Can I tell if the associated record is new in a belongs_to save?
In a belongs_to association, is there a way to tell if the associated object was newly created? Hopefully this will explain my question: A Firm class declares has_many<http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html#M000530>:clients and a client class declares

Polymorphic form
I have two partials to deal with contact information. The Contact information uses single-table polymorphism. I want to be able to use save on Contact and set ''type'' manually, based on the type of form the user is filling in. This is saved as the value on a hidden field. class Contact belongs_to :person acts_as_list :scope => :person validates_presence_of :type

optimization
Ok, so, I''ve written my first app in rails. It''s pretty nifty. Only one problem. Slower than you could possibly comprehend. Processing PersonController#show (for 67.138.254.231 at Thu Mar 03 21:04:16 Eastern Standard Time 2005) Parameters: {:id=>"1", :controller=>"person", :action=>"show"} [4;35mPerson Load (0.219000) [0;37mSELECT

Removing One Element From a Serialized Form
Hi all, I''m trying to serialize a form with the exception of one specific element. Serializing the form in a hash (without pulling out specific elements) works: <li> <%= link_to_remote ''(Save)'', {:url => post_path(@post), :with => "$ (''post_form'').serialize(true)" }, :method => :put %> </li> The generated code

inverse_of breaks for unsaved child associations during save of parent
I''m willing to write a patch for this issue: https://github.com/rails/rails/issues/8893 But want to confirm that the new behavior makes sense before I make the effort. Essentially if you have an unsaved parent and child, and the parent''s association to the child has an inverse_of declared on it. When the parent gets saved, it updates the foreign key on the child, and this

Breakdowns in has_many abstraction
I discovered an interesting aspect of has_many behavior that I''m struggling to work around. I''m not sure if I''m doing something wrong, or if it''s a legitimate bug, or if it''s an inherent part of Rails that I just have to learn to deal with. It boils down to these two problems: - changes in collection objects (i.e. models that belong_to a container

New binary package set for EL6 x86_64
Hi users of EL6 based distributions, I'm pleased to announce a new alternative binary package repository for EL6 x86_64. The aim is to provide a supplemental set of packages which may contain software not included in your base system. These packages are based on pkgsrc, a cross-platform package manager. In this initial release there are 13,152 packages available. For now I am specifically

pkgsrc provider for Package?
Hello I''m wondering if anyone has looked into adding pkgsrc package management as a provider for Package? We use Joyent accelerators (zones on OpenSolaris) for our many of our production services and about a year ago Joyent switched from Blastwave to pkgsrc for userland packages. pkgsrc catalog - http://pkgsrc.se/ pkgsrc guide - http://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/ joyent pkgsrc

form with saved and new model instances
Hello all - I''m looking to create a form that would allow the editing of existing model instances while also allowing new model instances to be created. (its an order form where the model instances would be an order line item joining the order to an item) It looks like either one alone is easy, because in the former case the field names would be foo[id] where the id is from the database,

Association of table to itself
I''m curious what would be the best way to represent people and whether the person has someone marked as their friend. Here are my thoughts so far: People table - id - name Relationships table - person_id - friend_id Now my problem is I don''t know how to set up these associations (if this is even correct). Friend_id would be an id to someone else from the people table.

select(object, method, choices, options = {}, html_options = {})
Hi, I''m using: select(object, method, choices, options = {}, html_options = {}) I''ve read the API where there''s this example: select("post", "person_id", Person.find_all.collect {|p| [ p.name, p.id ] }, { :include_blank => true }) should give this code: <select name="post[person_id]"> <option></option>

Validation dependent on unsaved parent
I''m having trouble with a validation that depends on an attribute of a belongs_to parent. If the child is added to an unsaved parent (parent.children << new child), the has_many collection parent.children includes the unsaved child. However the belongs_to attribute child.parent appears to be nil until the parent has been saved. Without access to the parent attributes, the validation

Hi there, I''m currently building a membership application and I want to be able to select, not just all the memberships, but the most current membership from the database on a per user basis. I have linked the tables as shown:- class Membership < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :payment belongs_to :person end class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :memberships
