Emacs & ESS under Windows
After the discussions about appropriate editors under Windows to use with R, I have managed to install Emacs, XEmacs, and ESS under WinNT 4.0, and these work fine. It's not necessary to compile anything to use R with ESS, just to install Emacs and ESS, and do a few modifications in some files. XEmacs is also easy to install but apparently ESS cannot run with it (confirmed by a message by Tony

Installing ESS under EMACS
Dear members, I have spent some time to make clear how I could write R programs from within EMACS using the ESS package, under Win98. Unfortunately, I have found this not quite clear for Windows 98 (though a lot of details are provided for UNIX). I have tried to create a .emacs file with a command such as (load "PATH/ess-site.el") and also added a "PATH=...\rw1010\" line in

ess in Windows (newbie Q)
I'm a rank beginner with R, and I'm stumped at how to get it to work with Xemacs under Windows XP. I'm afraid there are some VERY basic questions I have here. Yes, I did read http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html. Both R and Xemacs are installed and working. The current ess files are installed in a subdirectory of my Xemacs directory. I added the R bin directory to my

ESS+R not closing gracefully
I am having trouble with ESS+R. I don't know if it is an ESS problem or an R problem, so I'm posting to this mailing list in the first instance. I am using R 1.6.2, Windows XP (latest updates installed), XEmacs 21.4, and ESS 5.1.21. I have experienced the same problem under Windows 2000 and recent versions of Emacs and ESS (though my current Windows XP installation is from scratch, and

Can't get Sweave syntax highlighting with Emacs
I can't get Emacs to automatically do syntax highlighting of Sweave files. I have followed Friedrich's suggestion for code to insert into my .emacs file. The complete section from my .emacs file is given below. When I load a *.Snw file, font is white until I press M-x, then the first code and document chunks get highlighted, but not the rest of the file. Latex and Noweb menus are

ess settings
Dear R users, I downloaded an ess-5.2.2 package and hope to use emacs as front to work with R. I modified ~/.emacs and start R by M-x R. But I found when I quited the R session, it still asked me to save the work space or not. I added inferior-R-args with "--save" args. But it seemed that it had no effect. Can you tell me how to pass the arguments other than --no-readline to

Configuring emacs/ess on Ubuntu
Hi all, I don't know if this is the proper place to ask this, but I am trying to configure emacs/ess on Ubuntu 8.04 to run the way described for ESS and Xemacs in Windows (John Fox's guide). I installed ess as directed at http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/ . Under Windows I could use Emacs/ess fine (but I am obviously a novice at emacs), but am having trouble doing so in Ubuntu. At

Emacs and ESS help
Hi, I decided to try emacs and ess with R, but to no avail. How are these things suppose to work with R - or work, period? I downloaded the latest windows versions of each and installed them as the documentation says. But then the documentation for ess says to add (require 'ess-site) to /.emacs and restart emacs. Where is /.emacs???? I opened the ess-site.el file and it also says to

ignorant question about Roxy- mode in ESS
I am slowly getting up to speed/being dragged into using Roxygen in a project. I'm wondering if there's a way to emulate the behaviour of C-c C-p (Rd-preview-help) in Rd-mode (create a preview in a new Emacs buffer in "R Help Preview" mode), but from an Roxygen chunk. In Roxy-mode there is C-c C-e C-t (ess-proxy-preview-HTML), which works to preview the documentation derived

getting ess/emacs to link with a remote instance of R
I am running ess/emacs on Linux and have an R instance running on a remote Unix server. I would like to be able to direct input from my ess buffer to R (hope I am using the right lingo, I am new to emacs). The ess manual contains a section describing how to do just that, but a prerequisite is to install a lisp file ssh.el , which can be found at

R emacs and ess
Hi all, I want to apologise first for being a beginner with linux/emacs/ess; I am pretty good with R ;). I have R-1.9.1 installed on my directory of a linux server, I also have ess 5.2.8 installed there as well. When I call R using (C-u M-x R) in emacs, i receive the following error [no match]. I was wondering if emacs is not looking for ess in the right place (if there is something i have to

Help with history() in Emacs/ESS
Hi Everyone, I am a beginner running R 2.9.2 under Ubuntu and typically use Emacs w/ESS. However, I am confused with history() command. When I issue command history() in Emacs within an R session, this is what get: > history() Error in savehistory(file) : no history available to save Similarly, history(max=10) command gives the same error message. However, there is this In/Out Menu in the

Beginners manual for emacs and ess
Hi I heard so much about Emacs and ESS that I decided to try it out - but I am stuck at the beginning. Is there anywhere a beginners manual for Emacs & ESS to be used with R? even M-x S tells me it can't start S-Plus - obviously - but I want it to start R... Any help welcome (otherwise I will be stuck with Eclipse and R) Rainer -- Rainer M. Krug, Dipl. Phys. (Germany), MSc

emacs 21.1, R-1.3.1, and ESS
On RedHat linux 7.2, I upgraded (?) Emacs and R at the same time and now I'm getting some funny business with R and ESS. I reinstalled ESS from the tarball and re-byte-compiled. In particular, help.start() does work, and ESS works to send text regions to the R process, but ?function does not return anything, and the status line says "ESS process not ready. EMACS/ESS problems
Hello all, since we're on the topic of R-editors. I am using emacs/ess on a unix workstation (to interact with R and have been having a little problem. I usually write the R commands I need to run in a separate buffer then copy and paste them into the *R* buffer for evaluation. The problem is, if any command is spread over multiple lines emacs/R hangs when I paste it in the R buffer for

r-mode (ESS/XEmacs)
Hello, please excuse me if this is not the appropriate mailing list, but I'll give it a try! I recently switched from using Emacs 20.7.1 to XEmacs 21.4, both on cygwin / MS W2K. On Emacs the ESS 5.1.17 was working well, but now, when calling R from within XEmacs, it first asks for the working directory, then says "R process is not running". The ESS buffer holds the

How does one start R within Emacs/ESS with root privileges?
Esteemed UseRs and DevelopeRs, Apologies if this question belongs else where, but it does concern R's package installation/maintenance. How does one start R within Emacs/ESS with root privileges? I tried without success: > M-x sudo R Why i'm motivated to do so: It seems logical to me, as the only user of the PC, to keep my R library consolidated in the universal library rather

R run under Emacs fatal errors halt execution
I am running R.exe/Rterm.exe 2.7.1 under Emacs 22.1 under the DOS shell under Windows XP. (My Cygwin installation is broken!) I am not currently using ESS: > R.exe --vanilla R version 2.7.1 ... ... > 1+1 2 This works fine until I hit an R error -- pretty much any error -- when the process halts and returns to the shell: Wrong number of arguments error: > quote()
