RODBC to import/export xls files
Dear R users,
I've learned today about RODBC package in order to import xls file to
dataframes and export the dataframes to xls files.
However I have some problems. Please excuse me if these are basic but as
I said, I've just begun with this package.
Also this email is quite long, but everything is related, so I don't
think it would be better to split it. Moreover, there's a

Problem with RODBC
I have been trying to read some data from an Excel workbook without
success. The workbook is in .xls format and has multiple sheets, one
with the sheet name Data, which is the sheet I wish to read from. One
complication is that the header row of this sheet is comprised of
dropdown boxes.
I tried what I normally would do plus some variations. Here is the output.

RODBC problem
Hello,
I use a RODBC connection to a MySQL server on a Debian machine. The call to odbcConnect() seems to be ok, but the result of the first sqlFetch(channel,"t_studie") retrieves this data frame:

Excel *.xls files, RODBC
I gather from reading the back-issues of r-help that it should be
possible (modulo a number of caveats) to read an excel (yuck!) file
into R using RODBC. I have obtained and installed ODBC and the RODBC
package, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about
it. Can anyone give me a simple recipe?
I have an excel file on cdrom, say:

Re ading Excel 5.0 files with RODBC?
Hi,
i'm trying to read some data from excel files but it seems that neither
xlsReadWrite nor sqlFetch (RODBC) doesn't like the format (Excel 5.0).
When i open the file in Excel and save it in a new format Excel 97 -2003
everything works fine.
Is it possible to use ODBC connection to open old format files, or i guess i
will have to open and save every file in Excel in new format, which

RODBC access to MS-Excel (PR#4266)
Full_Name: Michael Hecht
Version: 1.7.1
OS: WinNT
Submission from: (NULL) (193.158.76.205)
I've got a problem with the RODBC library while trying to access to an MS-Excel
file. The Excel file was originally exportet by a commercial software, so I
cannot influence it. The problem is, that the names of the tables include
spaces, e.g. "Scan 1","Scan 2" etc. If I use RODBC, I

sqlFetch (RODBC) question
Dear all,
I've used RODBC a lot to read in files created in MS excel and access but
found a strange problem today: a variable in my data file contained both
numbers and text; sqlFetch would set text within a row of numbers to NA; but
if first 5 or 6 rows would be text then all numbers would be read in as NA.

RODBC question: problem importing series with blank cells
Hello,
I have an excel file that I load through RODBC. Some of my columns are
blank. They are equity time series and the stocks did not exist at the
earlier dates. My problem is that the whole column becomes <NA> even though
there are numbers at later dates.

I can't find solutions for. I'm using Windows XP.
1) R 1.9 continues to read my .Rprofile file in my

Specifying data type when creating a dataframe using RODBC
H R-helpers,
I am using the following code to make a dataframe from an Excel spreadsheet:
library(RODBC)
channel <- odbcConnectExcel("Spreadsheet.xls")
Data <- sqlFetch(channel, "Tab1")
odbcClose(channel)
One column (several, actually) in the spreadsheet contains integers in
its first few rows but later values in these columns contain a mixture
of numbers, letters and
