Font quality in base graphics
I am attempting to get publication quality graphs using R on Ubuntu. I
encounter lots of problems in using cex to control font size: for instance
cex=1.5 results in very blocky characters. I then tried to use res=1200
while creating a PNG file, hoping that this would solve the problem, but it
did not. When doing the above, a second problem appeared: the font size
relative to the graphics decreased

Location of Packages?
Sorry, one more: on OSX, I deleted my old 2.9.2 R.app, and installed the 64
bit version of 2.9.0. I then did an "install.packages("car")" under my new
2.9.0. It seems to have worked, but alas, I still get an error that package
'car' was built under R version 2.9.2 . Where exactly does R under OSX
install its packages? (is it a bug that another car is loaded?)

CairoPDF, Fonts, and Windows 7
Hi All:
I have some basic questions about Cairo graphics engine. I'm trying to use the Cairo package to produce PDF output, mainly because I perceive it to be easy to use with a wide variety of fonts.
But right now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what fonts are available to be used with Cairo, specifically the CairoPDF function. I've been able to successfully produce some test PDFs

Cairo creates italized plots?
Hi,
Has anyone else run into this weird behaviour where the text in the plots
created using Cairo are always italicized. For example,
library(Cairo)
Cairo(file='cairo_created', type='pdf', dpi=100)
plot(1:10)
dev.off()
This produces the following attached 'cairo_created.pdf' graph. Notice how
the text is italicized. The same code but using pdf() as the graphics

[LLVMdev] OpenMPI and llvm-gcc
Hi,
I was wondering whether or not MPI-libraries are expected to work with
llvm-gcc?
I tried to compile openmpi-1.3 using the llvm-gcc4.2-2.5-x86-darwin9
distribution on my MacBook Pro running OS 10.5.6.
Installation using the gcc (gcc version 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5490))
worked well.
But for the llvm-gcc I get the following error message (during the
make):

Protocol stream error on extended attribute, silent failure to copy all attributes
I'm using rsync 3.0.7 on Mac OS X 10.6, compiled according to Mike
Bombich's instructions at http://www.bombich.com/rsync.html. Rsync
repeatedly exits with a protocol data stream error when trying to copy
some com.apple.FinderInfo extended attributes. While testing this issue,
I found that rsync is not actually copying all extended attributes even
when there is no error message. I'm

URW Fonts Description in Installation and Administration Manual
Good day,
In section A.2, the manual advises "Linux users will want the urw-fonts package". However, this package only seems to be available for RedHat Linux and Fedora Linux. What about for Debian or Ubuntu ? There is no urw-fonts package for them. Are there any other packages not mentioned that are important for these two distributions ?

Truetype and Opentype font in pdf device
Deal all,
I want to know if truetype or opentype fonts are available in pdf
device (i.e., pdf() or dev.copy2pdf()), and if so, how to do it?
Now I can do as followings:
1. convert ttf to afm using ttf2afm, e.g.: $ ttf2afm Impact.ttf > Impact.afm
2. put the afm file in $R_HOME/library/grDevices/afm
3. register a new type1 font: pdfFonts(Impact=Type1Font("Impact",

Wine compilation without fonts in CentOS 5.4
I'm new to Linux and am using CentOS 5.4 (RHEL) as distribution. I'm trying to compile the latest version of wine 1.1.43 to install the Full Tilt Poker. I compile, but with some errors in the shell. I install the Full Tilt Poker, but when I play, the fonts do not appear. Screens appear without something in writing. In Ubuntu the fonts appear normally, but with an install .deb. Could anyone

Dear R Users---
[Because I struggled with this for a while, I decided to post it into
r-help for the benefit of others, where google search will pick it up.
thanks to everyone who made these facilities available.]
The task is to use your own opentype otf fonts in an R-created pdf
file using the pdf device (not with the [excellent] CairoPDF device,

get unicode ranges from a TTF ???
Hello list,
Is there a command line tool I run on a ttf font and get a list of the
Unicode Ranges for that that font that would be compatible with the
unicode-range: parameter in a CSS @fontface declaration?
I'm guessing something in the python world probably exists...
Hopefully something that works in CentOS 7
I need something like that for a FLOSS font server project that doesn't

GVIM annoyances
I've just upgraded from my old F9 box to C7, which of course means lots
of changes.? However, the ones are are annoying me most are with VIM.
No matter what I do I can't get? gvim to open in a reasonable size. I
have a dual headed setup (laptop + external) and every time gvim opens
it takes up both screens.
I've tried a few suggestions including the one below without success.?

4Story charters, monsters, mounts are not animated
Hi,
4Story is free mmorpg game, some kind WoW clone. Its run fine but has really annoying bug reported here http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17488 by Pat and confirmed by me and Irfan Adilovic. There is nothing going on around this bug since February. Its not random bug its rather solid ;) so maybe finding it and fixing wont be so hard. In addition, as I said before game is totally free so

Plotmath on Fedora 31 broken with with pango >= 1.44 - workarounds?
Dear list
On Fedora 31 the pango library has recently updated to version >= 1.44
and in doing so has switched to using the HarfBuzz library (from
FreeType) and dropped Adobe Type 1 font support. This causes problems
with plotmath as all bar one of the glyphs doesn't render (see
attached PNG image if it makes it through the list filters - if not I
have shared a copy via my google drive:
