Need to abstract changing name of column within loop
Hi, I'm struggling to figure out the way to change the name of a column from within a loop. The problem is I can't refer to the object by its actual variable name, since that will change each time through the loop. My xts object is A. > head(A) A.Open A.High A.Low A.Close A.Volume A.Adjusted A.Adjusted.1 2007-01-03 34.99 35.48 34.05 34.30 2574600 34.30

dropping rows
Hi! Sorry for asking a trivial questions, but I can't seem to figure this out. I have a dataframe called master containing 30-odd variables. In this dataframe, I have observations across these 30 variables from 1930 to 2003 (I've made a "year" variable). How can I drop all rows for which the year is less than 1960? I'm assuming something with ifelse() but I can't

Combined variable names
I am trying to define a large number of variables through a loop construct. I have my loop variable i being cycled through 1:100 and I would like the variables produced by this to be called vi (i.e. v1 v2 v3 etc) so, for example I'm going: for(i in 1:100) { <blank> <- a[i:N] # or whatever else you want to put on the right side } where N is previously defined. What goes in

data usage
hello, for my present project i need to use the data stored in a ca. 100mb stata dataset. when i import the data in R using: library("foreign") x<-read.dta("mydata.dta") i find that R needs a startling 665mb of memory! (in stata i can simply allocate, say, 128mb of memory and go ahead) is there anyway around this, or should i forget R for analysis of datasets of

converting stata's by syntax to R
I am struggling with migrating some stata code to R. I have a data frame containing, sometimes, repeat observations (rows) of the same family. I want to keep only one observation per family, selecting that observation according to some other variable. An example data frame is: # construct example data fam <- c(1,2,3,3,4,4,4) wt <- c(1,1,0.6,0.4,0.4,0.4,0.2) keep <- c(1,1,1,0,1,0,0)

Dummy variables model
Hi, all! Anyone know an easy way to specify the following model. Panel dataset, with stock through time, by firm. I want to run a model of y on a bunch of explanatory variables, and one dummy for each firm, which is 1 for observations that come from firm i, and 0 everywhere else. I have over 200 firms (and a factor variable that contains a firm identifier). Any easy way of going about

read.csv fails in R console in Ubuntu terminal but works in RStudio after R 3.6.3 upgrade to R 4.0.2
Hi, I am trying to download some data using read.csv and it works perfectly in RStudio and fails in the R console in the terminal in Ubuntu 18.04 after upgrading from R 3.6.3 to 4.0.2. Before upgrading this worked in the R console in the terminal also without any issues. Why would that be? How to fix this? Below please find R code output and sessionInfo(). *Works in RStudio* >

Coercing character to factor
I just downloaded version 1.0.0 and several binary libraries (VR, rpart, norm, stataread) - WinNT version. I then converted a file from Stata 6.0 to R format by using the stataread library. The file converts perfectly and I was able to use the VR function lda on the dataframe without difficulty. I then tried to use the same dataframe with RPART. The model statement:

Factors and Multinomial Logistic Regression
Dear All, I am trying to reproduce the example that I found online here http://bit.ly/11VG4ha However, when I run my script (pasted at the end of the email), I notice that there is a factor 2 between the values for the coefficients for the categorical variable female calculated by my script and in the online example. Any idea about where this difference comes from? Besides, how can I

Unexpected behavior of apply() over a 3d array
Dear listeRs, I'm finding that apply() behaves strangely when used on a 3-d array. For example: > at <- array(1:27,dim=c(3,3,3)) > at , , 1 [,1] [,2] [,3] [1,] 1 4 7 [2,] 2 5 8 [3,] 3 6 9 , , 2 [,1] [,2] [,3] [1,] 10 13 16 [2,] 11 14 17 [3,] 12 15 18 , , 3 [,1] [,2] [,3] [1,] 19 22 25 [2,] 20 23 26

GARCH
Hi, everyone! Is there a function to do single-variable GARCH in R? If yes, what library is it in? Thanks! Issue attaching a dataset
I use to work whit stata dataframe, so, when I use R I type read.dta Until today I do that without any problem, after type: mydata<-read.dta("C:/dropbox/dataframe.dta") attach(mydata) Everything works great... but today, when I typed: mydata<-read.dta("C:/dropbox/dataframe.dta") attach(mydata) Appeared: Error in substr(these, 1L, 6L) : invalid multibyte string at

looping through tasks
Hi, I'm moving (slowly) to R from STATA. I often have need to move through a set of tasks across a series of years. In this case, you can see that I'm mimicking -reshape- in STATA, but I'm less interested in the task than in programming R. library(foreign) mydata<-read.dta("z:\example.dta") for (y in 2000:2002) {

howto get the number of columns and column names of multiply data frames
Hi, I' ve read in several files with measurements into R data frames(works flawlessly). Each dataframe is named by the location of measurement and contains hundreds of rows and about 50 columns like this dataframe1. date measurment_1 .... mesurement_n 1 2 3 .. .. .. n For further processing I need to check whether or not ncol and colnames are the same for all dataframes. Also I need to

negative binomial family glm R and STATA
Dear Lister, I am facing a strange problem fitting a GLM of the negative binomial family. Actually, I tried to estimate theta (the scale parameter) through glm.nb from MASS and could get convergence only relaxing the convergence tolerance to 1e-3. With warning messages: glm1<-glm.nb(nbcas~.,data=zonesdb4,control=glm.control(epsilon = 1e-3)) There were 25 warnings (use warnings() to see

suggestions regarding reading in a messy file
I have a file in stata format, which I have read in, and I am trying to create a text file. I have exported the data using various delimiters, but I'm unable to read it back in. I originally read in the file with: library(foreign) myData <- read.dta("mydata.dta") I then exported it with write.table using comma, tab, and exclamation marks as a delimiter. When I was unable to

does R have a command the same with Stata's loop command: ` '
hey, Rers in Stata therer is a loop command ` ' which could do the following: forvalue i=1/10 { ?gen?x`i'=expression } this will generate variable: x1,x2,,,,,x10. so, does R have a corresponding one to this? And one more very basic question: after I open a file and modify it, such as generate some new variables and change some old ones, how to use the changed dataset in

Notation for previous observation in a data frame
I've created a data frame in R, but in order to clean up some of the data, I need to set certain variable observations equal to the value of their previous observation (it would be conditional, but that part's less important right now). In Stata, I would simply set var = var[_n-1] in those cases. What is the R equivalent? [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Function to modify existing data.frame--Improving R Language
Thanks to everyone who replied to my question! A comment regarding Thomas's point below: Java & other object-oriented languages that are function rather than macro based usually provide methods & other capabilities that allow pass by reference in certain cases and these methods would solve the problem I posed regarding how to change values in an existing data.frame from within a
