Parallel compression support for saving to rds/rdata files?
Hi, I have tried to follow the instructions in the ``save`` documentation and it doesn't seem to work (see below): mydata <- do.call(rbind, rep(iris, 10000)) con <- pipe("pigz -p8 > fname.gz", "wb"); save(mydata, file = con); close(con) # This runs R.utils::gunzip("fname.gz", "fname.RData", overwrite = TRUE) load("fname.RData") #

load file RData which store in zip file
Dear R users, My situation: (1) I have limited workspace for my work harddisk (about 10 GiB). (2) I have a lot of data files in R workspace (*.RData) which most of them > 200 MiB. For some reason I zip some of them, for instance "filename.RData (250 MiB)" to "filename.zip (3MiB)". In this work I have a lot of more space of my harddisk. Normally, If I want to use

problem with an old .RData file
Dear useRs, Today I've encountered a weird unexpected behaviour. It is not a real problem for me and I can workaround it. But I'm very curious of what could have caused it. Starting an R session in a directory with an old .RData my first command was > library(MASS) and i got Errore in .Call("R_lazyLoadDBfetch", key, file, compressed, hook, PACKAGE = "base") : C

How "else" works
I have what is likely to be a simple question about the else keyword. The usage in the help pages is as follows: if(cond) cons.expr else alt.expr I would expect to be able to use it in the following way as well: if(cond){ cons.expr } else alt.expr This results a syntax error. Am I doing something wrong, or doesn't R support the spanning of the combination of if and else

hotuser and hotkernel
G''Day Folks, While I have a few minutes online (which is rare at the moment - travel), let me post about a couple of new scripts. I''ve just uploaded them to http://www.brendangregg.com/dtrace.html. They are to profile user-level functions and libaries; and kernel-level functions and modules. They sample, rather than trace (which can be both good and bad). Here is hotuser

Can't unzip package
I just upgraded to Solaris 8, and downloaded the the following binary package from www.samba.org <http://www.samba.org> : samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz When trying to gunzip it, here is my output: /home/ccampbell # gunzip samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz gunzip: samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz: not in gzip format /home/ccampbell # file samba-2.2.7-sol8-suncc-64bit.pkg.gz

Use of Apply to Change Values in Dataframe
I have a question about how apply() works for changing data values. I am using it to change NA values to zero, but the question applies to other value changing operations as well. If I have a dataframe "Dat" with columns "a", "b" and "c" and there are some NA values in every column: If I do: Dat$a[is.na(Dat$a)] <- 0 then all the NA values are changed

Converting Character Strings into Object Names
Is there a function to convert character strings to object references. For example, I want to name sets of objects based on scenarios and the types of data being stored. So the scenarios might be something like c("a", "b", "c"), the types of data might have names like c("pass.trp", "trk.trp", "cmute.trp"), and I want to assign data to

Error with 1.9.0 - winMenuAdd not usable in .Rprofile
I had this problem too. The documentation for the winMenus says that these functions are part of the utils package. R must be loading this library after it sources in Rprofile. If you add library(utils) to the beginning of your .First function, it should take care of the problem. Brian Gregor, P.E. Corrupt .RData
I'm using R 1.3.1 on a Windows NT 4.0 machine. As you might guess my machine crashes on me from time to time :-| So far, forcing a reboot via the Taskmanager has worked reasonably well: any open R session would enquire politely whether to save, and do so if requested. This time, it has not worked out. I get a 'Fatal Error: unable to restore saved data in .RData' message and R

How to eliminate for next loops in this script
I needed to compute a complicated cross tabulation to show weighted means and standard deviations and the only method I could get that worked uses a series of nested for next loops. I know that there must be a better way to do so, but could use some assistance pointing the way. Here is my working, but inefficient script: library(Hmisc) rm(list=ls()) load('NHTS.Rdata') day.wt <-

install or uncompress package build in one platform in another platform
Hi, Is an R package built under Unix (package.tar.gz) could be installed on other platforms like windows or Mac? The compressed tar file (.tar.gz) built under Unix doesn't seem to be uncompressed under windows (unzip under windows instead of gunzip). How to proceed? Look forward to your reply, Carol

unzipping with ff
I've noticed that ff uses the unzip utility available on it's host OS to load datasets via ffload. It seems to work fine in linux, but when I try to use the package in Windows (hence dling Windows unzip utils) I get 2 errors, one telling me that the options aren't being passed to unzip correctly and another indicating that my filename is incorrect. First, does anyone know of an unzip

Why are Split and Tapply so slow with named vectors, why is a for loop faster than mapply
First, here's the problem I'm working on so you understand the context. I have a data frame of travel activity characteristics with 70,000+ records. These activities are identified by unique chain numbers. (Activities are part of trip chains.) There are 17,500 chains. I use the chain numbers as factors to split various data fields into lists of chain characteristics with each element of

RData loading weirdness
I've just had an interesting thing happen to one of our students. He's using R 1.9.1 on Linux, and so I dont expect bugfixes, I'm just reporting this out of interest in case anyone else has had this happen. Starting R caused a seg fault shortly after "[Previously saved workspace restored]". Running "R --no-restore-data" worked fine so I suspected a corrupted

RData size
Hi, I noticed a Rdata size issue that's puzzling to me. Attached find 2 example datasets in text file. Both are 100x5, so the sizes for both text file are the same. However, when I read them into R, the sizes are much different: tt<-as.matrix(read.table("tt.txt",header=T,row.names=1)) save(tt,file='tt.RData')

gunzipping the patch...
Hi, I'm sure this is a really stupid question, but when I type in the line: gunzip < ~/ext3-***extraStuffHere***.gz | patch -p1 as in the installation guide, it tells me that the patch is not a proper gzip file. What do I do??? Also, when it says "make menuconfig", does the menuconfig file appear once the patch is ungzipped, or should it be there already? I'm kinda worried

Loading .Rdata within an R function
Colleagues: I am having trouble loading data from within .Rdata file within the environment of a function. That is, the following always loads to the global environment: f1 <- function() { load("mydata.Rdata") # compute with objects from mydata.Rdata. } I wish to load mydata.Rdata only within the function f1. Perhaps I have misunderstood
