how to make this sequence: 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1
I'm just beginning R, with book Using R for Introductory Statistics, and one of the early questions has me baffled. The question is, create the sequence: 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 using seq() and rep(). Now, as a programmer, I am punching myself to not be able to figure it out.. I mean, as simple as a for loop, but using seq, I am stumped. I would think c(1:5, 4:1) would be the brute force method

Regular expressions in R
Good afternoon list, I have the following character strings; one with spaces between the maths operators and variable names, and one without said spaces. form<-c('~ Sentence + LEGAL + Intro + Intro / Intro1 + Intro * LEGAL + benefit + benefit / benefit1 + product + action * mean + CTA + help + mean * product')

constrOptim and further arguments
Dear List, I have the code below, where I am using the constrained optimisation package, 'constrOptim.nl' to find the values of two values, b0 and b1. I have no problems when I enter further variable information DIRECTLY into the functions, fn, and heq. In this instance I require fn to have -0.0075 appended to it, and in the case of heq, h[1] has -0.2. library(alabama)

R loop function in Tableau
Hi R helpers, I hope this email finds you well. I am having trouble with R loop function in Tableau. Please see the attachment of a simple dataset. The problem is to test whether the value of columns is match. Because Tableau do not have iteration function, I coded ?if statement? in Tableau to realize the function, which is slow if having huge amount of data. I wonder to integrate

Help with text separation
Good morning R list, My apologies if this has *already* answered elsewhere, but I have not found the answer that I am looking for. I have a character string, i.e. form<-c('~ A + B + C + C / D + E + E / F + G + H + I + J + K + L * M') Now, my aim is to find the position of all those instances of '*' and to remove said '*'. However, I would also like to remove the

qplot/ggplot2 Questions
I took some data from an online poll about which R GUI people used most and I am messing around with it to learn how to use qplot. Specifically I am making a horizontal bar graph and I have two questions. 1. The categories are ordered in rather strange way at least to me. It is not alphabetical or ascending/descending order of votes cast so i had to manually state the order I wanted which is

One Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulation
Further to my email below, I have just realised that I forgot to include the specification of L and R. Hence, the code needs to include the following additional lines at the start;- L<-7.5e6 R<-2.5e6 Apologies for any confusion caused! Watching tune parameters for SVM?
Hi, I'm switch over from RapidMiner to R. (The learning curve is steep, but there is so much more I can do with R and it runs much faster overall.) In RapidMiner, I can "tune" a parameter of my svm in a nice cross validation loop. The process will print out the progress as it goes. So for a 5x cross tuning for the value of C with auc as my performance measure, I see XV C

R and Tableau Compatibility
Good morning R helpers, I hope this email finds you well. Recently, I am thinking of using R with connection to Tableau. I search information online but I did not see any official documentations about these compatibilities. I have Tableau version 10.1 and I wonder which versionS of R is compatible to this Tableau version. Thank you very much. Your quick assistance will be appreciated. Best,

One Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulation
Tony, I?m not sure what exactly you?re trying to do, but you're not really taking advantage of vectorization in your R code. I've tried to clean it up a little. The clamped lognormal is almost always 0 or L? That seems a little odd. You seem to be using the inverse cdf method of drawing samples. That's not necessary in R for standard probability distributions. You may want to do a

Organizations where IT has approved the use of R software
Hi Gang, I realize this post is not directly related to programing issues with R, however, it appears this may be the best place to ask my question. I am putting forward a request that R be considered "approved" software in my organization. Never an easy task, this is made much more difficult given that it is open source software (sends the IT gang into little fits). So, I am

'all subsets' fitting algorithm for Bayesian approach
Hi R experts I am just wondering if something is already available (or easily adaptable) to do the following. I am planning to build linear models for all possible combinations of terms, so for example if the terms are sent into a function as this string " X1 + X2 + X3 + X4 + X1:X2" I would want to build models for all possible combinations of these 5 terms, e.g. m1 <- lm( y ~

Tableau Public vis software / Ubuntu
Hey all -- First post, so first off thanks for creating this wonderful software and helping out new users like me adapt to the wine-way :) Has anyone managed to get Windows/Mac only data analysis and vis suite Tableau Public (http://www.tableausoftware.com/public/download) running with any version Wine yet? It goes through the motions of installing, but then won't run. I'd welcome any

Some questions about string processing
Hi all A couple of questions about string processing from someone who has only scratched the surface so far. 1) I am wanting to send some strings into a function to allow flexibility inside. My first idea has been e.g. auto_io <- function( var_string, factors ) { # e.g. var_string sent as "test_file.txt" factors sent as "x1 + x2 + x3" # input data_name <- get(

Looking for a Rails AJAX gallery/tutorial
Hello everyone, Do any of you know of a downloadable Rails app that demonstrates all the bundled AJAX-iness in an impressive form? I''m looking for two things: - something I can show off to wow people with Rails'' built-in AJAX power, then show them the code that does the work and wow them again with the simplicity. In short, something that will impress potential customers, as

Scale set of 0 values returns NAN??
Hi, More questions in my ongoing quest to convert from RapidMiner to R. One thing has become VERY CLEAR: None of the issues I'm asking about here are addressed in RapidMiner. How it handles misisng values, scaling, etc. is hidden within the "black box". Using R is forcing me to take a much deeper look at my data and how my experiments are constructed. (That's a very
