Can't install package gbm, because packageVersion is not an exported object from namespace::Utils
I'm running R 2.11.1 on 64 bit Debian. I've had no problem installing any

Extending suggestion for stopifnot
I am using a variant of stopifnot a lot. can I suggest that base R
extends its functionality? I know how to do this for myself. this is
a suggestion for beginners and students. I don't think it would break
anything.
first, I think it would be more useful if it had an optional character
string, so users could write
stopifnot( is.matrix(m), "m is not a matrix" )

possible bug in packageVersion()?
Hi,
I received a bug report from a French user who told me there was
something wrong with the function packageVersion(), but
packageDescription() worked well. Below is the session info; I'm not
sure if other French users can reproduce the error message:

suppress *specific* warnings?
Not desperately important, but nice to have and possibly of use to
others, is the ability to suppress specific warnings rather than
suppressing warnings indiscriminately. I often know of a specific
warning that I want to ignore (because I know that's it's a false
positive/ignorable), but the current design of suppressWarnings() forces
me to ignore *any* warnings coming from the

ggplot2/plyr interaction with latest R-devel?
I apologize in advance for not having done more homework in advance,
but thought I would send this along to see if anyone else was seeing this.
I am having some sort of ggplot2/plyr/very-recent-R-devel dependency
issues.
Just installed

How to change name of .so/.dll
Hi,
I've added R_init_data_table to the "data.table" package (which has a dot
in its name). This works well in R 2.15.0, because of this from the

A demonstrated shortcoming of the R package management system
CRAN, by relying on the powerful package management system that is part of R,
provides an unparalleled framework for extending R with nearly 20k packages.
We recently encountered an issue that highlights a missing element in the
otherwise outstanding package management system. So we would like to start a
discussion about enhancing its feature set. As shown below, a mechanism to

Help on aggregate method
Dear R experts,
I would really appreciate if you had an idea on how to use more
efficiently the aggregate method:
More specifically, I would like to calculate the mean of certain
values on a data frame,? grouped by various attributes, and then
create a new column in the data frame that will have the corresponding
mean for every row. I attach part of my code:

[patch] giving library() a 'version' argument
I've made a small enhancement to R that would help developers better control what versions of code we're using where. Basically, to load a package in R, one currently does:
library(whateverPackage)
and with the enhancement, you can ensure that you're getting at least version X of the package:
library(whateverPackage, version=3.14)
