par(mfror=c(1,2))
dear list,
i have a problem using the par function.
in one graphic device i want to have two plots so i tried to use
par(mfror=c(1,2)).
of course it worked out, but the height now is twice the length of the width
for each single plot.
what i actually wanted is something like par(mfrow=c(2,2)) where only the
top (or bottom)
two plots are drawn with entire length proportions of 1 to 2 ( height 1,

substituting values
dear list,
i have a matrix with missing values like
1 2 3 4 x
x 2 2 2 2
2 2 2 x 2
the x stands for the missing value.
i have to substitute it to NA
substitute or replace didn´t work out, as they are for vectors only
however matrix[,i] also didn´t work.
can anybody tell me, who i can change these values easily?
thanks stefan

Count data in random Forest
Hello R-user!
I am running R 2.7.0 on a Power Book (Tiger). (I am still R and
statistics beginner)
I try to find the most important variables to divide my dataset as
given in a categorical variable using randomForest.
Is randomForest() able to deal with count data?
Or is there no difference because only the ranks are used in the trees?
Thanks in advance

I tried rfImpute (randomForest) and as far as I understood should it

metaMDS using Dissimilarity matrix
Hello R-user community!
I am running R 2.7.0 on a Power Book (Tiger). (I am still R and
statistics beginner)
Presently I try to run the function metaMDS (vegan) using an existing
dissimilarity-matrix.
As I would like to start with this matrix I thought I could just give
the matrix using the x= -argument
Test<-metaMDS(x=Dist.Gower)

mips64el stat/time/…? problem
Hi Ben,

sorry for the delay. I was able to test this on eller today.
To reproduce the issue, this was needed, because the value
read was a nanosecond field and so the test didn?t always fail:
(sid_mips64el-dchroot)tg at eller:~$ while sleep 0.1; do :>b; ./mksh -c 'test a -nt

Manipulating rownames for nMDS
I am trying to plot an nMDS plot using ggplot2. My rownames are coded so
that they can be broken down by Site, Species, Treatment, or Replicate based
on unique separators. There are no column headers. I am having trouble
coding ggplot2 to plot by Site -or- Species -or- Treatment and NOT by all
unique row names. This is probably a simple question but I'm still very new

boxplot notch
Thanks Ben,
Here the reproducible example.
It works without notch=TRUE, but provides an error with notch=TURE
Error in `geom_boxplot()`:
! Problem while converting geom to grob.
? Error occurred in the 1st layer.
Caused by error in `ans[ypos] <- rep(yes, length.out = len)[ypos]`:

I don't see anything obviously wrong here. There may be something
subtle, but we probably won't be able to help without a reproducible
example ...

applying summary() to an object created with ols()
Hello R-list,
I am trying to calculate a ridge regression using first the *lm.ridge()*
function from the MASS package and then applying the obtained Hoerl

function provided by Frank Harrell in his Design package.
It looks like this:

That's not really a reprex Sibylle.? I did try to use it to see if I
could work out what you were trying to do and help but there is so much
in there that I suspect is distraction from the notch issue and its
error message.
Please can you give us something stripped of all unecessary things and
tell us what you want?
Something like data that we can read as a tribble() or from a dput() of
