Using a lib in YAML fixtures
I''m using the runt library [1] to do some temporal expression matching. I want to keep the expression in a binary field in my db. I figured that then in order to do the fixtures, I''d need to do some erb in the yaml file. So I came up with this: onetime: id: 1 name: One Time description: This event occurs only one time. timex: <%= REYear.new(7) & REMonth.new(24)

Test fixture syntax
OK, I know I''m doing something bone-headed, but I can''t for the life of me figure it out. I''ve read the test fixtures Rdoc about eight dozen times, and it says (to me) that if I have a YAML fixture file, dogs.yml that looks like this: fido: id: 1 breed: Terrier fifi: id: 2 breed: Poodle Then I can include fixtures :dogs in my functional test, and

fixture problem, TypeError: nil is not a symbol
When I run rake against Rails 8.5 to test unaltered model tests with yaml fixtures I get the error and stack trace reproduced below for every one of my model objects. Has anyone seen something this before? Any idea what could be going on here? The following ruby-talk thread may or may not be relevant: http://blade.nagaokaut.ac.jp/cgi-bin/scat.rb/ruby/ruby-talk/95301. Thanks much,

I want to stick my models in a module
I''ve got enough models now that I''d like to separate them into modules. For example, I have the class Player that I want to stick in the Trainer module. I''ve changed the definition to class Trainer::Player I''ve created a models/trainer dir, test/unit/trainer, and test/fixtures/trainer. Change the PlayerTest class to be Trainer::PlayerTest. I get the

Trouble with composed_of
I''m trying to use composed_of within my model. I have a field in my database named ''card1'', which is simply a string. I have this in my model class Player < ActiveRecord::Base composed_of :card1, :class_name => ''Card'' end class Card attr_reader :value, :suit def initialize(s) @value = s[0].chr @suit = s[1].chr end end The

Plugin w/ Migrations and/or Fixtures?
I''m working on a plugin which needs to add both schema and data to the app database, and I''m trying to figure out the best way to do it. I''d like to use a db migration to modify the schema and load the data from a YAML fixture, but Rails doesn''t seem to support migrations for plugins. To do so, the schema_info table would need to change to include a

binary info in test fixtures?
Hi all, I have a shopping application I am testing, and one of the models is an Order model, within which a credit card number is encrypted and stored in the db (mysql) as a BLOB field. When trying to run my unit tests, I cannot get my model fixtures to load the encrypted data. If, in my dynamic fixture (YAML) file, I could have access to my app''s models, the problem would be trivial..

Fixtures and Relationships
In my daily development, I migrate back and forth between versions, and often do: rake load_fixtures... ... in order to populate my development database with fun data. Now, with any HABTM relationship, there are failures, as there is no way to say "which" fixtures to load first. Within an actual functional or unit test case, you could simply load them in the proper order, but

Fixtures Cleanup
All, I''ve been playing a bit with some patches to make the fixture loading and management code a little bit easier to maintain. If I were to start chopping out features, how would you feel about losing: Fixture instantiation, Old school single-file fixtures, CSV fixtures, The ability to specify a subset of fixtures (everything''s always loaded instead), The ability to

Rails'' fixtures suck! But what about something like this?
Sorry about the very long email, but this is a hairy topic that''s been annoying me for some time and I decided to try to do something about. Also, if you got this twice, I apologize too, but it didn''t seem to have successfully gone out the first time. Background: ---------- I''ve been dealing with Rails for about a year and a half now. Rails without a db - how to run tests
I''m writing a simple app that doesn''t need to use a database. I added :active_record to the config.frameworks -= line in environment.rb file. This lets me run ./script/generate fine without complaining about no connection. However if I try to run a functional test, it complains about no connection being established. Well...I don''t want a connection to be established.

Manually loading fixture data
Hi all, I''ve got some tables with fixed amounts of data in them (a "states" table, for example). For tables like this I can easily put *all* of the data in the fixture. For general futzing purposes, and for those times I want to reload a database from scratch outside of testing (for whatever reason), what''s the best approach? I thought perhaps ActiveRecord::Base had

load fixtures
I''m finally getting beyond using basic test fixtures, and a few questions have popped up. Has anyone found ways to do these? 1. Use a test fixture that is named differently from its table name? We''d like to have more than one possible fixture per table. (Or perhaps use test fixtures named similarly but in different directories.) 2. Load a test fixture for one test method only

Creating performance test fixtures from development db? How?
Hi all! I''m looking into the testing chapter of Agile Web Development With Rails (2nd ed.). I want to performance test my app, but I''m too lazy to write fixtures for performance test. I''d rather use the data from my development db (because the data is so close to the production data). How do I get the data into the test db without writing fixtures? Could you please

Preconditions
Sorry, lots of questions these days. Is there a normal approach for preconditions? In JUnit, I might put a few assertions in the setUp() just to make sure that the test ''data'' I''ve created meets expectations before going to test it. So, for instance, I''ve got an object that is audited using acts_as_audited and I''d like to test the XML that results

Odd fixtures behaviour
This is Rails 2.0.2 I have two yaml fixture files, both loading into ARs with acts_as_tree, so they both have the !!omap directive set. One, categories.yml, loads just fine. The other goes very weird, somehow fixtures.rb opens the file, reads "name: All" from the first record, and then tries to open a file called "All", which then fails miserably on line . I can''t

Fixtures and table name
Is there a way to use table name other than the default or to turn it around have multiple fixture files associated to the same table. Here''s my use case: I have multiple unit test classes that all work with the same model class and hence the same database table. However, for each test class I want the data to be in a different state. So I''d like to have something like class

create and destroy fixture manually in method
Hi, My test case has two fixtures and eight methods. But one of the eight methods need one more fixture. How do I solve this? Okay, I put the additional fixture in common place so every method has additional access to the additional fixture. The problem is the additional fixture depend on that two fixtures (foreign key). When I run the test, it complains something like this:
