How do you detect if ActiveRecord ''update'' fails?
So I''m updating multiple model objects in one go with something like
this in my controller:
=> Photo.update(params[:photo].keys, params[:photo].values)
When the update fails due to validation errors, how do I detect it?
The Rails API says:
"If the save fails under validations, the unsaved object is still
returned."
So I can''t simply do this:

validates_presence_of not working
Hi,
I''m new to ruby and rails. I just created a simple update page and the
update works fine if all form fields are filled in. However there is one
field that should never be allowed to be blank. So I put this in my
model:
class Topic < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :dr_title
validates_length_of :dr_title, :minimum => 1
So, when I submit the form with a blank

It seems that the validate method in ActiveRecord is not call when doing
an myActiveRecordObject.update, right ?
So, I call the save method instead, and the validation happens...
some has an explanation ?
thanks

update_attrbutes without saving?
Hello all,
Is there a method for updating all the attributes from a hash without
saving to the database? (the counterpart of update_attributes but
without saving).
What I want to do is:
person = Person.find(params[:id])
person.update_without_saving(params[:person]) #update the in-memory
object.
# Process person object
.......
person.save
I know that when you are creating a new object, you can

Boolean values
Hi,
I''m using SQL Server. I have a BIT field. I have a fix and a question.
This is a patch for a bug in the SQL Server adapter that causes any insert or
update to fail:

Validation question
Hi all,
Is there a way to invoke validations at times other than save, create
and update? I know that I can do this by writing my own validation
checks using errors.add_[blah], but I''d like to leverage the existing
validation code.
What I have is two sets of fields in a record, set A and set B. Both
sets must be validated on record create. However, the trouble is that

Modifying data before update or save
Hi,
I''d like to upcase a variable before it is saved, but I''m not sure how
to access the incoming param or where this work should be performed:
In my update method, I have:
@device = Device.find(params[:id])
params[:device[macaddress]].upcase <-- problem code
if @device.update_attributes(params[:device])
....usual stuff here
''macaddress'' is the

Validation dependent on unsaved parent
I''m having trouble with a validation that depends on an attribute of a
belongs_to parent. If the child is added to an unsaved parent
(parent.children << new child), the has_many collection
parent.children includes the unsaved child. However the belongs_to
attribute child.parent appears to be nil until the parent has been
saved. Without access to the parent attributes, the validation

acts_as_taggable v4 - Tag Counting Anyone?
ThereĀ“s already a new version of the acts_as_taggable mixin available
and look what it is capable of now:
# Gets the top 10 tags for all photos
Photo.tags_count :limit => 10 # => { ''beer'' => 68, ''wine'' => 37, ''vodka''
=> ''22'', ... }
# Gets the tags count that are greater than 30

Scriptaculous and Photo Flipper a la TagWorld?
I saw a Flash-based photo-flipper on TagWorld (
http://www.tagworld.com/thepostalservice) and thought it would be nice to do
something similar in Scripaculous. Anyone interested in taking a shot at it?
Since rotation isn''t supported in CSS, what I would imagine would be a
z-ordered "stack" of DIVs, possibly of slightly different sizes or just
x/y-offset a bit from each other.

RMagick Resizing Issue
Hello ~
I have RMagick and file_column working in RoR. In my model I am setting up
some standard sizes for the submitted photos. The photo files are created
and named correctly, but the sizes are wrong. Only the second argument of
my geometry call is used, with the width dimension being resized
proportionately.
file_column :image, :magick => { :versions => { "medium" =>

checkbox helper question
I used scaffolding, then modified. As an after thought I added a

<%= check_box ''is_hot_item'', @photo.is_hot_item %>
<label for="is_hot_item">hot item?</label><br>

I check it and save. But I don''t get 1 saved in my database field.

Form Dates and MultiparameterAssignmentErrors
I''m using the date_select form helper for a date_of_birth field on an
ActiveRecord object. When I try to save a date earlier than 1 Jan 1970,
ActionController punts with
ActiveRecord::MultiparameterAssignmentErrors. The message it gives is
"1 error(s) on assignment of multiparameter attributes". I was able to
catch the exception and look at it, and it is certainly complaining

datetime_select and discard
ok so datetime_select if you use the discard options
say { :discard_month => true }
when you just do update_attributes on said object
year would be correct
month would be the hour
date would be the minute
so if you select
year: 2005
hour: 12
minute: 13
the time object would go into the db as:
''2005-12-13 00:00:00''
so my question is how do i get the time object properly

been spending a lot of time in getting file uploads to work.
inside a project I''m working on, I''ve got two different models using
it... with one of them it''s working just fine. with another,
everything works, with the exception of the url_for_file_column

acts_as_taggable confused
Ahoy,
So i''ve installed the acts_as_taggable module and everything is fine,
but i''m a bit confused about this bit of code described in the API
"photo = Photo.new
# splits and adds to the tags collection
photo.tag "wine beer alcohol"
# don''t need to split since it''s an array, but replaces the tags
collection
# trailing and leading
