Setting working directory interactively within a function
Is there anyway to have a function prompt the user for a working directory, equivalent to file.choose()? --Paul

plot legend outside the grid
Thanks Bert for all the help. I got the legend figured out Friday but left early becoz of long weekend so didn't get a chance to reply.. I modified the plot margins a little bit and Here's what I finally had... par(mar=c(c(10, 6, 6, 10) + 0.1)); par(xpd=FALSE); with (dataFrame, stripchart(marbles_buried ~ genotype, method="jitter", vertical=TRUE, col = c('blue',

I managed to get everything to look and feel the way I want except for the legend to plot outside the grid... Thanks for the note on the par, but I'm not able to it to plot outside the plot grid.. dataFrame <-

Looking for transformation to overcome heterogeneity ofvariances
Peter You question is difficult to answer without more information about the distribution of your residuals. Different residual patterns call for different transformations to stabilize the variance. One very common form of heterocedasticity is increasing variance with increasing values of an independent predictor, i.e. the variance of the residuals of y=x increase as x increases. In this case a

periodic spline in glm
I have been trying to find a command similiar to bs or ns to add a periodic/or cyclical splie term to a regression model in glm.nb I have been using ns to fit a spline to day of the year (1:365): glm.nb(CNT ~ WKDY + ns(DY,df=6) + HOLIDAY_FLAG + Trend) but I think a periodic spline might be more appropriate. Any suggestions would be appreciated. best, Spencer Jones, M.Stat. NLM Fellow Dept.

I guess the histogram is as you wrote. See http://web.maths.unsw.edu.au/~tduong/seminars/intro2kde/ for a short explanation. > -----Original Message----- > From: Berton Gunter

Displaying a distribution -- was: Combining two histograms
I am immediately reminded of something I read which goes "A sufficiently trained statistician can read the vagaries of a Q-Q plot like a sharman can read a chicken's entrails, with a similar recourse to scientific principles. Interpreting Q-Q plots is more a visceral than an intellectual exercise. The uninitiated are often mystified by the process. Experience is the key here."

How to a handle an error in a loop [Broadcast]
This ought to work: resultdt <- lapply(PGWide[, 240:389], function(x, ...) try(tdt(x, ...))) You can then check the class of each component to see which one failed. Numerical Derivative / Numerical Differentiation of unkno wn funct ion
Ah... I searched for half an hour for this function... you know, the help function in R could really be a lot better... But wait a minute... looking at this, it appears you have to pass in an expression. What if it is an unknown function, where you only have a handle to the function, but you cannot see it's implementation ? Will this work then ? -----Original Message----- From: Berton Gunter

RE: Lattice update error (PR#7423)
OK. Sorry to have bothered you. It may well have been the namespace issue, a subtlety that I would have been unaware of. Thanks. I've cc'ed this to r-bugs in case there is anything they wish to do about it. -- Bert Gunter > -----Original Message----- > From: Deepayan Sarkar [mailto:deepayan@stat.wisc.edu] > Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 2004 12:05 PM > To: Berton Gunter

Samba and DOS
Greetings, Is there any way to get Samba to interact with MS-DOS? I am attempting to turn a Linux box into a VPN router for DOS clients. What I need to know is, can I get a CIFS protocol stack for MS-DOS, is a TCP/IP stack sufficient, are there any other solutions anyone knows about? Thank You. max.col specification
I'm not sure I understand the max.col spec or its rationale. In particular: * What is the significance and effect of "assuming that the entries are probabilities", as they do not seem to be limited to the interval [0,1]? * In what contexts is it useful for max.col to consider numbers within a certain tolerance equal? * Why is a fixed relative tolerance of 1e-5 useful? That seems

Reconfiguring wide frame to long frame
Greetings, fellow R'ers. How can I get this frame in R: ID meas ID.1 meas.1 1 1.1 3 1.2 2 2.1 4 2.2 to look like this (stacking): ID meas 1 1.1 2 2.1 3 1.2 4 2.2 It's not really the reshape function (or is it?) because we can consider the additional columns, viz., ID.1 and meas.1, as independent of ID and meas so it is basically a stacking

GUI File>Load workspace "bug" in Windows (PR#7710)
Full_Name: Bert Gunter Version: 2.0.1 OS: Windows XP Submission from: (NULL) (192.12.78.250) Not sure this is a bug, but .. When the working directory is changed via setwd() and then the file>Load workspace menu is immediately accessed, the working directory that is opened is still the one set before the setwd() call. It only THEN resets the GUI to the correct current working directory.
