 compiler on the box. So is it possible to install binary R without being a root?

R for various ports of linux
To all:
I currently download the R binaries for Redhat 7.x Linux.
There is considerable turmoil in the vendors of Linux. Redhat
apparently is changing it's business model to paid versions.
This might motivate my department to use a different vendor of Linux.
Is there anything predictable about which vendors/versions of Linux
will have R binaries in the future?
Thanks,
Nathan

installing mgcv (Knoppix/Debian unstable)
Just in case anyone cares or is hitting the same problem:
to install current mgcv (1.0-5) on 1.9.0 on Knoppix/Debian unstable I had
to:
# cd /usr/lib
# ln -s /usr/lib/atlas/libblas.so.3 libblas-3.so
# ln -s /usr/lib/atlas/liblapack.so.3 liblapack-3.so
Otherwise compilation couldn't find -lblas-3 or -llapack-3
(I could have gotten away with the links in /usr/lib/atlas instead of

Installing R on Xandros 3.0
Dear List,
After obtaining a second-hand PC and because XP costs too much, I installed Xandros 3.0 (based on Debian) but pretty easy to use if migrating from WinXP.
Does anyone know how to install R on this OS?
Thank you for your time,
Tom Volscho

Golly, anyone who read Plato's Dialogues would realize that the Socratic
method involves patiently leading the questioner stepwise through the
solution, not simply writing RTFMeno.

compact flash, fat, reduced knoppix and syslinux
Hi.
I've recently picked up a 256MB compact flash card and
CF->IDE adapter.
I'm wanting to put a smaller version of knoppix on
here. I came across miniknoppix here:
http://www.inittab.org and decided to have a play
around with that.
So far I have opened up the ISO image and copied all
the files out. I have put a boot sector onto the CF
by putting the CF into the IDER adpater then

Portable R?
Hello list,
A short time ago, I found
http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/portable_apps_suite/, which
contains basically a complete set of office tools that can be run
*entirely* from a USB key. The concept is:
- find a Windows PC
- put in your USB key
- run OpenOffice, Firefox, Gaim, Nvu, Thunderbird, ... directly from
your USB key, with no app installation required
- save your files wherever

Mandrake 10.1
Dear all,
I am trying to install the R-2.0.0-1mdk.i586.rpm
<http://cran.planetmirror.com/bin/linux/mandrake/10.0/R-2.0.0-1mdk.i586.rpm>
file on mandrake 10.1. Since the file is, originally, meant for
Mandrake 10.0, it is not surprising me that the installation does not work.
The error message that I get can be translated in something like:
"impossible to install since the info

New Quantian releases with almost all of CRAN / BioC
[ I hope this is not considered off-topic for the list:
A new Quantian release was just announced, and it contains even more R.
As before, we have R (now 2.2.1), ESS, Ggobi, Rpy, several BioInfo tools
-- but now we also have RSPerl, JGR, rJava and more. A full sync to CRAN
and BioC as of Feb 25, 2006 now yields dim(installed.packages())[1]
of 877. Feedback welcome, but
