how to keep up with R?
Dear Listers, I've been a big fan of R since graduate school. After working in the industry for years, I haven't had many opportunities to use R and am mainly using SAS. However, I am still forcing myself really hard to stay close to R by reading R-help and books and writing R code by myself for fun. But by and by, I start realizing I have hard time to keep up with R and am afraid that I

R vs. Splus in Pharma/Devices Industry
Following up to some extent on Friday's discussion regarding the 'validation' of R, could I ask the list group's opinion on possible advantages of R over Splus from a pharma/devices perspective? I wish to exclude the obvious price difference, which doesn’t seem to carry as much weight as I would have thought. Besides, I have noticed many former Splus users gravitating towards R,

finite mixture model (or latent class)
Dear Listers, My post might be somewhat OT. Currently, I am trying to use flexmix to build a finite mixture model. For instance, I am getting the prior probability and coefficients for each latent class from training data. Is there a way to get the posterior probablity and prediction of a new dataset? What I am thinking is to apply the prior prob and coefficient from training set to testing data

how to make a table of summary statistics
Dear R-listers, I am a newbie with R and I am struggling with something I consider very basic. I wish to produce a table (to import in a latex file) of summary statistics, but for as much as I've been looking around and trying various alternatives (plyr, reporttools, pastecs and Hmisc) I haven't found what I am looking for. Probably I am doing something wrong, but I can't figure out

OT: any recommendation for scripting language
Right now, I am using SAS and S+/R. As a new year resolution, I am planning to learn a scripting language. from statisticians' point of view, which scripting language is worth to learn, perl, python, or any other recommendation? (Most likely, I will be learning it in windows.) Since I am not in research, I will prefer one widely used in industry and related to statistical work. if you
