Corrections for Solaris stuff in manual
There are a number of errors in the R manual about Solaris. http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-admin.html#Solaris 1) Firstly, Sun are now owned by Oracle, who bought them for $7 billion. 2) "(Recent Sun machines are Opterons (?amd64?) rather than ?x86?, but 32-bit ?x86? executables are the default.) " That's incorrect. All recent Sun workstations used *Intel* CPUs -

close but no cigar
Hi Everyone: It turns out that there's still a small ( I hope ) problem. I'm close but that only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. Here's my problem: When trying to load a package that I am writing, the load is looking for the packageDescription function in the utils package but not finding the utils package. I looked on cran and utils is not there which makes me think that it

RMySQL installed but not availalable
I don't use MySQL but I have seen messages like this before. They often have replies which indicate that you need to follow the instructions more closely. I suggest you search the list for these previous posts as I'm sure there is help there, somewhere! /usr/lib/R/library vs /usr/local/lib/R/site-library
I would appreciate getting a clarification of /usr/lib/R/library vs /usr/local/lib/R/site-library. I am running R 1.8 on Debian Linux. On one occasion doing update.packages() resulted in versions of one or more libraries being placed in one of these directories without removing the old version, and the old version took precedence over the new. I'm sorry I did not save the steps I used. I

Trying to install R on Lucid Lynx
Hi: I installed Lucid Lynx amd64 on my system today, dual booted with Win 7. I've managed to install several packages through the Ubuntu Software Center with success and also installed texlive. Alas, installing my favorite software has not been so joyful. I went through the last few months of posts in this group to find something similar, but to no avail. After a couple of false starts, I

Improving R Editing: New JEdit Edit Mode for R
Hi all, I have created a new edit mode file for the editor JEdit (http://www.jedit.org) based on the file from Zed Shaw. The difference between his and my file is that mine can be used as a spell checker. It does not highlight all functions but provides syntax highlighting for the base package (keyword types 1 and 2) and 26 additional packages (boot, class, cluster, ctest, eda, foreign, grid,

I'm trying to build R 2.10.1 on a Sun Blade 1000 running Solaris 10 (03/05 release). nnet classification accuracy vs. other models
I was wandering if anybody ever tried to compare the classification accuracy of nnet to other (rpart, tree, bagging) models. From what I know, there is no reason to expect a significant difference in classification accuracy between these models, yet in my particular case I get about 10% error rate for tree, rpart and bagging model and 80% error rate for nnet, applied to the same data. Thanks.

Hi, I recently updated to R 3.0.1. I'm running linux ubuntu 12.04. I realized that I have to update all the installed packages so I run > update.packages(checkBuilt=TRUE) as described here http://www.r-bloggers.com/r-3-0-0-is-released-whats-new-and-how-to-upgrade/ . The first thing it did was telling me that it will not update several packages. When it was finished I used the warnings
