lokern package
Dear Martin,
I have been playing a lot with the glkerns() function in the "lokern"
package for "automatic" smoothing of time-series data. This kernel
smoothing approach of Gasser and Mueller seems to perform quite well for
estimating the function and its derivatives (first and second derivatives).
In fact, this is one of the best methods based on my simulation studies for

legend() graphics output bug (PR#5725)
Full_Name: Daniel Gasser
Version: 1.8.1
OS: Win XP
Submission from: (NULL) (130.60.20.92)
The legend()-Function shows a different behaviour than it did in Version 1.6.1.
It plots a black box left of the legend lines on each legend row. In 1.6.1 there
was just the line in appropriate color for each row in the legend (i was using
exactly the same legend statement and same plot function).

Manage huge database
Hello,
Recently I have been trying to open a huge database with no success.
It’s a 4GB csv plain text file with around 2000 rows and over 500,000
columns/variables.
I have try with The SAS System, but it reads only around 5000 columns, no
more. R hangs up when opening.
Is there any way to work with “parts” (a set of columns) of this database,
since its impossible to manage it all

multiple plot overlay - dataframe
I hope you could help me with this. I have a dataframe
with 5 columns, the first column determining the X
values, and the rest four determining four separate Y
vectors. How can I plot them on the same graph,
overlaying each other?
Thanks.

Hi!
I want to host my own server on my very own PC.
I tried to put my public IP and my private IP on the config file but it didnt work neither ways.
How can I host an Icecast server that can go public around the world?
I did it locally and it worked but right now I don't know what I have to do. Thank you!

Login batch file not working for Win7
HI
I'm running samba3x-3.5.10-0.110.el5_8.x86_64 on a fully updated
CentOS-5.8 system as PDC.
We upgraded our lab machines to Win7 over the summer
The logins work ok and the homes share is being mounted from a
separate fileserver. However the login batch command script is not
running. It's just a simple script which syncs the system time and
mounts another share.

About NAS versus Samba
Hi there,
Has anyone tried to configure a NAS server to authenticate users using a
Samba PDC, or even a Samba4 DC (AD-compatible) or an IPA server?
I'm evaluating replacing some Linux file server for a NAS product, but
all them make me nervous when the vendor talks about "Active Directory
support" and nothing else.
In theory, many NASes are Linux boxes running samba, so there

Samba network shares over VPN
Hi there,
I have two computers, one Windows XP other Windows 7 (actually a dozen
each) which are members of a Samba domain. Users have no problem login
in to the domain, running the login script to map network drives and
accesssing files on them, for both computers.
I want to give users remote access using a VPN (OpenVPN to be exact).
The idea is to login on a disconnected computer using a

LLVM social in Sweden?
Hi all,
Thanks for the answers! I've also received a couple of answers
off-list, so there should be enough of us to get something rolling.
I think we should start with something informal to get to know each
other and see what our interests are etc. So, I've created a poll with
a random slice of March here [1], so we can sync on the date / time.
Please pick as many options as you can. The

samba virtual server x domain membership
Hi there,
I have a samba server (version 3.6) named 'lnbxservcid' which is already
a member of a domain whose PDC is another samba server (version 3.4).
I'm using the standard samba3 packages from centos and from servnet (as
CentOS.4 comes with only samba 3.0.x, but later CentOS releases came
with samba3-3.4.x packages).
I wish to create on the lnxservcid machine another samba

[PATCH] Large log output does not print newline
Hi,
I think I found a minor bug in OpenSSH's log functionality: If a log
message which is larger than MSGBUFSIZE=1024 and logged to stderr, then the
newline (\r\n) is not printed. This is due to the fact that the newline is
added after the log message concatenated with "\r\n" is snprintf'd to
another buffer of the same size. If the source buffer (fmtbuf) would
already fill the

I do not achieve to install some packages
I can't load the packages locfit, lokern and quantreg.
When I try to load the 3 packages the R program says that the pakages are not properly installed. He says to see the note in ?library.
I think that the error is because there is no built field in the 3 packages.
What can I do to make the packages run.
My OS is Windows XP.
Thank you

Plotting factors in graph panel
Thanks, Pikal and Jim. Yes, it has been a long time Jim. I hope you have
been well.
Pikal, thanks. Your solution may be close to what I want. I did not know
that I was posting in HTML. I just copied the data from Excel and posted in
the email in Gmail. The data is still in Excel, because I have not yet
figured out what is a good way to organize it in R. I am posting it again
below as text. These

Would it

Minimum valid number of observations for rpart
Hi,
I wonder if anyone knows a study dealing with the minimum valid number of
observations when using CART?.
On top of that, when using RandomForest, is it possible to obtained a
interpretable tree model as the graphical output of the analysis, just
like in "rpart"?
Thanks a lot in advance

need help with smooth.spline
Dear R listers,
When using smooth.spline to interpolate data, results are generally
good. However, some cases produce totally unreasonable results.
The data are values of pressure, temperature, and salinity from a
probe that is lowered into the ocean, and the objective is to
interpolate temperature and salinity to specified pressures. While
smooth.spline provides excellent values at the
