scope, lme, ns, nlme, splines
I want to fit a series of lme() regression models that differ only in the
degrees of freedom of a ns() spline. I want to use a wrapper function to do
this. The models will be of the form
y ~ ns(x, df=splineDF)
where splineDF is passed as an argument to a wrapper function.
This works fine if the regression function is lm(). But with lme(),
I get an error. fitfunction() below demonstrates this.

"tapply" and "data.frame"?
I want to transform the data by "tapply" to one dataframe. But I can not get
it.
For example:
> tst=tapply(point,pp,length)
> tst[1:10]
p1 p10 p100 p1000 p1001 p1002 p1003 p1004 p1005 p1006

loop through variable names
Often I perform the same task on a series of variables in a dataframe, by looping through a character vector that holds the names and using paste(), eval(), and parse() inside the loop.
For instance:
thesevars<-names(environmental)
environmental$ToyOutcome<-rnorm(nrow(environmental))
tableOfResults<-data.frame(var=thesevars)
tableOfResults$Beta<- NA

bootstrap bca confidence intervals for large number of statistics in one model; library("boot")
Sometimes one might like to obtain pointwise bootstrap bias-corrected,
accelerated (BCA) confidence intervals for a large number of statistics
computed from a single dataset. For instance, one might like to get
(so as to plot graphically) bootstrap confidence bands for the fitted
values in a regression model.

Newbies perceptions and questions
Hi,
I found rails on internet when I looking for some ''better'' way how to
create web applications. I read tutorial 4 days on rails and I have 3
questions
1. How speed is it? (very slow on my testing machine, but that is P100
with 64Mb RAM, what''s enough for php or rhtml :))
2. How does it work... I create table categories, I create model and
controller category, but

How to dump vbioses of Pascal cards?
Is there any method to dump vbioses of NVIDIA Pascal cards(not use nvflash), such as P100/P4?
I used nvagetbios, but it just report a error "Card has second bios", what does this mean?
Thanks,
Zongyong Wu

Playback + Replay Gain questions
I'm hoping to set up a headless system to playback my audio once I get back home after an extended leave. Ideally I'd just ssh in and use a curses based player to play back FLACs and mp3s. This leads me to a few quesitons:
1. What is the minimun processor speed needed to decode and play flac files? I have an old P100 I would like to use for the task if it is sufficient.
2. When

Programming Problem (for loop, random # control, 3 dimentional graph)
Dear List,
This is just a programming problem which i cannot seem
to figure out. I am trying to get a set of power from
a test (say, kolmogorov smirnov) out of a distribution
(say, G-K distribution) as follows. I am trying to
reduce to pain of writing the whole set of data points
(p# below) using "for" loop. However, I seem to have
some problem in it as the output "M" does not

Bind Failed on Port 139
I installed Samba 2.0.0 on a P100 running SlackWare Linux 96 (Kernel
2.0.0). After running configure, make, make install, and testparm, I
thought I was all ready to start up the smbd daemon. So I typed in
smbd -D -d 50
Got back a failure listing in the error log.

XMMS: busywaiting??
So, I'm seeing XMMS behave mighty strangely here.
decode_example piped into a command line player manages to playback realtime on
my p233 somewhat easily. XMMS (with the Vorbis plugin) utterly pegs the CPU
and stutters badly.
So, I started playing. Playing back mp3, xmms stutters badly (mp123 and xaudio
play back realtime without difficulty). Playing back straight wav files, xmms

function which can apply a function by a grouping variable and also hand over an additional variable, e.g. a weight
Hi,
I was wondering if there is an easy way to accomplish the following in R:
Often I want to apply a function, e.g. weighted.quantile from the Hmisc package
to grouped subsets of a data.frame (grouping variable) but then I also need to
hand over the weights which seems not possible with summaryBy or aggregate or
the like.
Is there a function to do this? Currently I do this with loops but it

embedded vorbis players
Anyone know of any vorbis players more or less the size of an MP3 player -
something that will fit in a pocket? Or some projects to make one?
I'd be willing to work on putting one together and port vorbis to some
embedded processor. Any rough idea of what processor capabilities should
be needed for the number crunching (is an FPU necessary, 16/32 bit,
speed)? I realize the dev list might be a

Need a recommendation on a good motherboard/processor combination
I need a recommendation on a good motherboard/processor combination. I
would like a motherboard that has lots of PCI slots and works well with
Asterisk without problems getting drivers working, etc. Onboard LAN
would be nice to keep from using a slot. Plan to use RedHat 8 for the
OS.
Please provide your input as soon as possible. I need to build a demo

Samba performance tuning & benchmarks
Hi all. Many KUDOS to the Samba development team!
I am trying to interpret some performance testing results, and could
use some hela, and any possible Samba tuning suggestions. Oplocks are
turned on, BTW, which has caused the Samba performance results to come
WAY up compared to with prior Samba releases.
The following test results consist of the time to perform database

Contrast SS
Hi all,
Hopefully this is an easy question and I've overlooked something
simple. I want to present specific contrasts in an ANOVA table. I can
of course get the significance tests with summary.lm, but my adviser
wants the results in ANOVA format. Here is a minimal example:
