How to personalize the rpart function: t.default(x)
I'm trying to personalize the rpart function by introducing a list('init','split','eval') in the argument method. But I receive an error message:"Error in t.default(x): argument is not a matrix". Can anyone tell me what the argument of this function is or where this function appears in the rpart function. Thanks Simone Vantini

how to personalize split function in rpart
Hallo! I am a student of the Politecnico di Milano (Milan, italy) and I'm working on CARTs. I'm trying to use the R rpart function with a personalized splitfunction... but I'm not able to do it! More precisely, I would like to know what is the meaning of the function 'init', 'split' and 'eval' named in the help page.I can't find any answer in

new acf package
I'm a PhD student and I'm working with covariance function. I'm interested to know if exist some packages in R to calculate and plot the bidimensional Autocovariance Function. the input matrix is a matrix that describe a spatial location over a 2-D space and I want to use it in the same way I can use a time serie in the 1-D acf. Thanks, Nicola.

effective df in local polinomial regression
Hallo R-users, I would like to know if there is a way to get the effective degrees of freedom in local polinomial regression. At the moment, to carry out the local polinomial regression, I am using the function locpoly() in library KernSmooth (I need to estimate both the regression function and its derivatives, up to the 3rd one). Thanks, Simone -- Simone Vantini MOX - Modeling and

help with bivariate density plot question
Hi Spencer, I have seen your name on the web site, and perhaps you can help me with my R problem. I'm trying to use KernSur to put in evidence a substructure in a bidimensional plot. My problem is that, in order to get the density in the low density areas (in which the substructure is located) I should use different bandwidths. How I can do that? Also, I think that the best choice for my

em algorithm mixture of multivariate normals
Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to have a "R code" to estimate the parameters of a mixture of bivariate (or multivariate) normals via EM Algorithm. I tried to write it, but in the estimation of the matrix of variance and covariance, i have some problems. I generate two bidimensional vectors both from different distribution with their own vector means and variance and

Rpart question - labeling nodes with something not in x$frame
I have a tree created with tr.hh.logcas <- rpart(log(YCASSX + 1)~AGE+DRUGUSEY+SEX+OBSXNUM +WINDLE, xval = 10) I would like to label the nodes with YCASSX rather than log(YCASSX + 1). But the help file for text in library rpart says that you can only use labels that are part of x$frame, which YCASSX is not. Is there a way to do what I want? Thanks in advance Peter Peter L. 3-D plot of a bidimensional lognormal distribution
Hi and thanks in advance to everyone who will be able to help me. I have 2 independent lognormal distributions with different means and sd. I want to plot them togheter in a 3D plot. How can i do this??? I'm getting crazy... Misalignment of <NA> in rownames (PR#1905)
An NA in the rownames of a matrix (or dataframe) causes misalignment when the matrix is printed: R> x <- matrix(1:12, 3,4, dimnames=list(letters[1:3], LETTERS[1:4])) R> rownames(x)[2] <- NA R> x A B C D a 1 4 7 10 <NA> 2 5 8 11 c 3 6 9 12 The bug is in function Rstrlen, in src/main/printutils.c. MatrixRowLabel and MatrixColumnLabel (same file) rely on Rstrlen

Easy question that I can't find an answer for. I'm trying to subset a data frame and want to exclude the positive values, i.e. I want the NA values. My data: > summary(temp$tuna) Min. 1st Qu. ROracle SQL length limitation
Hi All, This question was brought up some time ago but I never saw a reply so I'd like to bring it up again. When using ROracle package (version 0.5-5), I am unable to run any queries that are greater than 4000 characters in length. If I do, I get the following message: Error in oraPrepareStatement(con, statement, bind=NULL) : RS-DBI driver: (too long a statement -- it must has less than

rpart$where and predict.rpart
Hello there. I have fitted a rpart model. > rpartModel <- rpart(y~., data=data.frame(y=y,x=x),method="class", ....) and can use rpart$where to find out the terminal nodes that each observations belongs. Now, I have a set of new data and used predict.rpart which seems to give only the predicted value with no information similar to rpart$where. May I know how

Help with plotting error bars in R
Hi, I'm sorry to send email to everyone on this list, but I have a simple question which is bothering me and I can't seem to figure out the correct answer. I just downloaded R and I'm trying to reproduce some simple analysis I've done on other packages. In particular, if I have a vector of experimental values and a vector of their uncertainties, is there a way to plot the

rpart - the xval argument in rpart.control and in xpred.rpart
Dear R users, I'm working with the rpart package and want to evaluate the performance of user defined split functions. I have some problems in understanding the meaning of the xval argument in the two functions rpart.control and xpred.rpart. In the former it is defined as the number of cross-validations while in the latter it is defined as the number of cross-validation groups. If I am

plotting (a) confidence intervals (b) standard error
Hi all, I'm building a plot of the values in tmeant (below) against positions 1 to 5, using matplot. tmeant looks like this: case1 case2 pos1 861.8466 818.5909 pos2 961.2841 976.3466 pos3 878.6080 1262.8523 pos4 950.8011 1129.6080 pos5 968.1080 1063.3920 I also have lower (object tl) and upper (object tu) bounds on the confidence intervals as follows: tl: pos1

Incomplete Gamma Functions and GammaDistribution Doc errata.
Hello all, In the course of trying to implement the CDF of an InverseGammaDistribution, I have run across the need for an igamma() function. Several others have needed this function but the answers I have found so far are not totally clear to me. I'm writing for three reasons: 1) to present a small error in the docs 2) to clarify the approach we are expected to take 3) to request, for the

Plotting in the margin
Hi, I would like to place a line (tilted at an angle) in the margin of an R plot. Is there any way to place such an annotation outside the plotting area? As an alternative, being able to plot a rotated character (the pipe, |) in the margin would be sufficient. The problem is that mtext doesn't work with the srt option. As a further alternative, if I could put a legend in the margin, I
