A strange behaviour in the graphical function "curve"
I thought the curve function was a very flexible way to draw functions. So I could plot funtions like the following: # I created a function to produce functions, for instance: fp <- function(m,b) function(x) sin(x) + m*x + b # So I can produce a function like this ff <- fp(-0.08, 0.2) ff(1.5) # Is the same as executing sin(1.5) - 0.08*1.5 + 0.2 # Let's plot this

Closing binary file connections
Hi all, I'm writing a function that read data from a binary file. I want to close all opened connections, but it failed: > showConnections() description class mode text isopen can read can write 3 "daten/t5_all.mea" "file" "rb" "binary" "opened" "yes" "no" 4 "daten/t5_all.mea"

An optim() mystery.
I have a Master's student working on a project which involves estimating parameters of a certain model via maximum likelihood, with the maximization being done via optim(). A phenomenon has occurred which I am at a loss to explain. If we use certain pairs of starting values for optim(), it simply returns those values as the ``optimal'' values, although they are definitely not

Puppet bootstrap: via cdist
Good morning puppets, as stated for reallife, "one always meets more than one time", this is true for puppet and me: Although I''m migrating away from puppet [0] to cdist [1], a customer requests a new puppet installation. This brings me again to the question on how to bootstrap a new puppet infrastructure, which we did with a shell script or a Debian package and then running

Package nleqslv ERROR
Dear all, I am relatively new to R and have had some difficulty in understanding an error i get when running a code to solve a system of non-linear equations, with four equations and two variables. This is my code: ALPHA <- c(-0.0985168033402, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) BETA <- c(-0.0985168033402, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) GAMMA <- c(0.3940672148378, 0.1, 0.15,

Package nleqslv ERROR
Santi, In the second line of your function you have the following: f <- numeric(length(x)) This sets the length of this numeric vector (i.e., "f") to the length of the vector "x". Later, inside the function you assign to values to 4 elements of the vector "f". This assumes that "f" is at least 4 element in length. However, you define

General means of matching a color specification to an official R color name
Hello List Dwellers: I?ve looked around quite a bit, but don?t quite see an answer that I understand. I?m looking for a way to take any kind of color specification (rgb, hsv, hcl, hex) and match it to the n-nearest R official color names. Clearly it is easy to interconvert different specification schemes and color spaces, but matching to the name seems a bit trickier. Seems like if one has a

Error Message Help: Differing Number of Rows
Hello all, I'm relatively new to "R" and programming in general - I had previously used MatLab, but decided to make the transition to R, as the computational times are much better! Anyway, I'm trying to use R to run a gamma distribution model to estimate mean transit times of water moving through a hydrological catchment. My input are 3 .txt format files as follow:

set ver = ?
does Wine have anything that does that? I've just tried "wine MS\ .net\ framework\ SDK\ -\ with\ C-sharp\ compiler\ Setup.exe" and it told me that it couldn't install on Win95, Win98 etc, and I'd have to upgrade to NT 4.0 before it would install. Any hints, ideas, previous experience on configuring Wine for suchlike? Thanks Wesley Parish -- Clinersterton beademung,

Using lib Rstreams and gzfile()
Hi all, in the last time I've intensively used Rstreams to read and write from binary files. Now I'm wondering if it is possible to use Rsteams functions with gzipped files. But I haven't found the trick: > p1c.gzip <- gzfile("daten/p1c_all.mea.gz", open="rb") > readBin(p1c.gzip, integer(), n=64,size=2) [1] 84 1 400 1 749 0 0 0

prototype patch submissions
I''ve recently submitted two patches (#5122 and #5266) to the Rails trac. These patches are actually for Prototype. There appears to be very little discussion about Prototype on this list, but I wanted to share what I''ve been doing in the hopes of soliciting some feedback from you folks. If this isn''t the right place to discuss Prototype, mea culpa - where should I

I think many people share your view and are aghast at the reception that some well-intentioned posts receive. There have been past discussions on this and many people feel the way you and I do. Just to head off another round, let me acknowledge that there appears to be multiple viewpoints and although hard to believe by myself, there actually is a contingent that views what I see as
