what is the preferred method to create a package local variable?
for the moment, I'm using:
.onAttach <- function(libname, pkgname) {
.bbg.db.conn <<- dbConnect(dbDriver("PostgreSQL"), user="blah","blah")
}
.onUnload <- function(libpath) {
dbDisconnect(.bbg.db.conn)
}
which results in a hidden global variable in the global environment.
I would prefer to make the assignment only in the package namespace.

generic database access methods
I've been putting together a package that defined generic methods for
database access. The packages is called "Rdbi." It borrows as much as
possible from existing database packages / proposals. I'd like to start
a discussion about the proposed interface. Here's what I've come up
with so far:
#
# Rdbi: connectionMethods.R
#
dbConnect <- function(dbObj, ...)

RMySQL query: why result takes so much memory in R ?
Hi
I just started with RMySQL. I have a database with roughly 12 millions
rows/records and 8 columns/fields.
From all 12 millions of records I want to import 3 fields only.
The fields are specified as:id int(11), group char(15), measurement
float(4,2).
Why does this take > 1G RAM? I run R on suse linux, with 1G RAM and with
the code below it even fills the whole 1G of swap. I just

stack level too deep when parsing xml
I''m trying to figure out why I''m getting a stack level too deep error.
I have controller which parses xml (about 1400 lines) and ingests it
into mysql. First I was getting a system stack error every time, but
then I found the ulimit -s command which allows me to raise it from 8mb
to 64mb. That solved the problem I thought,
But now, I can parse the xml once, but when I do it

Rdbi package and PgSQL
I can use the Rdbi package to connect to a PostGreSQL server fine but
when I use the dbDisconnect(), I get a segmentation error and it throws
me out of R. I'm using RH7.2, R1.4.1, Rdbi 0.1-2, and Rdbi.PgSQL 0.1-2.
Anyone else seen anything like this and have an possible answer?

BUG: scp -r follows symlinks
hey all
'scp -r ' follows symlinks. IMO this is a bug and should be changed - it:
a) hampers the use of scp. As it stands, I cannot use 'scp -r' because of this
behavior. If someone links to '/', or if I hit a recursive symlink, I'm screwed.
b) It is inconsistant with cp. When you 'cp -r' on a file, it does NOT follow the
symlink. When you scp

RMySQL performance over RODBC
R-help list,
I ported some R code from MS Windows PC to sun-solaris. Both do queries on
the same
MySQL database.
PC version of R is 1.6.1 and solaris version is 1.6.0. I use RMySQL_0.5-0
(on solaris)
and RODBC 1.0-1 on PC to connect to MySQL. The PC version took about 65
mins. to run
wheras the Solaris (SunOS 5.7) version took 375 mins. (> 6 hrs). R and
RMySQL are
resident on the same host

Please announce on comp.protocols.smb
I would like to suggest that you announce new releases on the
comp.protocols.smb news group. I realize that you have an announcement
mailing list, but with my mail box clogged with spam, I am trying to
avoid subscribing to mailing lists. I also hear that there is a
mailing.unix.samba-technical news group, but that is not carried by
all the news servers. The comp.protocols.smb news group seems

That doesn't work for me either. The command is accepted, but the messages
are not expunged.
I guess my search/fetch will just have to return the mailbox name, in
addition to other fields, and then I'll need to loop through the mailbox
names and perform multiple expunges for each user. I understand the desire
