For loop indicies
I would like to run a for loop with an index going from 0 to 499 but the following seems to miss out the first value: C <- 499 for (i in 0:C) The alternative is: C <- 500 for (i in 1:C) { #Then every time I use i, I replace it with i-1 } Is this a good way to do it or is tere a better way? Thank you, ThomasThis message and any attachment are intended solely for the addressee and may

Installing packages
Hi, I am trying to install the network package at my work computer. I'm using R version 2.12.0 (2010-10-15) At home I can use the Package Installer, but at work this is blocked by our firewall. What I usually do is download the Mac binary and copy it to R.Framework/Resources/Library, but this isn't working with network. I get the following, which I think means I have the wrong binary for

recoding variables-recode not working
Hi, I have numerical variable that I want to recode into categories '0' and '1 and more' and do analysis with that data. I have tried various of possibilities to do so, but I am sucked and nothing is working. recode(Q12, "0='A';1:30='B'") cut(Q12, breaks=c(0,1,30), lables=c('0', '1 and more')) cat(Q12, "0=0;1-33=1") What should

Seeking help with an apparently simple recoding problem
Hello, I have struggled, for longer than I care to admit, with this seemingly simple problem, but I cannot find a solution other than the use of long drawn out ifelse statements. I know there has to be a better way. Here is stripped down version of the situation: I start with: a <- c(1,0,1,0,0,0,0) b <- c(1,1,1,1,0,0,0) c <- c(1,1,0,1,0,0,0) rbind(a,b,c) [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5]

Truncating with decoding/recoding
Hello all. Thanks for FLAC. It's served me well for the past few years. Is there a program out there to truncate a FLAC file without decoding/recoding it ? Preferably command-line (I already know at what point I want to truncate it). Thanks in advance. -- Andr? help recoding
hi R-listers, I would like some help recoding a variable. I have a dataframe 'cause' that translates between a set of codes: acc nds - - 1 2 3 4 5 8 ... ... the desired result for dataframe 'p': a - 1 5 5 would be: a b - - 1 2 5 8 5 9 I have tried: transform(p, b=cause$nds[cause$acc==p$a]) but for some reason it complains about the difference in length between the

Recoding
I want to do some recoding of variables: code Age into groups and recode a factor into a smaller number of levels. There are a couple of options for recode functions, in the car package and in memisc, and I think in gmisc. Does anyone have any opinions on the the easiest, most reliable approach for these problems? David Scott _________________________________________________________________

suggestions/improvements for recoding strategy
I am recoding some data. Many values that should be 1.5 are recorded as 1-2. Some example data and my solution is below. I am curious about better approaches or any other suggestions. Thanks! # example input data myData <- read.table(textConnection("id, v1, v2, v3 a,1,2,3 b,1-2,,3-4 c,,3,4"),header=TRUE,sep=",") closeAllConnections() # the first column is IDs so remove

Recoding -- test whether number begins with a certain number
Dear R community, I have a question concerning recoding of a variable. I have a data set in which there is a variable devoted to the ISCO code describing the occupation of this certain individual (http://www.ilo.org/public/english/bureau/stat/isco/isco88/major.htm). Every type of occupation begins with a number and every number added to this number describes th occupation more detailed. Now my

numeric variables converted to character when recoding missing values
Dear R helpers, I have a data frame where missing values for numeric variables are coded as 999. I want to recode those as NAs. The following only partially succeeds because numeric variables are converted to character in the process: df <- data.frame(a=c(999,1,999,2), b=LETTERS[1:4]) is.na(df[2,1]) <- TRUE df a b 1 999 A 2 NA B 3 999 C 4 2 D is.numeric(df$a) [1] TRUE

Recoding Multiple Variables in a Data Frame in One Step
Hi, I can't for the life of me find how to do this in base R, but I'd be surprised if it's not possible. I'm just trying to replace multiple columns at once in a data frame. #load example data data(api) #this displays the three columns and eight rows i'd like to replace apiclus1[ apiclus1$meals > 98 , c( "pcttest" , "api00" , "sch.wide" ) ]

Adding a new column to data frame (recoding)
Dear R users, I have a very simple question. What is the easiest way to recode data in one of the columns of a data frame and put it into a new column? For example, here is a simple data frame: var1 1 1 2 2 3 3 How do I add a new column to data - 'var2' in which I group values in 'var1', for example: var1 var2 1 1 4 2 2 4 3 3 5 It's got to
