dataframe: string operations on columns
Dear all,
how can I perform a string operation like strsplit(x," ") on a column
of a dataframe, and put the first or the second item of the split into a
new dataframe column?
(so that on each row it is consistent)
Thanks

write.csv naming file after function argument
Dear R-users,
I'm writing a program that constructs a dataset. I wish to save the dataset
to a file.
Here's a very simple example of what I'm trying to do
function(x=peter){
y <- x/2
write.csv(y, file = "...\x")
}
The problem is that I want to name the dataset as whatever the name of the
input is. In this case peter.
How do I do this?
Thank you in advance.

Merging dataframe with list
I often read SPSS system files (*.sav) into R using the 'read.spss' function from the 'foreign' library. To retain all the meta data, i.e. 'variable labels', I call the function like this:
test.sav <- read.spss('http://www.cdc.gov/healthyYouth/shpps/2006/spss/envs2006.sav',
to.data.frame=FALSE,
use.value.labels=TRUE
)
This returns a list, which is fine.

Setting Values of Elements in a Dataframe
Dear All,
I am experiencing some problems in resetting the values of some selected
elements in a dataframe.
Consider
d<-seq(-1,1,length=16)
dim(d)<-c(4,4)
d<-as.data.frame(d)
sel_pos<-which(d>0, arr.ind=TRUE)
d[sel_pos]<- -9
which returns the error
Error in `[<-.data.frame`(`*tmp*`, sel_pos, value = -9) :
only logical matrix subscripts are allowed in replacement

question about converting a matrix to a dataframe
First I have a matrix called stocks1:
> class(stocks1)
[1] "matrix"
Here are the first 5 rows of the last 4 columns:
> stocks1[1:5,2:5]
[,1] [,2] [,3] [,4]
[1,] 80.73 31.95 25.4 25.69
[2,] 83.66 31.95 27.12 25.2
[3,] 83.27 32.93 28.74 26.29
[4,] 83.9 34.07 29.77 26.6
[5,] 82.74 35.18 30.24 27.41
Now, why can't I convert this into a dataframe?

save in for loop
Dear users,
My problem concerns save() within a for loop.
Here is my code:
for (i in 1:4) {
temp <- data.frame(a=(i+1):(i+10), b=LETTERS[(i+1):(i+10)])
filename <- paste("file", i, sep="")
assign(filename, temp)
save(filename, file=paste(filename, ".rda", sep=""))
}
As you can see, save() doesn't work as I would like: (1) the object

export test results to csv
Hi everybody!
I would like to export the results of a test statistic in a *.csv file,
but get an error.
The code is below.
The data are attached as .txt with tab as separator. I tried to get a
sample dataset, but for some reason it didn't work, so please excuse the
length of the file. I also attached a txt with the output (copy/paste)
in case that helps.

number of items to replace is not a multiple of replacement length
Hey all,
I am writing a function in which I will have a matrix of 4 columns and a
variable amount of rows.
The first to columns will always contain be of the Character type, the third
and fourth columns
can be a variation of data types, usually characters and integers, but
sometimes lists or matrices.
At one point the code makes, for each row, a copy of that row, then it makes
some adjustments
