by (tapply) and for loop differences
I am getting a difference in results when running some analysis using by and
tapply compare to using a for loop. I've tried searching the web but had no
luck with the keywords I used.
I've attached a simple example below to illustrates my problem. I get a
difference in the mean of yvar, diff and the p-value using tapply & by
compared to a for loop. I cannot see what I am doing wrong.

discrete ECDF
Dear list;
I just created a utility function that replicates what I have done in
the past with Excel or OO.org by putting a formula of the form
=sum($A1:A$1) in an upper-corner of a section and then doing a "fill"
procedure by dragging the lower-rt corner down and to the right. When
divided by the grand sum of the entries this function then calculates
a 2D-discrete-ECDF.

Binning a 2 column matrix by avarages of rows.
Newbie here. Many apologies in advance for using the incorrect lingo.
I'm new to statistics and VERY new to R.
I have a "nx2" matrix , I want to sort the values based on the average of 2
columns and put k lowest (or highest) values in bin1, second k high/low
values in bin2, and so on (bins would be of the same dimensions). I should
also know what the first index (or position) of

degree C symbol in a function
Hello help,
I have changed around some graphing code and made it into a function.
Previously they y label of the axis was inserted as text in its own
layout box.
text(1,1, expression(~degree~C),cex=1)
This worked great and resulted in the symbol for degree.
In the function, I have changed it so:
text(1,1,paste(b_unit),cex=1)
and
b_unit<-expression(~degree~C)
This now inserts ~degree~C

issues with R Library on a Server
Hello,
I am a bit over my head on this issue. My colleagues and I are running
R off of our server. We all have admin rights and prior to yesterday
we all had our own libraries. Our main system administrator advised us
that we should have a shared library. So, I am trying to do this.
I have downloaded the latest version of R and installed it on the

identifying when one element of a row has a positive number
Hello,
I am not sure where to begin with this problem or what to search for
in r-help. I just don't know what to call this.
If I have 5 columns, the first 2 are the x,y, locations and the last
three are variables about those locations.

y<-seq(-290,-200,by=10)

Create! Syntax
Hey All,
Two questions.
Firstly, what is the difference between create and create!
I see that create is document in the api
http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Base.html#M002269
What is the difference between the two of these functions and where is the
create! function defined.
Also,
What are the differences between these two calls?

I need to get the number of years (as a number) between two dates. Here is

I''m sure there is a better way to do this. What is it?

excluding on element from a list
Dear List,
I am making a list of all the files in a folder and I want to exclude
one file called "proj.current". This is the 31st file in a folder.
Currently I use the command:
tdirs <- list.files(pattern="proj.")[-31]
However I would like to exclude it based on its name and not the position.
Any advice would be useful.
Thanks,

R segfaulting with glmnet on some data, not other
Hello R-help list,
I have a piece of code written by a grad student here at BU which will segfault when using one data set, but complete just fine using another. Both sets are just text files full of real numbers.
It seems like a bug within R. It could be a bug within her data, but
again, her data is just a bunch of floats, so her data could be
triggering a bug within R. I have tried this

Unix batch to different nodes
Hello,
I am struggling with computing nodes in Unix.
I have the use of a Unix server that has 30 nodes and I would like to

Here is an R example that results in 72 repeated tasks based on the 2
loops. If I wanted to send these out to the different nodes, each node
has 1 task and the remaining 42 tasks are put in a queue, what would I
do?

discerning plot dots using colors

I am using the command plot to present the relationship
between bird richness (Y axis) and elevation (X axis).
However, I would like to observe
the distributions of bird richness in different administrative areas (A, B,
C, …., G) in this plot.
For example, the dots in area A might fall in the upper right part of the
plot, while those in area B might appear in the middle of
