Question on using elements of a vector
Hi So my particular problem is this: I have a row vector of length 5200 elements - specifically created by x<-rbinom(5200,1,0.5) y<-matrix(x,nrow=1,ncol=5200) y now, each element is either a 0 or a 1 - e.g. it could be (0,1,1,1,1,0,0,0,1,1,1) e.t.c. when the element is a 1, i need to multiply a number (say 1000) by 1.005, and if it is 1 again, multiply it _again_ by 1.005. so

R's integrate function
Hello, I am trying to use R's integrate function to calculate the following integral for z=423: integrate(function(y,z){ sapply(y, function(y,z){ integrate(function(x,z) 1/x*dbeta(0.01,x/(0.005/1.005),(1-x)/(0.005/1.005))*dbeta(y,x/(0.005/1.005),(1-x)/(0.005/1.005))*(1-y)^z,0,1,423)$value }) },0,1,423)$value but I receive an error message saying that the maximum number of subdivisions is

Avoiding a loop
Friends. I cannot simplify this much, and I think the loop is unavoidable. As a recovering C programmer I want to avoid loops and in cases like this I almost allways can by using an apply function. But I suspect in this case there is nothing I can do. It is a finance example where a price series is compared to a moving average. If the price goes above the average, plus a bit, buy the

newbie - difficulty calling user defined function from by()
Hi Folks: I'm new to R and am having trouble calling a user-defined function within the by() function. I have checked on-line help and the R documentation to no avail. I have a data frame with a sample subset represented here: > example.sample ACCT_GROUP_DIM_KEY MV_BASE TOT_DEBT TOT_EQTY 1 555586574850 1082576.3 685.00 2422.50 2 555586574850 1032994.2 2444.00

trellis margin sizes in absolute units
Dear R users, I have a lot of experience with traditional R graphics, but I decided to turn to trellis as it was recommended for spatial graphs by the sp package. In traditional R graphics I always first set the size of the device region absolute units (e.g. mm) and then I firmly fix the inner margins with mai and the outer margins with oma also in absolute units. What is left from the device

Not compressing 24 bit very well
Hello. I just added 24 bit support to CRAM and noticed that 24 bit data isn't compressing much, if at all. I saw a recent thread on this list concerning this same issue. http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/flac-dev/2006-July/001907.html I ran some tests using the command line 'flac' program and also experienced rather poor results. When doing a 'flac -a' many of the files have

Trouble Computing Type III SS in a Cox Regression
I should hope that there is trouble, since "type III" is an undefined concept for a Cox model. Since SAS Inc fostered the cult of type III they have recently added it as an option for phreg, but I am not able to find any hints in the phreg documentation of what exactly they are doing when you invoke it. If you can unearth this information, then I will be happy to tell you whether

Activate DVI-I behind KVM on FX 5200
Hi folks, I don't seem to be able to enable the DVI-I output of an old FX 5200 behind a KVM switch. Autodetection works fine if the FX 5200 DVI output is switched to the monitor, but when it is not, I have not found a way to force-enable it. Here is what I tried: *) used the video=DVI-I-1:1280x1024-24 at 60e kernel parameter (framebuffer still sits at 1024x768) *) used "options

pop 110/995, imap 143/993 ?
just setting a new Dovecot server to migrate from older system, but, I have a general question: 1. I've set the server with self issued cert, and both pop/imap StartTLS/110/143 SSL/993/995 (apologies if I'm using wrong naming terminology) is there a 'preferred way'? should I tell users to use 143 over 993 ? or 993 over 143? or? my current understanding is that some (MS?)

Outlook 2010 not connecting to secure POP3
OK, I did not know that this user has a new computer with Outlook 2010. This SHOULD make it easier but... I have the computer right next to me, they brought it over. It is on the same LAN as this notebook. I can access my server with: openssl s_client -connect z9m9z.htt-consult.com:995 And then log the user in with the appropriate POP3 credentials. In Outlook 2010, in Advanced settings I
